3 5) Berrigan, Ted. FRAGMENT For Jim Brodey. London: Cape Goliard Press, First edition. Illustrated broadside approx x 11.5 inches. Jim Brodey, to whom the 12-line poem is addressed was a poet and like Berrigan associated with the New York School in the late sixties. A wonderful collaboration of one of the foremost pop artists, with a central figure of the so called Second Generation of New York School Poets The type is printed in blue and black and the toothbrushes in black, cream and pink. Robert Duncan's copy of volume II of this important two volume edition edited by Mabel Loomis Todd. Duncan's name, with Dickinson's words "These behaviors of the year hurt almost like music, shifting when they ease us most.

5 November 1942" in (presumably) Duncan's early hand on the ffep. A good or better copy, front hinge cracked, trace foxing to end papers, spine darkened and gilt rubbed, bookseller ticket (Brentanos) on rep. The date of 1942 is interesting, as Duncan was only 23, a year after being discharged from military service for declaring himself homosexual, and five years before his first book publication. In a published letter from 1960 to Denise Levertov he mentions going back to Emily's letters, so they evidently meant something to him as a beginning writer, as well as at a time when he was a major figure in the literary world. Although the book suffers from racism (not surprising from an ex-confederate soldier and lifetime politician/jurist from near Savannah, Georgia), many overextended metaphors, and an obsession with tariffs, it also makes a legitimate if didactic case against an unregulated Wall Street. Tips and spine ends turned and lightly worn, faint front panel stains, overall about very good. "It seems likely that Plutocracy has disappeared from history largely due to cultural and political factors that are neither necessarily surprising nor difficult to understand, which may in part be indicated by the novel s full title: Plutocracy; Or, American White Slavery. The complete disappearance of a major American work of the imagination by a U.S. statesman from not only literature and literary history but also from nearly all historical record likely indicates that there are considerably deeper social and cultural forces and prejudices than, for example, the entrenched racism and sexism operating in the United States. Though racism and sexism are of course powerful forms of chauvinism, institutionalized and otherwise, that have contributed to the burial of highly accomplished African-American literary works - such as Zora Neale Hurston s Their Eyes Were Watching God - and works by women generally - including Kate Chopin s The Awakening - it seems that even more fundamental forces such as economic chauvinism, or some combination of economic and class prejudice, along with American (U.S.) nationalism have acted to essentially blank Plutocracy from history.[2] [Tony Christini - weblog: A Practical Policy] (6890) $ ) Notley, Alice. WHEN I WAS ALIVE. New York: Vehicle Editions, First edition. One of 500 copies printed. Alex Katz designed cover. Inscribed by Notley "To Jayne/with love/alice/nov 9, 1980/ (my junk)". Back cover wear and abrasion, spine toned, else very good in illustrated wrappers. (6858) $ ) Prokosch, Frederic. CHOSEN POEMS. London: Chatto and Windus, First edition. 1 pp. Quarter cloth, gilt stamped over plain boards. Inscribed "Fritz" in Rome in 1952: "For Matt/ With my friendship and esteem". American-born writer better known as a novelist and forger of his own "butterfly books", than as a poet. This was a selection of previous works; but for a wartime book, quite well done. Boards bowed, a bit soiled and worn at tips; about very good, lacking the dust jacket. (6991) $35.00

15 58) Rakosi, Carl. SELECTED POEMS. New York: New Directions, First edition. Scarce hardcover issue of the poet's first collection after the now rare chapbook Two Poems published nearly a decade earlier. In the Poet of the Month series; Lustig cover. Wear at corners, and spine toned, endpapers offset as usual, else easily very good in a spine toned, soiled dust jacket with two small chips and small loss at corners. Overall close to very good. Hard covers in this wonderful series are becoming scarce. (1330) $ ) Ransom, John Crowe. POEMS ABOUT GOD. New York: Henry Holt and Co., First edition. Original brown paper-covered boards, paper labels. Signed in full on ffep: " with all good wishes/ May 2/63". Poet's first book, scarce signed. Light wear to boards, crown a bit frayed, area of small dark spots on front boards, one roughly opened page, else about fine and very clean. (6894) $1, ) Ransom, John Crowe. SELECTED POEMS. New York: Knopf, First edition. 75 pp. Black cloth gilt titling in dj. Inscribed on ffep to an unnamed recipient by the poet "With Best Wishes", and dated July 12, Previous owner's (Richard Crider) inscription on verso, residue of small old bookseller ticket. Endpapers a bit toned, the edges more than usual, else near fine, the gilt quite bright, in a fragile at least very good dust jacket that is price-clipped, with a few shallow chips along the tender edges. The dust jacket is slightly misaligned, the verso a bit tanned, but with no tears or toning, and quite a bit nicer than usual. Of the 42 poems included here, The Library of America chose to include 13 of them in their anthology of 20th C poetry. His meager output belies the quality of the poems, and his importance to mid-century poets like James Wright and Robert Lowell, and of course his fellow Fugitives. (6876) $ ) (Ransom, John Crowe); David D. Long and Michael R. Burr (eds.). JOHN CROWE RANSOM, GENTLEMAN, TEACHER, POET, EDITOR, FOUNDER OF THE KENYON REVIEW A Tribute from the Community of Letters. Gambier, OH: The Kenyon Collegian, First edition. Quarto. White wrappers stamped in gold, staple bound. Photos, including a tippedon one of Ransom. A stellar group of contributors: Lowell, Auden, Burke, with some of the more significant work. Lightly soiled and rubbed; yapped edges lightly creased; covers a bit lose. A handsome piece for a great man of letters. Very good. (6945) $35.00

