2 A book should be a work of art. How much do we adore those 100-year-old tomes, almost too heavy to lift, packed with colour plates of temple wall inscriptions printed from Victorian-era watercolour paintings? Even the most functional of academic books that might never see the light of day outside of a university library should be crafted with love and attention. They should bring a sense of joy and inspiration to all those who hold them. And I love being a part of that process; of helping to create that piece of art. Good typesetting shouldn t be noticed. Good book design and amazing images, of course, should be. But typesetting shouldn t draw attention to itself. If a book is poorly typeset, you will notice it; the last line of a paragraph stuck at the top of a new page, or a paragraph of text much looser or tighter than the others around it, draws and distracts the eye from the actual content. 3 Services Book typesetting The subjects of Egyptology and archaeology have a long history of producing beautiful books. All the way back to the nineteenth century, gorgeous, oversized books with the most wonderfully produced illustrations were gracing libraries and bookshelves. I take great pride in producing beautifully laid out pages. Each page is carefully crafted to look its best, including tinkering with tracking to get those paragraphs just right, and hunting down widows and orphans. I offer three different typesetting packages: Novel-style books Fiction or non-fiction books that are mostly text Very few or no images No sub-headings within chapters No or very few words using specialist fonts No tables of data Basic typeset Academic or other non-fiction books which may include plates, tables, subheadings, footnotes and end-notes, and specialist fonts (such as transliteration or hieroglyphs) Paragraph- and character styles applied Creation of master pages for folios and titles Document sweep for multiple spaces, hyphen and en-dash usage, and widows and orphans Advanced typeset Everything included in the basic typeset, plus: Time spent on the aesthetics of the text itself, such as kerning titles, and adjusting text tracking to avoid ragged right margins or rivers of white space, making your pages cleaner and easier to read Ancient Egyptian texts Having studied the ancient Egyptian language at university (Middle- and Late Egyptian, hieratic and Coptic), I m in the rare position of knowing what I m looking at when typesetting Egyptian texts. I understand the intricacies of the layout of the language, and how to spot the tiny differences between sets of very similar glyphs (some of the bird glyphs spring to mind). You can give me hand-written texts or photographs of stelae or wall-inscriptions or even a list of Gardiner s sign-list references and I ll transcribe it for your publication. I have the LaserHieroglyphics set of fonts; one of the most comprehensive hieroglyphic fonts available. I also have fonts to set transliteration (including demotic transliteration) and Coptic. Proofreading I m afraid I m one of those pedants who winces every time I see a misused apostrophe or capital letter, and I can spot a double-space at twenty paces. I have a qualification in proofreading from Chapterhouse Publishing and, paired with my degree in Egyptology, I m well-equipped to proofread books across the fields of history and archaeology. I can take either a paper copy in the post to mark up, a PDF to print, mark-up and re-scan (though I may need to add a small surcharge for printing, depending on the size of the document) or use the track changes facility in Microsoft Word to make amendments within your file. 3

4 Prices (2018) Image digitisation and editing Having beautiful, high quality images in your book or on your website can make you stand out from today s heavily saturated information highways. I can work with you on whole projects, such as image-heavy books (photography, travel, coffee-table history books etc); creating a bank of images you can use for blog posts and social media, or getting images ready to sell as prints in a gift shop or on your website. I can: Digitise negatives, prints, line drawings and archaeological drawings Edit images to make them pop for publication in print or on web Correct problems such as colour casts and noise Create web-friendly or print-friendly versions of your images Take RAW files from your camera to edit into JPG, TIFF or Photoshop files Focus-stack sets of images In the toolbox I work on Windows 10, using Adobe s InDesign, Photoshop, Lightroom and Illustrator, ably assisted by the full Microsoft Office suite. I have a number of specialist typefaces for setting ancient languages. I have Laser Hieroglyphics, a professional typeface containing all of the glyphs from Gardiner s sign-list (both left- and right-facing), as well as overstrikes and transliteration. I also have fonts for demotic transliteration and Coptic. I have Helicon Focus, a dedicated piece of software for focus stacking, and I use a Fujifilm X-T2 for photographing negatives and line drawings. Typesetting and proofreading Novel-style books: Basic typeset: Advanced typeset Hieroglyph setting* Proofreading 3.00 per page 5.85 per page for pages with just text or a single image 6.85 per page for pages with tables, specialist fonts and/ or multiple images per page for pages with just text or just images per page for pages with tables, specialist fonts and/or text with inline images per hour, billed in 15-minute increments 8.00 per thousand words *this applies to setting hieroglyphic texts independently. If your publication has full pages of hieroglyphic texts, this rate will apply. This doesn t apply to pages of transliteration or Coptic, which are charged at the normal typesetting rates for specialist fonts. Image digitisation and editing per hour flat rate, billed in 15-minute increments Extras Extra project management will be charged at the rate of per hour (the first two hours will be included in the typesetting cost). This includes tasks such as liaising with authors and editors over editing or proofreading queries, liaising with printers for quotes, file uploads etc. 4

