It is also essential to do some work during those two months so that you are ready to hit the ground running in August. Here is the summer work by grade and subject. From the library website select Reading and Research, and click on the Catalog. 3. Login with your username (this is your prefix, like 23smithm ) and password (this is your official first name, like Mary ) 4. Click on Destiny Discover in the menu on the side. 5. This opens up a new page. Scroll down to see the ebooks selection. 6. Choose a book! You can read online, or click Checkout to have it downloaded to your device for 2 weeks. You can also read nonfiction. Go to Newsela for current events And World Book Encyclopedia to find out more about anything! School Library Summer Schedule Students who have enrolled at AC for the 2018/2019 school year may borrow up to 10 books over the summer. The library will remain open during normal school hours until June 29, close for the month of July and re-open August 1. Grade 9 Math I am excited to be working with you in the school year. In order for you to be the most successful in this course, I am asking that you do the following work. There will be a review the first week back to school on the material assigned. 2 Complete the th Grade Summer Work packet (which is a review of 8th grade material) and show your work. It is really important to work on this over the summer as we will be using these concepts in 9th grade. English Incoming Grade 9 English: 3 books in total. The Alchemist is required. The other two you may choose, one of which can be the challenge book below. Required: The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho What is your dream in life? Are our life dreams there to inspire us or to be achieved? In The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho, he explores why some people pursue their dreams and others do not. Santiago is on a quest from Spain to the Egyptian desert to find a treasure in the pyramids. He encounters certain individuals along his journey to help guide him on his expedition. Does he find the treasure? What is his search about, and what does it have to do with your life journey? Challenge Book (not required, but encouraged): I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings by Maya Angelou According to Goodreads: Sent by their mother to live with their devout, self-sufficient grandmother in a small Southern town, Maya and her brother, Bailey, endure the ache of abandonment and the prejudice of the local powhitetrash. A paragraph summarizing what the article was talking about d. A paragraph on your opinion of the article An example of an article reflection is also in this folder. 5 English Language and Literature Please read one of the two books: SL: The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald tells the story of the 1920s, mysterious Jay Gatsby who rises to fame and fortune from nowhere, and the object of his affection - Daisy Buchanan. The book focuses on the clash between the newly rich and the established rich, as well as the decadence and debauchery of the roaring 1920s. HL: The Things They Carried by Tim O Brien is a haunting and beautiful account of a Harvard fellow s experience in Vietnam, which defies the redundant war narratives we always hear. As a piece of creative nonfiction, it will challenge you to consider the literal and figurative things you carry in your lives, and question the truths that are belabored by the system. English Literature All students will read the 1831 edition of Frankenstein, which is one of the texts for Part IV of the syllabus. The text is also available at Please note that the letters ARE part of the novel. Below is some background on the novel and its author, Mary Shelley. Mary Godwin (Mary Shelley s maiden name) was born in London in 1797, the daughter of William Godwin, a radical philosopher, and Mary Wollstonecraft, the author of A Vindication of the Rights of Women. Mary Wollstonecraft died a short time after her daughter s birth. Mary Godwin was raised in an intellectually stimulating, albeit somewhat emotionally barren, environment. At 17, Mary Godwin met and fell in love with Percy Shelley and eloped with him to France. At the time, Shelley was a virtually unknown poet married to Harriet Westbrook. During a summer stay on the shores of Lake Geneva in 1816, Lord Byron, also staying in the area, suggested that he, Mary Godwin, and Percy Shelley engage in a ghost story competition. Frankenstein was Mary Godwin s contribution to the competition. Frankenstein was first published anonymously in A two-volume edition was published in 1823, bearing Mary Shelley s name. Mary Shelley made significant revisions in the work for its 1831 edition. If you choose to buy or use a different edition, look for an edition that contains information about both editions. English 11/12 At the start of next year, we will begin with a unit on reading and analyzing poetry. With this in mind, I would like you to read The Business of Fancydancing by Sherman Alexie. This is a collection of both poems and

6 short stories and will serve as a useful jumping-off point for our discussion about how context and understanding of the author helps to provide insight to the poetry. Please read the collection and select three specific pieces (poems or short stories) that you would like to discuss in the fall. The book is available in the AC bookroom - please pick up a copy before leaving for the summer! Spanish Lit Leer El perfume, una obra de Patrick Süskind La historia del personaje principal, Grenouille, "uno de los hombres más geniales y abominables de su época", transcurre en la Francia del siglo XVIII. Desde su nacimiento, Grenouille descubre y percibe el mundo a través del sentido del olfato, que tiene más desarrollado que el resto de las personas. Also, read this Newsweek article from the Columbine High School shooting in HL Additional Reading Please read The Handmaid's Tale which is a dystopian novel by Canadian author Margaret Atwood, originally published in It is set in a near-future New England, in a totalitarian, Christian theonomy that has overthrown the United States government. The novel focuses on the journey of the handmaid Offred. Her name derives from the possessive form "of Fred"; handmaids are forbidden to use their birth names and must echo the male, or master, whom they serve. (Source: Wikipedia) Feel free to either pick up a hard copy of the book this summer if you are in the US (it can be purchased very cheaply on Amazon or at any used bookstore), or if you would prefer to purchase a Kindle version for your device, that will also work!

Con Bernarda viven sus cinco hijas (Angustias, Magdalena, Amelia, Martirio y Adela), su madre y sus dos criadas. Entre estas últimas se encuentra Poncia, una criada que ha vivido muchos años al servicio de la anciana. Esta obra es la primera de las tres que pertenecen a la parte 2 del programa del Bachillerato Internacional. Recomiendo seguir el guión con la obra adjunta al siguiente enlace. 9 Todos los fuegos, el fuego. Uno de los títulos de libros de relatos latinoamericanos más importantes del siglo XX, con uno de sus principales autores: Julio Cortázar. En estos cuentos, Cortázar pone de manifiesto su preocupación personal y peculiar por el hombre, y para ello lo instala en variadas situaciones. Considera al hombre, de modo absoluto y material, prescindiendo de toda trascendencia; no aparece ninguna referencia a un fin superior ni a un sentido más alto que el puramente material. Por favor hacer énfasis en las siguientes historias: La autopista del sur, La salud de los enfermos, Reunión, La Señorita Cora, La isla al mediodía, Instrucciones para John Howell, Todos los fuegos el fuego y El otro cielo.
