The focus of the design is on functionality and user-friendliness. For instance, web-links that are useful to Search for Books group resources from the union catalogues, Japanese university catalogues, etc. and similarly, links that help our users to Search for Articles collect together citation indexes and databases. We find that by pooling links of different types of resources that serve the same purpose onto the same page, we can facilitate our users in their research. We are grateful to the Keio University Libraries Visiting Librarian, Hijiri Okamoto, for her valuable contribution to Inside this issue: Visiting Librarian from Keio University 2 New E-Resources in EAL 2-5 EAL Display & Exhibition 5 EAL Homepage Update: Virtual Tour Launched 6 Notable Acquisitions 6-7 New Reference and Information Brochures 7 Donation to EAL 7 Library Staff Update 8 Publication & Research 8 Season s Greetings 8 Page 1

You can find the Japan Resources WebPages at: We welcome your questions and comments. Please contact either Lynne Kutsukake, Japan Studies Librarian at or Fabiano Takashi Rocha, Japanese Cataloguer at Visiting Librarian from Keio University We are delighted to welcome Mr. Takashi Shimada, exchange librarian from Keio University Libraries in Japan. Mr. Shimada is particularly interested in learning more about how we manage our collection of electronic resources at the University of Toronto Libraries. During his five-month stay, from September 2005 to January 2006, he is rotating through various departments within the library system: Information Technology Services, Information Commons, Reference, Access and Information, Materials Processing and the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library. Mr. Shimada can be reached at New E-Resources in the East Asian Library Good news for East Asian studies users The Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library has added new electronic databases to its e-resources collection. CHINESE DATABASES Si Bu Cong Kan 四部叢刊 This collection of major Chinese scholarly works was original published by the Shang wu yin shu guan (The Commercial Press) in Shanghai from 1919 to 1936 in 504 titles and 3,134 volumes. The works collected were primarily reprints of the rare Song ( ), Yuan ( ), and Ming ( ) editions, and were classified according to the four recognized divisions of Chinese literature; namely, the Classics ( 經 ), History ( 史 ), Philosophy ( 子 ), and Belles-lettres ( 集 ). This electronic version of Si Bu Cong Kan that our library purchased represents the original collection in searchable full-text format with traditional Chinese characters. You can access this database from the staff workstation in the microform reading room behind the EAL circulation desk. The database will also be installed in the UofT s Winframe portal, and you will be able to access it through our library s e-resources webpage. Ren Min Ri Bao 人民日報 People s Daily electronic version contains full-text articles published from May 15, 1946 to Dec As the Chinese Communist Party s official newspaper, the People s Daily has comprehensive coverage of China s cultural, social, economic, and political affairs of the last 60 years. It represents the viewpoint of the Chinese Communist Party and the Chinese government. In this database, you can find first-hand materials on some important political events, such as the establishment of the People s Republic of China, the anti-rightists Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library Page 2
3 movement in the 1950s, Mao s Cultural Revolution and Deng Xiaoping s reform. Articles can be retrieved by author, title, date, page, section and column. Qianlong Da Zang Jing 乾隆大藏經 (Great Treasury Scriptures) Printing of the Qianlong Da Zang Jing started in the 13th year of the Emperor Yongzheng 雍正 (1735) in Beijing. For example, you can experience history in the Republican Period from the perspectives of the key insiders by watching the interview of General Zhang Xueliang and film footage from China National Archive showing China in the second half of the 20th Century. Many of the images have never been publicly released before. The following presents some highlights of these new media materials. Tie Xi Qu 铁西区 (A l Quest des rails) [DVD documentary film] HA4638.S56 T Produced by Wang Bin in the Tie Xi district of Shenyang, Liaoning Province, the film depicts the changes in the life of the manufacture workers from 1999 to Tie Xi district is one of the oldest and most enormous industrial centers in China. It was built in 1934 during the Japanese occupation to produce weaponry. When the People s Republic of China was established in 1949, it was converted to become a backbone of China s industry. However, the state-owned enterprises in this area have been losing their edge in the market-oriented economic system. The film shows how the workers struggle for survival in this situation. It can be used as a teaching supplement for courses related to contemporary China. Eight model plays 八个样板戏 The eight model plays of China staged during the Cultural Revolution period are important first-hand materials for researching Chinese Cultural Revolution ( ). Directed by Jiang Qing, the wife of Mao Zedong, they were the only plays officially allowed to be performed in China during the time to promote communist ideology. In terms of genre, these plays attempted to combine elements and techniques in traditional Peking opera and western drama. The VCD version of the plays is instrumental for the studies of performance art, history and culture during the Cultural Revolution period. Other new titles added to our media collection include: 1. 考古中国 Kao gu Zhongguo [DVD] DS715.K 目击中国 50 年 : Mu ji Zhongguo 50 nian : [VCD] DS774.M 世纪行過 : 少帅张学良传奇 Shi ji xing guo: Shao shuai Zhang Xueliang chuan qi [VCD] DS Z47 Z Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library Page 6

Donation to EAL ONATION: : T TANIS GILLING S DONATION: THRIVING CHOSEN Mrs. Tanis Gillings has generously donated a rare book entitled, Thriving Chosen: a Survey of Twenty-Five Years Administration to the Cheng Yu Tung East Asian Library last April. Mrs. Gillings inherited the hand-bound book from her grandfather who spent many years travelling in the East from the late 1800's to mid 1900's. This rare book, now valued at approximately a $US 500, was compiled by the Government-General of Chosen and published in October 1935 as a limited edition. It is in English and has maps and photos of the country. We assume that this book was somewhat of a public relations gift to travellers. The library is deeply grateful for Mrs. Gillings generous donation. Volume 5, Issue 2, December 2005 Page 7

It will be published in History and Society in Central and Inner Asia, Toronto Studies in Central and Inner Asia Series, No. 7, This article examines the particular case of political interventions by Mongol empresses and dowagerempresses during the thirteenth and fourteenth centuries. It demonstrates that female power was legitimate and recognized in the Mongol political system, and that women often competed with men successfully in the highest echelons of the state. It might seem that they struggled only to advance their sons, but in fact many of them enjoyed their own power and struggled successfully to maintain it. George is currently working on another research project on the Korean tribute women in the Mongol Yuan court. The research focuses on one powerful Korean woman, Lady Qi, who eventually became the empress of the last Yuan emperor and has been blamed for her role in the demise of the Mongol Empire. George attempts to argue that, contrary to the general criticism from Confucian historians on the Empress political involvement, Lady Qi possessed a genuine loyalty to the preservation of the Mongol Empire.
