a checklist to help with Jarrett s visit LCD projector and screen or SMART Board Computer speakers or sound system fro plug into standard 3.5 mm headphone jack An easel with blank paper (Unfortunately, lined paper or graph paper will not work.) Black and silver Sharpies for signing books & thick black marker for presentations Hand-held microphone A music stand if you are able to borrow one from the music room Water bottles Please have itinerary approved by Gina at least a few weeks before my visit. Have schedule printed for the day of the visit.

helpful suggestions First and foremost, please don t stress about the technology. I have a good handle on all of that stuff. To alleviate anxiety, I want to share with you what I bring: an ipod and a pencil bag. That s it! I use my ipod to share my presentations on Keynote. I also use the ipod's camera to project live video footage of me drawing if the room is really large. My entire presentation is on a cloud and on a thumb drive should the worst case scenario present itself. In the pencil bag: Two dongles one plugs the ipod into HDMI cables, one into RGB cables. A charger for my tech. Fine point Sharpies (black and silver) for signing books and a large Sharpie for when I draw during the presentation. (I do ask schools to have these on hand, too, just in case mine are dried up.) It s always best if kids read my books ahead of time. The more familiar they are with my work before my visit, the more psyched they will be. It s always a good idea to have a collection of books on hand during my presentation, just for visuals. (But don t worry if all of the books have been checked out! Though, you ll probably want them in so that I can sign them for you.) Want to make posters for your school advertising my visit? Download high-resolution author photos and book cover images at While there, you can also download a full press release. Schools often invite their local newspaper to cover the event and the press release is a great way to stoke their interest! Book signings typically happen in-between presentations. Students are usually not present for this, as most schools want to make sure that the kids who didn t buy books don t feel left out. I m able to sign books quickly and if there are volunteers to help the process along, I ve been able to zip through 500+ books in a day. And I draw a picture in each book! Also, no need to reinvent the wheel, we have an order form that you can modify and send home with the kids here: We do not sell the books ourselves. Information for book ordering is on the following pages of this document. Download activities for your kids at and While videotaping isn t allowed during my presentations, I d be happy to be interviewed by one of your students on video. This is a great way to have a record of the day! Many companies have made posters, aprons and similar products based on my characters. You can find a full listing of items at

How many books will I need to order? To get an idea of how many books you ll need to order, send a book order form home with students and set the due date for student orders at least a few weeks ahead of the scheduled visit. You ll want to give ample time to get the books shipped to your school. A modifiable book order form to send home with students can be can be downloaded at: Once you get a sense of how many books you ll need, you re ready to make a wholesale order! How do I order the books? Order books directly from the publishers. Work with a local bookstore. Depending on what your needs are, you may have to call multiple publishers to obtain books. You will get a discount, which you can choose to pass on to your students or keep the retail prices as is to raise funds for your school. You will be responsible for returning any unsold books. You will only have one contact to deal with. The bookstore will get all of the stock that you request and handle the return of all unsold books. Many stores will be able to give you a discount if you are ordering in bulk. In which case, you can choose to pass on the discount to your students or keep the retail prices as is to raise funds for your school. You will be helping the economy of your community and supporting a local business. Find a bookstore near you:

SAMPLE SCHEDULE 9:30-10:15 Grades K-2 Assembly in Auditorium 10:30-11:15 Grades 3-5 Assembly in Auditorium 11:20-12:20 Lunch, book signing 12:30-1:15 Graphic Novel Workshop for 5th Graders We offer many different programs so that schools can have a choice on the focus of each assembly. We also offer many workshops so that kids can have a chance to work hands-on with me. These are just examples of how you might like to organize your day. SAMPLE SCHEDULE On each school visit day, you can choose three programs. We have attached the descriptions for those programs here for your convenience. Each day, I come prepared for whichever program you may want to offer your students. 9:30-10:15 Grades K-5 Assembly in Auditorium 10:30-11:15 Graphic Novel Workshop for 5th Graders 11:20-12:20 Lunch, book signing Always be sure to send your schedule to Gina at gina@studiojjk.com at least a few weeks ahead of my scheduled visit. 12:30-1:15 Graphic Novel Workshop for 4th Graders