16 62) Rexroth, Kenneth. THE ART OF WORLDLY WISDOM. Santa Barbara: Bradford Morrow & Allan Covici, First edition, third issue. All three issues of the poet's fourth poetry collection are scarce if not rare. The first was printed by Decker Press of Prairie City in 1949; the publisher disappeared and the book was not distributed. The second published by Golden Goose Press in 1953, used the original sheets with a second preface and an errata sheet add. This copy is the third issue using the original sheets with an added a new afterward by the poet; the entire edition/issue of 50 numbered and 26 lettered copies were signed by Rexroth. An attractive book bound by Earle Gray, in printed dust jacket and slipcase. This is copy number 2, additionally inscribed by the poet to the publisher Allan Covici. The cloth spine only is spotted, else fine in a very lightly spine-toned, wear at crease, still close to fine dust jacket; fine slipcase. A desirable copy of an attractive book. (6904) $ ) Rexroth, Kenneth (ed.). NEW BRITISH POETS. [Norfolk] : New Directions, [1949]. First edition. 31pp. introduction by Rexroth covering the "schools" and "isms" in a wide-ranging selection of mostly (he makes an exception for Scottish) under 40 poets, including Levertov, MacDiarmid, Reed, Raine, Spender, Comfort, Thomas and Todd. Sunned at edges, lightly toned pages, in a lightly spine-toned price-clipped dust jacket with a few chips at the edges. About very good overall. (6995) $ ) Roethke, Theodore. THE FAR FIELD. Garden City: Doubleday, First edition. Two tone cloth in dust jacket. The poet's last collection, published posthumously; winner of The National Book Award. Tips and one edge bumped, top edge lightly foxed, else about fine, tight, in a spine-sunned, worn at edges (no chips or tears) dust jacket. (6961) $ ) Salter, James. CASSADA. Washington DC: Counterpoint, First edition. 208 pp. A substantially reworked version of his second novel THE ARM OF FLESH published originally in This copy inscribed by Salter to novelist Howard Norman. Although signed copies of this author's books are not at the moment uncommon, copies inscribed to other important writer's are. Very light shelfwear, still fine in like dust jacket. (1564) $95.00

17 66) Schwartz, Delmore. THE WORLD IS A WEDDING Stories. New York: New Directions, First edition.196 pp. Tan cloth in printed dust jacket. Very little wear to cloth or jacket. Cloth spine darkened, but jacket bright, rear panel lightly soiled. Name in ink on ffep, bookstore ticket on rear pastedown. Over all near fine. (6970) $ ) Sitwell, Osbert. THREE-QUARTER LENGTH PORTRAIT OF MICHAEL ARLEN. London/New York: Heinemann/Doubleday, n.d.. Large quarto, [18] unnumbered pages in marbled cloth and blue cloth spine with gilt titling; t.e.g; in dust jacket. One of 520 numbered and signed copies, this number 131. Nicely printed and bound by The Windmill Press, Kingswood Surrey; lovely marbled cloth, large woodcut letter A in red beginning the poem. Poem with a preface by Sitwell about Michael J. Arlen best known as a chronicler in his fiction of the "smart set". One inch closed tear to foreedge of one page, offsetting to end papers, front boards a bit sunned, else fine with the very scarce dust jacket of printed blue-green paper which is toned and chipped at the extremities and has lost most of the spine, what little remains of the spine is covered with cello tape. Still an attractive copy of an uncommon book in a very scarce dust jacket. (6976) $ ) Smith, William Jay. POEMS. New York: Banyan, First edition. One of 500 numbered copies. Poet's first book, and a noteable small press. Linen-backed, patterned paper-covered boards. A very good copy with moderate wear to edges and some soiling. (6950) $ ) Smith, William Jay. TYPEWRITER BIRDS. New York: Caliban Press, First edition. [5 pp.] Small chapbook in sewn decorated covers w/ paper label. One of 300 signed and numbered copies. Whimsical poems with even more whimsical typewriter produced drawings. Pretty production, lightly toned, else fine. Scarce. (6949) $35.00 Scarce cloth issue of Gary Snyder s Pulitzer Prize-winning book 70) Snyder, Gary. TURTLE ISLAND. New York: New Directions, First edition. Green cloth, printed in black, in dust jacket. One of only 2000 hardcover copies printed. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize. About fine copy in a very good dust jacket with one short closed tear, light edgewear and toning to the edges. Attractive copy of a scarce book. (6852) $ Fine copy of Frank Stanford s scrace first book 71) Stanford, Frank. THE SINGING KNIVES. Seattle: Mill Mountain Press, First edition. The scarce first book by the founder (with C. D. Wright) of Lost Roads Press. Stanford died in 1978, a suicide. Two of Lucinda Williams' (her father the poet Miller Williams taught at Arkansas, Stanford was a family friend) songs "Sweet Old World" and "Pineola" refer to his death. Not to be confused with the Lost Roads Press reissue (1979) published after his death, which is also uncommon. A very fine copy; exceedingly scarce in this condition. Trade paperback. (6889) $700.00

