3 HISTORICAL SKETCH During the 19 th century, newspaper and magazine articles, advertisements, and political commentary were often accompanied by lithographs made from artist s illustrations. Around the late 1890s half-tone photographs were used to illustrate events while political cartoons continued to be drawn by artists. Sources: Materials in the collection SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE The collection is made up of illustrations from 19 different news and magazine publications. The images are of Indiana citizens, events, political cartoons, advertisements, people, and places in the state of Indiana for the years 1854 to Some full articles accompany the illustrations. The publications are arranged alphabetically into series by name. Where there is more than one illustration per newspaper they are in chronological order. For each illustration the headline is listed along with a description of the image; and if it is known, the illustrator, issue, date, page, and Indiana county where the event occurred. The majority of pages represented in this collection are from Frank Leslie s Illustrated Newspaper and Harper s Weekly.