Each assembly will begin with an overview of how Jarrett got published. Through a digital slide show, Jarrett will show artwork that he created as a kid, giving students something to relate to. Each assembly will end with a Q&A session and a drawing lesson. Approximate running time is 45 minutes. ASSEMBLIES There is no audience limit for assemblies. They have been given to groups as large as 1,000 students. Storytime Concert PreK-K For the youngest readers who might not be able to sit through a full assembly, Jarrett can read a selection of books and draw his characters. While Jarrett s assemblies are 45 minutes, this can be split into two twenty-minute sets. Punking Out the Farm Grades K and up A pig with a guitar? A chicken with stage fright? Where did this all come from? Go backstage with an allaccess pass as Jarrett explains in detail how he wrote his popular Punk Farm picture book. Plot, character development and humor will be explored in this informative and fun assembly. Projected images of sketches, notes and early drafts will illustrate the writing process. Humorous asides will teach the students about the power of revision and editing. Writing with Pictures: The Graphic Novel Grades 2 and up Creating comics is a serious business and it s not as easy as you might think. Writing a graphic novel is not unlike writing any other book plot, pacing and character development all need to be considered. In this assembly, Jarrett will dissect how he wrote his popular Lunch Lady graphic novel series. Sketches, notes, manuscripts, editorial letters and artwork will illustrate how he creates a graphic novel. Writing a graphic novel takes patience, hard work, determination, and many, many revisions. Jarrett will also discuss writing the Jedi Academy series and what it s like to work in that galaxy far, far away The Illustrated Novel Grades 3 and up The Platypus Police Squad novels are filled with plot twists, unraveling mysteries, and character development. They are also heavily illustrated to keep the young reader engaged. This assembly will dive into the challenges that come with writing prose with storytelling support from the illustrations. Jarrett will share sketches, early drafts and the sixteen-page editorial letter that he received after submitting his very rough first draft of the manuscript. All-Ages Assembly Feeling stuck with your schedule? Fit all students of all ages into one presentation! Jarrett will touch upon books that are age appropriate for every grade level in attendance. This assembly is especially apt if you would like to host multiple workshops later in the day. The Young Adult Graphic Memoir - Middle School & High School Hey, Kiddo is Jarrett s debut as an author and illustrator for young adults. Jarrett first spoke publicly about his mother s addiction to heroin and his childhood growing up with his grandparents in a widely shared TED Talk. His graphic memoir is about his childhood and teen years, a period of time in which art became a lifeline and a way to process his mother s battles and the absence of his birth father. Learn about how Jarrett created this deeply heartfelt memoir. A dramatic reading from Hey, Kiddo will be paired with the behind-the-scenes look of how the book was made.

The following workshops are meant to be a complement to Jarrett s assemblies. They cannot be offered to students who have not already sat through an assembly. Approximate running time is 45 minutes. WORKSHOPS Due to the intimate nature of these workshops, the audience is limited to roughly 75 students. Graphic Novel Workshop How do you organize visual ideas in a clear manner to tell a story? What s the difference between a word balloon and a thought balloon? What s a gutter and a panel? The graphic novel format will be broken down and students will gain a deeper understanding of storytelling through comics! Jarrett will also give great tips to avoid the pitfalls that young cartoonists often fall into. (Hint: Write the words before you draw the word balloon...) Schools will need to provide an easel with paper, as well as paper and pencils for each student. Writers Workshop Students will write a story as a collective group with the help of Jarrett. Armed with Jarrett s own personal story, students will be confident in their role as an author. Focus will be on plot beginning, middle and end will be charted out from everyone s input. We will discuss what happens to our character and how those events change our protagonist. Schools will need to provide an easel with paper. Illustrators Workshop Jarrett will draw for the students and demonstrate easy to replicate techniques, such as character expression, perspective, shadow and gesture. After each drawing demonstration, students will then draw their own characters and implement the lesson just learned. As they draw, Jarrett will go from student to student offering them encouragement and praise for their work. Schools will need to provide an easel with paper, as well as paper and pencils for each student. Q & A Classroom Visits Jarrett will travel from classroom to classroom, over a 45 minute period, taking questions from the students. Schools can organize this as they see fit, but the most successful classroom visits consist of smaller groups. It gives the students a feeling of having really met Jarrett. Students may also be more prone to ask their question in front of their own class rather than an auditorium full of strangers. This is a very highly educational and loose program. Schools must provide a guide for Jarrett. Lunch with the Lunch Lady Guy Jarrett is more than happy to have lunch with your students. Because of the exhaustive nature of the day, lunch with students would constitute as one of your four allotted programs for Jarrett s visit to your school. Students should arrive armed with questions for Jarrett. This is a great way to give students one-on-one time with the author. Students can also be encouraged to report back to their classes what they learned.

PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT FOR EDUCATORS Jarrett is available for after-school and evening meetings, as well as state and national conferences. Fostering Growth Mindset Jarrett was lucky enough to have several mentors guide him throughout his youth. In this talk, Jarrett will share stories of caretakers, teachers and other caring adults who gave him encouragement throughout his developing years. Even though the deck was stacked against him in his familial situation, he went on to become a successful, published author/illustrator. His dreams were made real thanks to the encouragement he was offered along his journey. Reaching the Reluctant Reader Until recently, Jarrett didn t think that he was much of a reader as a kid. But then he looked at his bookshelf, and while a few of his most beloved childhood books were on the shelf, so were volumes and volumes of comics. In this lecture, Jarrett will discuss his own journey as a reader and offer tips on how educators can reach their most hesitant of readers. Not every book is for every child, but there is certainly a right book for every child. School Lunch Heroes In the world of Jarrett J. Krosoczka, school nutrition professionals are superheroes. In the author/illustrator s award-winning Lunch Lady graphic novel series, three curious students discover the crime-fighting ways of their heroic lunch lady and team up to keep the school safe from cyborg substitutes, conniving photographers, and mutant mathletes. Hear Jarrett share his favorite stories about real-life school lunch heroes and discuss School Lunch Hero Day, a celebration honoring the hard work, dedication, and kindness of school nutrition staff who help shape the lives of millions of students every day.
