1 Housekeeping We will be making a link to this presentation available so you can go back and look at it at your leisure In the notes field, I have included any sources that I took my information from as well as additional articles that I think might be of interest Start with my story about personal shopper My story about El Deafo Books have a very important job to do. They help children to become lifelong readers. They seek to provide both recreational reading and also be a resource for educational needs. They encourage children to stretch their imagination and to test the boundaries of what is possible. But the most crucial job that books have in helping to prepare our kids for the future is to inspire empathy and social justice. Books can be a safe place to have hard conversations and books have the ability be acts of social justice in and of themselves. 1
2 Books are sometimes windows, offering views of worlds that may be real or imagined, familiar or strange. These windows are also sliding glass doors, and readers have only to walk through in imagination to become part of whatever world has been created or recreated by the author. When lighting conditions are just right, however, a window can also be a mirror. Literature transforms human experience and reflects it back to us, and in that reflection we can see our own lives and experiences as part of the larger human experience. Reading, then, becomes a means of self-affirmation, and readers often seek their mirrors in books. When children cannot find themselves reflected in the books they read, or when the images they see are distorted, negative, or laughable, they learn a powerful lesson about how they are devalued in the society of which they are a part. Our classrooms need to be places where all the children from all the cultures that make up the salad bowl of American society can find their mirrors. Children from dominant social groups have always found their mirrors in books, but they, too, have suffered from the lack of availability of books about others. They need the books as windows onto reality, not just on imaginary worlds. They need books that will help them understand the multicultural nature of the world they live in, and their place as a member of just one group, as well as their connections to all 2
3 other humans. In this country, where racism is still one of the major unresolved social problems, books may be one of the few places where children who are socially isolated and insulated from the larger world may meet people unlike themselves. If they see only reflections of themselves, they will grow up with an exaggerated sense of their own importance and value in the world-a dangerous ethnocentrism. It could, however, help us to understand each other better by helping to change our attitudes towards difference. When there are enough books available that can act as both mirrors and windows for all our children, they will see that we can celebrate both our differences and our similarities, because together they are what make us all human. 2

9 Disabilities -- *We subscribe to a broad definition of disability, which includes but is not limited to physical, sensory, cognitive, intellectual, or developmental disabilities, chronic conditions, and mental illnesses (this may also include addiction). Furthermore, we subscribe to a social model of disability, which presents disability as created by barriers in the social environment, due to lack of equal access, stereotyping, and other forms of marginalization. The Walter recognizes published diverse authors who champion marginalized voices in their stories 8
10 In the heat of things when discussions are taking place, many are boxed into one or two dimensions that stem from a lack of understanding, convenience or, simply, influence. I don t think this is done purposely or maliciously, but it s done, and it makes many marginalized people feel unheard and unseen within their own communities. 9
11 Also co-founded Disability in Kidlit
12 Own Voices is not just about race or culture Disabilities LGBTQ and Mental Health books are hardest to identify because the authors do not always make that public 11

30 Books are a safe place to have a conversation Rene Watson, author of Piecing Me Together, said in an interview -- I write realistic fiction because I want young people and the adults in their lives to have a way to talk about what s happening, but have some space so you can talk about the characters in the book, and not necessarily your own story yet, if you re not ready to have that conversation. 29

39 Kids of color still don t have access to good mirror books. Mirror books make us feel, seen, appreciated, and valued by society, Ehrlich wrote. Without them, students are less likely to engage with books in fact, First Book did a survey of their members and 90 percent of respondents indicated that children in their programs would be more enthusiastic readers if they had access to books with characters, stories, and images that reflect their lives and neighborhoods. 38
