Class Requirements and Grading Grading: 1. Overall Grading (Total 400 pts): Each Major Unit worth 100 pts/25% of final grade Attendance/Participation-25% Performances-25% Musical Exams (rhythm/final) 25% Intro Question Log-25% 2. Attendance/Preparation A. All students will have a personalized folder for organizing class materials. B. All students are required to keep their work stations neat and clean at all times. C. No student is to cooperate or share responses without consent of the teacher. ** Any questions/comments should be prefaced by the raising of a hand. No interjections!! D. All students must always bring an SSR book, pencil and Agenda to class. E. Any lost packets will be replaced at the loss of 5 points from your Final Grade. 3. Participation A. Absolutely NO food/drink allowed in the classroom. B. Leave other class materials under your seats at all times. No other class work is expected to be done during this class, or you may receive supplemental work (if finished early please notify me for other arrangements). C. Leave any additional musical materials on the center seat for the next class. D. Students are encouraged to participate in all activities. Students who are disruptive may lose some, if not all daily participation points depending on the severity. E. It is the students responsibility to complete any missed assignments due to an absence. Please check with Mr. Robinson to understand what needs to be completed. 4. Tests A. There will be several tests/projects of varying point values. B. The breakdown of each unit is as follows: Rhythm: Rhythm Quiz (50%) Melody/Harmony: Worksheets/Activities (Not Graded) Form/Timbre: Final Exam (50%) Miscellaneous: Intro Question Logs (100%), Participation (100%), Performances (100%) 5. Raise Responsibility. ***This course does count in the grade system. Students should not take it lightly, certainly not if they intend to achieve Honor Roll or Distinguished Honor Roll status. Quarter Note Rhythms 5 9 13 17 What does a time signature mean? A time signature informs the performer what type of note receives the beat from the conductor, and how many beats there are in a measure. A time signature should not be confused as a fraction but may be read as one. Ex: 4 = the number of beats per measure (i.e. 4 b.p.m) 4 = the beat value (i.e. quarter note) (read as a fraction {four-quarters} tells me four quarter notes per measure.
Eighth Note Rhythms Write the counting below each measure (as shown below), making sure to write the correct counting. Remember that we count eight notes as a (# &) pattern. Sixteenth Note Rhythms As before, please write the counting below the staff. Remember that a subdivision of a beat into four will be counted as (# e & a). A B C The rhythm examples below combine sixteenth notes and eight notes? How could these possibly be counted? D E DOTTED NOTES You know that in many time signatures a quarter note typically equals one beat. When you add a dot to a note, you add half of its value to the note. What's half of one?. If you add that to the quarter, you get a note that is 1 beats long (That is assuming that the quarter note equals one beat.) A dotted quarter note looks like this: a quarter note. (1 + ) = 1 The dot makes the note half again as long as Here is a dotted half note: It is one half note plus half of a half note (one quarter). A dotted half note is three quarter notes long. (2 + 1 = 3)
