1 Build a Better World Summer Reading Challenge Milton Somers is partnering with Charles County Public Libraries (CCPL) for a summer reading challenge. Summer is a great time for some R and R--rest and relaxation while reading and reflecting on good books. Keeping track of what you read and recording what you ve learned will help you become a better reader. This summer you will be working on the challenges offered by CCPL. You can choose to work on these challenges through the computer web site, ccpl.beanstack.org and your local library branch; or if you do not have access to these, you can complete the paper version. If you choose to complete it through the computer/library, you will need to get the printed copy of your completed challenges, reading logs and review(s) from the library at the end of the summer, before you return to school. If you choose to complete the packet, make sure you mark the appropriate items and return the packet to your ELA teacher on Friday, September 8, The CCPL summer reading challenge is all about earning badges, you can earn badges in several categories and for different reasons. You can earn badges for logging minutes read over the summer, for writing reviews, or for completing a challenge. For those of you completing the badges on-line you will be creating an account with your library card and logging these things yourself. Throughout the program you can go into your local CCPL library branch to receive rewards for your hard work. For those of you that need to complete the paper version, please make sure you complete all appropriate parts of the challenge chart. The Milton Somers Middle School Language Arts Department challenges you to complete as many badges/challenges as possible to help Build a Better World. By Friday, September 8, 2017, please have documented the completion of 7 badges/challenges, either on-line or in the packet, at least one of these challenges should be a reading challenge. These reading challenges have been marked in this packet with a *. We will be completing an in-class assignment based on your summer reading challenge on Friday, September 8, Students who choose not to participate in summer reading will be given an alternate, grade-level appropriate text on the first day of school which must be read and completed by September 8 th.

3 Build A Better World Summer Reading Challenge Reading Log: Badges are earned for logging minutes after 20 minutes, 40 minutes, 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 16, 18, 20, 22, and 24 hours. Date Title of book/magazine # of minutes read (Use paper to log additional minutes)

4 Writing Review: Badges can be earned by writing reviews for books that you complete over the summer. You can earn badges after writing 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45, or 50 reviews. Your reviews should be formatted as follows: (if you write multiple reviews use your own paper, just follow the same format) (Fill in stars to match your level of enjoyment 1 star- not so good, 5 stars- great book) Title of the book: Author: Review (3-5 sentences that tell something about the book you liked, why you liked it, what character you most related to / why and who you would recommend it to)

5 Challenges: Badges, that can also be found online, can be earned for completing challenges put forth by CCPL. A list of the badges are below. Once you complete the badge criteria make sure you fill in any information that is needed on the lines provided. 1) *100+ Years or older: read something written more than 100 years ago 2) *Award Winner: Read something that won an award. What award did they win? 3) Bake: Check out a cake pan and test a cake recipe. What cake did you bake? Signature of someone else who tried the cake- 4) *Banned: Read something that was or is banned. 5) *Birth Year: Read something published in the year you were born. Year- 6) *Black Eyed Susan: Read a Black-Eyed Susan Award Winning Book 7) *Book was Better: Read a book made into a movie or TV show Title of movie or TV show: 8) Building Museum: Visit the National Building Museum. What was your favorite part? 9) Cardboard Box: Get creative with a used cardboard box. Attach a picture or make a sketch of what you created.

6 10) Choose your own adventure: Read a choose your own adventure book. 11) Cookbook: Read a cookbook. What recipe did you try or want to try? Why this one? 12) Craft: Read a crafting or other DIY book. What are some ideas that you tried or want to try? Why this one? 13) *Display: Read a book from the library display. What display did you find it on? 14) E-magazine: Borrow an e-magazine. What was the name of the e-magazine? What was your favorite article? 15) Engineer: Build a structure that will stand by itself using only marshmallows and toothpicks. Attach a sketched picture or actual picture of your creation. 16) Explore: Explore your library (list 3 areas that you explored) Area 1: (name & what you found) Area 2: (name & what you found) Area 3: (name & what you found) 17) *Fantasy: Read a fantasy book. 18) *Fiction: Read a fiction book.

Friend you borrowed it from- 21) *Future: Read something set in the future. 22) *Graphic Novel: Read a graphic novel. 23) Going Up: Take a trip to a tall building with a window view from the top, and look out at the view. What building did you go to? What did you see? 24) Greetings: Learn to say hi in another language using Rosetta Stone. Language- How do you say hi in this language? 25) Hoopla: Borrow something from Hoopla. What did you borrow? 26) *Librarian Recommended: Read something that a librarian recommended. 27) Listen/Watch: Listen to or watch something from your library. What was it? (DVD, PlayAway, etc.) Title- 28) *Marathon Book: Read something that s at least 500 pages long.

Write about the man behind our school name: 31) *Mystery: Read a mystery 32) *New: Read a new release. 33) *No Capes Required: Read a graphic novel that doesn t feature a superhero. 34) Origami: Read about origami and try an origami project. (found on the CCPL website) What did you hear about? 37) Poetry: Read a collection of poetry.

Friend who recommended it- 43) Re-read: Re-read a book you ve read before. 44) Revisit: Re-read a book you read as a child. 45) Save: Tell CCPL how much money you saved by using the library instead of buying books.
