1 Scope European Journal of East Asian Studies (EJEA) is a multi-disciplinary journal dedicated to East Asia, one of the most varied, complex, and rapidly changing parts of the world. Edited by European specialists, the journal is open to new ideas and findings from scholars worldwide. We welcome manuscripts in social sciences such as political science, economics, sociology and cultural studies (including but not limited to business studies, development studies, international relations, political economy). Articles can address the wider East Asian region (China, Japan, Korean Peninsula, Japan, Mongolia), including Southeast Asia (ASEAN countries but not Oceania/South Pacific). They may also study inter-regional relations involving the Asian region (such as Asia-Europe relations for instance), or sub-regions (such as Southeast Asia for example) and individual East Asian countries. The journal covers both 20th and 21st centuries with a clear contemporary focus. Ethical and Legal Conditions Please note that submission of an article for publication in any of Brill s journals implies that you have read and agreed to Brill s Ethical and Legal Conditions. The Ethical and Legal Conditions can be found here: brill.com/downloads/conditions.pdf. Online Submission European Journal of East Asian Studies uses online submission only. Authors should submit their manuscript online via the Editorial Manager (EM) online submission system at: editorialmanager.com/ejeas. First-time users of EM need to register first. Go to the website and click on the "Register Now" link in the login menu. Enter the information requested. When you register, select as your preferred method of contact. Upon successful registration, you will receive an message containing your Username and Password. If you should forget your Username and Password, click on the "Send Username/Password" link in the login section, and enter your first name, last name and address exactly as you had entered it when you registered. Your access codes will then be ed to you.

2 Prior to submission, authors are encouraged to read the. When submitting via the website, you will be guided stepwise through the creation and uploading of the various files. A revised document is uploaded the same way as the initial submission. The system automatically generates an electronic (PDF) proof, which is then used for reviewing purposes. All correspondence, including the editor s request for revision and final decision, is sent by e- mail. When submitting online for the first time, the author is requested to fill out a contact form, where the full address, including an address and telephone or fax number (when available) can be entered. Double-blinded Peer Review European Journal of East Asian Studies uses a double-blind peer review system, which means that manuscript author(s) do not know who the reviewers are, and that reviewers do not know the names of the author(s). When you submit your article via Editorial Manager, you will be asked to submit a separate title page which includes the full title of the manuscript plus the names and complete contact details of all authors. This page as well as biographical details will not be accessible to the referees. All other files (manuscript, figures, tables, etc.) should not contain any information concerning author names, institutions, etc. The names of these files and the document properties should also be anonymized. Manuscript Structure Formatting and style requirements are based on The Chicago Manual of Style chicagomanualofstyle.org/home.html. Use Microsoft Word Editor. Double space text and footnotes. Do not use non-conventional word processing forms, such as underline, cross reference command, and so on, but please use common functions such as italics, centering function, etc.

3 Indent every new paragraph once using the TAB key, do not manually add spaces with the spacebar. Indent block quotes as a whole, and leave an empty line before and after the block quote. Title Underneath the title write name, institutional affiliation and city, and address. If relevant, after the title add an asterisk * as first footnote. In the footnote provide 1) details of the original publication in the case of translated pieces, 2) information on the project funding of the research where relevant, 3) the name of the translator. Names should be given in both English and Chinese. Headings The text may be broken by headings to facilitate reading. Please use boldface for first-level headings. All heading numbers should be set flush left. Abstract and Keywords Authors should submit English abstracts (50-70 English words), and keywords (3-5). Numbers and Time Use a dash between beginning and ending page and year numbers. 4 Note: Write the complete number when the last three digits of a four-digit number change. For instance: The format for year date numbers is as follows: the war of ; the years Year dates in a title should not be omitted, for instance: An English Mission to Muscovy, References Please use footnotes, and write out the complete information for all works cited. Footnotes should be numbered consecutively throughout the essay using WORD default Arabic numbers 1, 2, 3, and so on, and be placed after a complete grammatical unit of punctuation (e.g., comma, period, quotation marks, etc.). Complete bibliographic information should only be provided at the first instance. Thereafter omit the publication information (publisher s location and name, year, etc.) and keep the author s name, and the title of the article, and relevant page numbers If referencing multiple articles from the same journal or periodical, provide complete publication information at each first instance. When necessary, crops, horizontal or vertical orientation, enlargement of details, etc. should be indicated. The preferred format for illustrations files is TIFF (or EPS for maps), but high resolution JPG will also be acceptable. Line drawings should have a minimum resolution of 600 dpi [dots per inch], black and white or full color illustrations should have a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. Files should be the size of the original or sized to the approximate size of reproduction. Please note that if you wish to include copyrighted material, you should seek permission (in writing) from the copyright holder. Consent to Publish Proofs Upon acceptance, a PDF of the article proofs will be sent to each author by to check carefully for factual and typographic errors. Authors are responsible for checking these proofs and are strongly urged to make use of the Comment & Markup toolbar to note their corrections directly on the proofs. At this stage in the production process only minor corrections are allowed. Alterations to the original manuscript at this stage will result in considerable delay in publication and, therefore, are not accepted unless charged to the author. E-Offprints A PDF file of the article will be supplied free of charge by the publisher to authors for personal use. Brill is a RoMEO yellow publisher. The Author retains the right to self-archive the submitted (pre-peer-review) version of the article at any time.

7 The submitted version of an article is the author's version that has not been peer-reviewed, nor had any value added to it by Brill (such as formatting or copy editing). The Author retains the right to self-archive the accepted (peer-reviewed) version after an embargo period of 24 months. The accepted version means the version which has been accepted for publication and contains all revisions made after peer reviewing and copy editing, but has not yet been typeset in the publisher s lay-out. The publisher s lay-out must not be used in any repository or on any website. Transfer of Copyright By submitting a manuscript, the author agrees that the copyright for the article is transferred to the publisher if and when the article is accepted for publication. For that purpose, the author needs to sign the Consent to Publish Form, which will be sent with the first proofs of the manuscript. Open Access Should the author wish to publish the article in Open Access he/she can choose the Brill Open option.
