As new Minstrel co-chair, Mike Agranoff has invited me to participate in the planning of the Birthday Show! We ve made a couple of changes for this year. For you new members, this is an annual celebration of the Minstrel s birthday where member musicians and singers of all abilities are grouped into randomly chosen duos and trios, and each group performs one number in the show. A new feature is that this year, any group can be accompanied by New Jersey s great bluegrass, jazz and classical improviser, Dave Rimelis. Dave, a true professional and all-time nice guy, will play fiddle, mandolin and/or guitar. Check him out at davidrimelis.com. Secondly, all performers and attendees are encouraged to wear festive birthday garb or indeed, full fledged costumes! Come as your favorite folkie or even a character from your favorite song. It s still a great way to challenge your musical skills and to work with new and surprising Project friends. The Minstrel June 2011 Acoustic Concert Series presented by Fri., 6/3: Reeds, Rhythm, & All That Brass and Betsy Rose & the Chicago Fire Launched in 1973, Reeds, Rhythm, and All That Brass is an 18-piece band playing the classic American Songbook repertoire of the Big Band era. Comprised of professional and semi-professional players, they perform original arrangements of the music made popular by Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Glenn Miller, and the like. The band includes Folk Project members Jeff Rantzer and Hen3ry Nerenberg on trombone and Jay Wilensky on vocals. Opening act Betsy Rose a.k.a. Elizabeth Lachowicz is the Folk Project s resident Blues maven. Her clear voice and saucy style are rooted in the sights and sounds of Chicago s toughest neighborhoods and rowdiest music bars. Betsy s brand of the blues is filled with life lessons, raw emotions, heartfelt sorrows and playful innuendos. Her backup band is The Chicago Fire, and it s packed with some of the Project s finest musicians. Fri., 6/10: Open Stage This is an opportunity for all acoustic musicians to perform a 15-minute set on our stage, and for the audience to be treated to a diverse collection of acoustic musicians. Fri., 6/17: Josh Joffen and the Yayas (split bill) Tonight brings us a pair of outstanding singer songwriter acts. A veteran of the Greenwich Village Speakeasy songwriters scene of the 80 s, Josh Joffen offers highly crafted songs well sung and well played with spirit and emotion. His song most familiar to local listeners is The Girl From The Great Divide as recorded by Mike Agranoff. The YaYas were three friends before they were a band. They write and perform ballads in the old sense of the word: stories in song. Through plain-spoken lyrics, the characters that inhabit them share the details of their lives as if speaking directly to the listener. Catherine Miles expressive voice is intimate, honest. Jay Mafale s percussive guitar parts and Paul Silverman s melodic piano lines complement each other, and all three blend in a way that reflects their friendship and years of playing together. Folk Project Board Meeting May Board Meeting: The Summary The April Meeting of the Folk Project was called to order at 8:10 on a balmy May 3rd, at the home of Secretary Chris Riemer. There was no quorum this evening, for the second month in a row. Present were Lois DeRitter, Gloria Friedman, Jim Gartner, Allan Kugel, and Ed Roffman (Trustees), and Mike Agranoff, Pat Brangs, Connie Crawford, Carl Croce, Nancy Kelner, Elizabeth Lachowicz, Sandie Reilly, Chris Riemer, Pam Robinson, Bob Safranek, Robin Schaffer, Rachel Streich, Rick Thomas and Jean Scully (Other Board Members), and Jim King, Jess Lindsay, Matt Reilly and Mark Schaffer (Guests). Absent were Scooter Ferguson, Carolyn Messina, Brad Pryor, Bobbie Rosengarten and Ruth Wolfish. We agreed to support Waynestock 2011 (in the same way we supported Waynestock 2010), with the loan of some Folk Project sound equipment and a donation toward their expenses. The equipment loan is a committee matter and the donation is one we approved last year which the Waynestock folks never claimed. So formal motions were judged unnecessary. President Roffman hopes to see some progress on the expansion of email as a Folk Project communications vehicle. Robin Schaffer, Mark Schaffer, Lori Falco and Mike Agranoff will be working up some recommendations. Two folks have stepped up to take on our 2011 ACMA grant application. They are Patrick McDonnell and Diane Goodheart, and we offer them our thanks in advance.. And among other things, the committees told us that: The Minstrel Birthday Show will go on this year, and Mike will stay with the traditional names-in-a-hat approach for matching performers. Scooter will try to rally the troops, and encourage the participation of our upper tier performing