6 The Anubieion at Saqqara IV: Pottery of the Late Dynastic Period with Comparative Material from the Sacred Animal Necropolis Author: Peter French and Janine Bourriau Year of publication: 2018 Peter French s The Anubieion at Saqqara IV: Pottery of the Late Dynastic Period with Comparative Material from the Sacred Animal Necropolis is a pottery catalogue detailing the Late Period finds from the temple of Anubis at Saqqara. As well as standard cleaning up and formatting of text, the typesetting of the book, totalling 300 pages, included: setting tables of data on almost every page. The tables ranged in size from a single row of data through to multiple pages a section of plates at the end of the book. The plates had to be set to scale, the majority of which were at a scale of 1:3 spending extra time making sure the specific formatting of the pottery reference numbers had imported properly across the book Typesetting Extensive tables of data Proofreading pottery reference numbers Setting plates of line drawings to scale 6

7 Qasr Ibrim: the Ottoman Period Author: William Y Adams Year of publication: Not yet published (typeset 2017) William Adams Qasr Ibrim: The Ottoman Period is a general excavation memoir detailing the archaeological work carried out at Qasr Ibrim in Sudan. As well as standard cleaning up and formatting of text, the typesetting of the book, totalling 168 pages, included: tables of data set within the text a concordance table at the back extending over three pages line drawings set within the text a section of plates at the end of the book. There are between two and four images on each plate, often of varying proportions. I needed to consider not only the aesthetics, but also how I could use as much of the space as I could whilst ensuring some of the lower-resolution images weren t so large they became too pixelated (As the Publications Manager at the EES is producing the cover and the book s not yet been published, I don t currently have a copy of the cover to include.) 8 Scholarship, Education and Training, Author: multiple Year of publication: Not published (project done in 2016) In 2014 and 2015, The Egypt Exploration Society awarded scholarships to a number of archaeology students in Egypt. The scholarships brought the students over to the UK for three weeks, during which time they carried out research in The EES s offices, met up with UK-based Egyptologists and visited museums and collections around the country. In 2016, The EES decided to publish a booklet about the scholarships to help publicise the exercise in both the UK and Egypt. I took on the management of the project, which included the following: liaising with the students to get essays from them about their time in the UK and the work they ve done following the scholarship editing the essays for clarity and good English (the students all had English as a second language only) obtaining photos from the students of their work in Egypt designing and typesetting the booklet For reasons outside of my control, the decision was made after I d finished the typesetting not to publish the booklet in its current form (I believe The EES doesn t plan, at the moment, to repeat the scholarships). 9 Temple Ritual at Abydos Author: Rosalie David Year of publication: 2016 R osalie David s Temple Ritual at Abydos a study of the ritual wall scenes at the temple of Seti I at Abydos in Egypt was first printed in 1973 (as Religious Ritual at Abydos) and reprinted in 1981 (as A Guide to Religious Ritual at Abydos). The Egypt Exploration Society later raised funds for a revised and extended edition, published in This extended edition contains extensive transliteration not included in the earlier versions (presumably due to the greater difficulty or expense in setting transliteration in those days). As well as standard cleaning up and formatting of text, the typesetting of the book, totalling 392 pages, included: setting of ancient Egyptian transliteration throughout the book as well as some hieroglyphs in the notes section using scanned images of the line drawings from the 1981 edition, cropping them down in Photoshop, and referencing a copy of the book to find the correct place within the text to set them setting both inline and full-page scanned images from Calverley & Broome folios of wall scenes using a set of instructions from the author as to their approximate placement within the book Typesetting Extensive Egyptian transliteration Setting line drawings within the text Setting photographic plates throughout 9

