The programme is arranged according to school subject, but it can be approached in other ways too. film under the History banner, for example, could as easily work with TY Film Studies. Our aim is to provide a wide range of titles and genres that will give you different possibilities, whether you re tackling a theme such as the hero in English, or you re looking to promote modern foreign language learning. Highlights of this programme include Icons and Innovators, portraits of four very different people who have brought individuality, focus and sheer talent to their chosen field. lso in the mix are a couple of exclusive film previews: the highly anticipated Bohemian Rhapsody with a guest appearance by the Queen Extravaganza tribute band, and the tough, defiant The Hate U Give, an adaptation of the bestselling Y novel. mong our initiatives are collaborations with Science Gallery, Junk Kouture, National Museum and National Gallery. ShoutOut will attend to discuss LGBT+ issues for teens following Love, Simon. Our Film Club progresses to the second phase, and our Careers Day, in association with VMDIFF, will build on the success of last year. What Teachers Say Great movies, super introductions on occasions, back-up suggestions, terrific staff. I love bringing students to the German film each year, as I feel it opens their minds to other forms of film-making outside the Hollywood scene. It also makes the German language more real and possibly cooler! Students really enjoyed the day. Positive attitude in class as a result. The visual impact taught the students more about ustralia than two hours of Geography in the classroom. lso, excellent themes and characterisations for the age group. It s very special to bring a class to a film in a foreign language in the cinema. It gives a totally different flavour from watching it over a week in class time and really immerses them for the couple of hours. It also exposes them to alternative films (not the usual Hollywood style) and gives them a taste of what else is out there. 2 IFI Education Schools Programme 2018/2019 www.ifi.ie/learn 3

SENIOR CYCLE SENIOR CYCLE JUNIOR CYCLE English English English English Unforgiven NT Live Hamlet (Encore Screening) Pride Wonder Oct 17, 10.30 Feb 26, 10.15 recommended age 15+ Mar 20, 10.30 Feb 13, 10.30 This award-winning Western has much to offer the comparative study, such as examination of the hero, the world of the Western, and themes of revenge, good and evil. Clint Eastwood is retired gunslinger William Munny, coaxed out of his hog-farming retirement in return for a bounty. In this old-style Western, men ruled, and disputes were sorted by the gun; Eastwood directs and stars as the cowboy ready to hang up his holster, like his own great Western career. US 1992 Drama/Western 130mins Director: Clint Eastwood William Shakespeare s Hamlet returns in this National Theatre Live presentation, first staged in 2015. Lyndsey Turner directs with visual flair and gothic sensibility while Benedict Cumberbatch delivers a masterful interpretation of a Hamlet profoundly torn. s a country arms itself for war, a family tears itself apart. Forced to avenge his father s death but paralysed by the task ahead, Hamlet rages against the impossibility of his predicament, threatening both his sanity and the security of the state. This production renders Shakespeare s protagonist identifiable to a new generation. UK 2015 Drama/Theatre 140 mins Director: Lyndsey Turner Filling the feel-good gap of former comparative text Billy Elliot is this heartfelt British film concerning the unlikely pairing of striking Welsh miners and gay rights activists from London in Thatcher-era Britain. On the outside totally different, with both sides marginalised from mainstream society, they find they also have much in common. Hilarious in places and heartfelt throughout, the film offers insights into a Britain rife with prejudice and intolerance, while underlining the importance and impact of standing up for your rights. UK/France 2014 Biography/Comedy/Drama 119 mins Director: Matthew Warchus pproaching a film adaptation of a much-loved book is always a challenge. Will it be different to the source material? This film adaptation of RJ Palacio s bestselling novel offers a good opportunity for writing a review, or comparing the book with the film. Julia Roberts and Owen Wilson play the loving parents of 10-year-old uggie who suffers a rare facial disfigurement and now has to face down the school bullies. Back at school in Stalinstadt, they spontaneously stage a silent protest in class in support of the Hungarians who lost their lives. IFI INITITIVES IFI INITITIVES Junior Cycle Short Course in Film Film Club Pilot Young udience ward Panel (Y) IFI Explorers Our Short Course in Film comprises 100 classroom hours of three different but complementary aspects of film education. Drawing on a range of teaching and learning methodologies, students are prompted to explore different films, acquiring film language skills. They then apply their understanding of film language to create their own short films, working in groups and telling new stories through moving image. Finally they share their film with their peers and explain their filmmaking choices. The Classroom Based ssessment combines elements of each strand. The Short Course in Film is available to download from our website. If you would like more information, contact Richard at rfallon@irishfilm.ie Following the first phase of our Film Club pilot, delivered during the spring term by a small number of schools, we are looking to expand the initiative across the country, at both primary and secondary level. The pilot involves setting up a film club outside class time, to give students a chance to engage with a wide range of film. Where previously we operated a DVD model, we re now looking at trialling an online platform too, where school broadband allows. The pilot requires some commitment from teachers in terms of providing feedback, scheduling screenings and facilitating the club. Training will be provided with ongoing support. Phase 2 will run until May 2019. The Y is the Young udience ward of the European Film cademy. t the Y event in 2019, panels of young people (aged 12-14) from across Europe will meet in their local venues, watch and discuss films, and vote on their favourite. We would like to recruit some new panellists for the Y event in May 2019.