members. Swingin Tern s April 30 dance, sponsored by Ed and Robin Roffman in honor of their wedding anniversary, pulled in 150 people to dance and listen to Elixir. Chair Connie Crawford believes that s an all time record. Horses Sing None of it Chair Sandy Reilly was particularly impressed with a band called the Edna Project, which recorded a show for Horses in the past month. She hopes people will tune in for that one (or watch it on line). Community Services chair Pat Brangs has established a reciprocal relationship with another folk music group on Long Island. She thinks there might be opportunities to connect our performing members to venues on the island, and vice versa. President Roffman called for (and received) an enthusiastic Huzzah for webmaster John Lamb and the rest of the website development team. Rick Thomas hopes all the committee chairs will step up to the responsibility of maintaining their own content. That s how it was designed, and the tools are easy to use. Please send items to Eddie Roffman, eroffman@optonline.net. Mark and Robin Schaffer are happy to be back from their extended trip to Israel. They had a great time, but they acknowledge that since NJ is where their friends and family are, it is where they belong and where they plan to stay. Rick Thomas recently turned 65 and signed up for Medicare. Rick says that he s proud to have reached this milestone in his life. Elizabeth Lachowicz is excited about her upcoming performance as Betsy Rose with the Chicago Fire opening at the Minstrel on June 3, for Reeds Rhythm and All That Brass. Elizabeth also reports that she has been cultivating and enjoying her garden. She says, It s become a rainbow blast of colorful flowers with tulips, daffodils, and hyacinths. Jim Gartner starred and narrated for the Church of the Redeemer s recent cabaret, themed of the Wild West. Jim did several songs that went over really well. Jim also recently attended the Newark Peace Education Summit, exploring programs, policies and methods used by world communities to establish peace. Allan Kugel reports that he had a great time at the NJ Folk Festival in New Brunswick. He enjoyed listening to the FP members Jean Rohe and Ilusia Tsinadze, performing in the new performer section. Cecilia Rowedder had planned to meet Allan there, but she had a bicycle accident on the way, suffering minor bruises (nothing was broken). Brian Chase, son of Connie Crawford, recently turned 21. Connie went to get him a new acoustic guitar for his birthday, but while at the music store, she couldn t stop from purchasing a baby Martin for herself. Now, Connie and Brian s sister Cody, have been enjoying, playing, and cuddling with this cute little baby Martin. We can t wait to hear them perform at upcoming FP evenings of music. Jim King performed the Faure s Requiem to a full house of 900 people, as a member of the Hunterdon Choral Union, accompanied by the Hunterdon Symphony. Jim says, It was a sublime experience. This is one of the greatest pieces of music ever written. Matt Reilly, son of Sandie, recently turned 18. Matt, who drove his mother to the May FP board meeting, will be graduating High School this year and hopes to study Music Production at Full Sail University. Sandie, along with Gloria Friedman, plans to participate in the MS Coast the Coast bike ride. Gloria will be doing 50 miles in one day, while Sandie intends to ride from Monmouth University to Cape May. Gloria, while recently biking in the Pine Barrens, went to Albert Hall for an Old Time concert on Saturday night and says, It was a great show! Carl Croce s daughter and her fiancé moved out of Carl s house, into their own apartment. Carl says he s okay with them moving out, since it s not too far away, but he s sad that they took one of his cats, Simcha to live with them. Carl also reports that he is enjoying the weekly jam sessions that he and Joe Petraitis have been attending at the Ridgefield senior center. Carl says that some of the seniors that they ve been playing with there are great musicians. Joe Petraitis s daughter, Alicia had a baby boy on April 28th. Joe s newest grandson is named Thatcher Nelson. Both mother and son are doing fine! Mike Agranoff recently returned from a 2 week musical performance tour, doing house concerts throughout Canada. Mike performed 14 concerts in 16 days while driving 2,075 miles. His largest audience was 49; the smallest was 1. FP member and performer, Martin Swinger, recently celebrated the release of newest CD titled Moon. Early reviews say it will be a hit. Jeff Saxton s son, Jeremy Saxton-Mariah is graduating from Ridgefield Memorial HS on 6/23/11 and Jeff is so proud of him! On June 15, Michael Mitsch will be recording his first TV appearance on HSNOI with daughter, Elizabeth, and other members of LagansLove 13