18 72) Stevens, Wallace. THREE ACADEMIC PIECES. Cummington, MA: The Cummington Press, First edition. 37 pp. One of 92 copies (of a total of 246 copies in three issues) in light blue paper-covered boards printed on Beauvais/Arches paper. Lacking the plain white paper dust jacket. Binding by Arno Werner; initial letters by Wightman Williams. First book publication of these poems. Lovely book from Harry Duncan's great press. Spine and edges faded, previous owner's name on ffep, else about fine. Edelstein A12. (6892) $ ) Tate, Allen. CHRIST AND THE UNICORN An address delivered on June the 23rd, 1954, at the Third International Congress for Peace and Christian Civilization held in Florence Italy under the auspices of the Mayor. West Branch, Iowa: Cummington Press, First edition, one of 125 copies (reportedly only 100 printed) sewn in blue wrappers and paper label. Few spots of foxing as usual with most on front edge of the rfep. Attractive copy of a simple production from one of the finest of small presses. (6968) $ ) Tate, Allen. FRAGMENT OF A MEDITATION. Cummington: Cummington Press, [8 pp.] Small chapbook sewn into gray paper wrappers with a printed red paper label. Christmas greetings from Caroline [Gordon] and Allen Tate, consisting of a poem from his Selected Poems of 1937, beginning "Not yet the thirtieth year...". Two small coffee ring stains, toning and wear to the edges, the string has broken with partial loss. Interior quite attractive. Good only, but of the several books printed for Tate by Harry Duncan and co. this seems among the most scarce. (6975) $ ) Thompson, Hunter. THE PROUD HIGHWAY. New York: Villard, First edition. With pasted on signed bookplate with the authors elaborate initials. These copies were distributed by the publisher in lieu of an author tour, the previous tours (as one would expect) somewhat difficult to manage. Very fine copy in like dust jacket. (6896) $ ) West, Jon and Annie. PRAIRIE. Marvin, SD: The Blue Cloudy Quarterly, First edition. Small poetry chapbook, a publication of the Benedictine Missionaries, Blue Cloud Abbey, who publish works by Native Americans. Staples lightly rusty, otherwise fine in stapled wrappers. (4112) $ ) Wilbur, Richard. THE BEAUTIFUL CHANGES. New York: Reynal & Hitchcock, First edition. Original light green cloth w/ dark green lettering in dust jacket. The poet's first book, only 750 copies issued; reissued at a later date by Harcourt Brace, who bought Reynal in Top edge sunned with a few rust spots, previous owner's name on pastedown, else about fine, in a bright, complete dust jacket, with moderate wear at the edges, a few short tears, with considerable wear at the head and tail and along the back

19 panel of the spine area. Still overall at least very good, in a dust jacket seldom found in collectible condition. (6946) $ ) Williams, C. K. CREATURES. Haverford: Green Shade, First edition. One of 150 numbered copies printed by hand at The Grenfell Press in handmade paste-paper wrappers by Claudia Cohen. Signed at colophon by the poet. First book publication of these poems, later published in his Collected Poems. As new, at publication price. (6891) $ ) Williams, William Carlos. SPRING AND ALL. [np]: Frontier Press, First edition thus. Cheaply made reprint of 1923 Contact Press edition (which has become all but unobtainable). 98 pp. Spine moderately creased and toned, but still tight and very good in printed wrappers as issued. (6854) $ ) Williams, William Carlos. THE TEMPERS. London: Elkin Matthews, First edition. 12mo. 32 pp. Pale yellow paper boards lettered in gold, lacking the glassine dust jacket. The earliest book by the author one is likely to be able to own (the first was self-published, and few have survived; according to the author most were burned). Publication was arranged by Pound, but even so Williams paid Elkin Matthews $50 to have this book published. Spine-toned, edges rubbed, moderate wear, light ageing and foxing, an ink line in the margin, but overall still close to very good, the gilt still bright. An attractive copy of a fragile little book by one of the giants of 20th C literature. (Wallace A2.) (6850) $ (see also item 82) 81) Wilson, Edmund. POETS, FAREWELL! A wonderful production by one of the centuries finest presses with French in red, translations in black, and two illustrations. Tips

20 bumped and worn through, corners rubbed. Trace foxing to edges. About very good, issued without a dust jacket. (6907) $ ) Zukofsky, Louis. A TEST OF POETRY. Brooklyn: The Objectivist Press, First edition. Burgundy cloth, stamped in gilt. 165 pp. Signed by the poet on the ffep. Lacking the dust jacket, otherwise about fine. Early book, uncommon signed.