10 Demotic Ostraca and Other Inscriptions from the Sacred Animal Necropolis, North Saqqara Author: J. D. Ray Year of publication: 2013 John Ray s Demotic Ostraca and Other Inscriptions from the Sacred Animal Necropolis, North Saqqara is a catalogue of texts found on ostraca, such as literary texts, scribal exercises, jar labels and religious dedications. As well as standard cleaning up and formatting of text, the typesetting of the book, totalling 392 pages, included: setting line drawings of each inscription within the text, scaled to actual size extensive setting of demotic transliteration, Coptic and Greek a concordance table at the end of the book, covering twelve pages cleaning smudges from the scanned line drawings in Photoshop For most of the books I typeset, I m sent a fully edited, ready-to-go Word file. In this case, I was sent the author s unedited file, along with a printout containing the academic editor s amendments and notes to incorporate. I liaised with both author and editor throughout to check which of the editor s suggestions should be incorporated and to clarify his queries. I couldn t get hold of the font the author had used for the demotic transliteration, so I had to source a new font, re-set all the text and proof it to make sure it matched the original. I also liaised with printers to get quotes, confirm print options and upload the final files. 11 Qasr Ibrim: The Ballaña Phase Author: William Y Adams and Nettie K Adams Year of publication: 2013 William Adams Qasr Ibrim: The Ballaña Phase is a general excavation memoir detailing the work carried out at Qasr Ibrim in Sudan. As well as standard cleaning up and formatting of text, the typesetting of the book, totalling 304 pages, included: tables of data set within the text two appendices of tables extending across seventy pages line drawings set within the text a couple of instances of Greek text a section of plates at the end of the book. There are between two and four images on each plate, often of varying proportions. I needed to consider not only the aesthetics, but also how I could use as much of the space as I could whilst ensuring some of the lower-resolution images weren t so large they became pixelated some basic work in Photoshop, in particular with the images on the front and back covers; the photos were taken in the 1970s and some had very bad colour casts Extensive tables of data Some ancient Greek text Setting line drawings within the text Image editing 11

12 The Anubieion at Saqqara III: Pottery from the Archaic to the Third Intermediate Period Author: Peter French and Janine Bourriau Year of publication: 2013 Peter French s Anubieion at Saqqara III: Pottery from the Archaic to the Third Intermediate Period is a pottery catalogue from the excavations carried out at the temple of Anubis at Saqqara in Egypt during the 1970s. As well as standard cleaning up and formatting of text, the typesetting of the book, totalling 467 pages, included: tables of data set within the text on almost every page a section of plates at the end of the book. The plates had to be set to scale, the majority of which were at a ratio of 1:3 spending extra time making sure the specific formatting of the pottery reference numbers had imported properly across the book Extensive tables of data Setting plates of images to scale Proofreading pottery reference numbers 12

13 Late Roman Glassware and Pottery from Amarna and Related Studies Author: Jane Faiers Year of publication: 2013 Jane Faiers Late Roman Glassware and Pottery from Amarna and Related Studies is predominantly a catalogue of glassware and pottery, with additional analyses chapters. My part in this project was twofold: I proofread the manuscript first liaising directly with the author over any queries and then setting the book. As well as standard cleaning up and formatting of text, the typesetting of the book, totalling 267 pages, included: setting plates of line drawings, at a scale of 1:2 for glassware and 1:3 for pottery setting a number of tables of data, including fourteen full pages of tables. The tables were of varying dimensions: some had to be set sideways on the page to fit them in; others could fit two or three tables to a page Extensive tables of data Setting plates of images to scale Proofreading and liaising with author 13

14 Testimonials I worked with Julia Thorne on several archaeological monographs while I was Director of the Egypt Exploration Society. She always turned our publications around quickly and efficiently, and her work was of the very highest standard. Our books were not always the most straightforward either: we were asking Julia to deal not only with text, but academic notes and references of various kinds, tables, photographs, line drawings and other illustrations, all of which had often been prepared decades prior to publication and arrived in a variety forms including old carrier bags full of scraps of drawing film to 3.25" floppy disks. In one memorable case we were asked to produce a published volume out of a manuscript that had lain dormat for many years and have it ready for sale in a matter of weeks. This involved the digitization of dozens of drawings and photographs, integrating them into the text which was also being revised and edited along the way. Julia also had to liaise with the publisher, author and editors throughout and proved herself to be an able communicator and negotiator as well. Julia handled the whole process calmly and at speed, and the book including printed text and images and a CD of further images was indeed on sale by the deadline. Despite all the complications associated with publishing work of this kind I never found a project that Julia couldn t handle and could not recommend her highly enough to anyone else with an academic book to produce.
