The opening of the Royal Opera House Tuesday June 10, Broadside. 11 3/4 x 20" Silk with tassled borders, with handles bearing shields of Royal Opera House. Fine condition. Red, blue and gold circular holder, printed in red. Presentation programme of the gala perfrormance in celebration of the Centenary of the Royal Opera House Covent Garden. Original circular gift box. Includes overture from Oberon (Rafael Kubelik), airs from the Bohemian Girl (Joan Sutherland ), The Trojans (Blanche Thebom), I Puritani (Maria Callas), Peter Grimes, Aida and dancing choreographed by Fredrick Ashton with Margot Fonteyn, Nadia Narina etc. The playbill was given to one of the singers in this gala. $1,250 2 Marie Taglioni. Paris: ca: After a drawing by Zephirin-Felix-Jean Belliard lithograph by Delpech. Lithograph on paper. (14x10). Framed (18 x 22"). Not examined out of frame. The lithograph pictures a serene Taglioni looking front, amost half length to right, wearing off-the-shoulder gown with two tiers of lace at collar, braids hanging over ears. Zéphirin Belliard (France, ?) worked from , mainly in lithography. Taglioni is one of his most elegant images Ref: Sowell. Il Balleto Romantico #69 colored version. Glassine frayed, wrappers chipped a little at spine. A stain of blue ink affects the gutter margin at the bottom, plates are not affected. Very slight foxing to a few plates. $2,500 Page 4

La Naissance de la Paix par Rene Descarte. ballet danse au chateau royal de Stockholm le jour de la naissance de Sa Majeste (1649).But published: Paris: Bibliotheque Francaise pour les amis de l'auteur, J. Dumoulin, (1946). #280 of 300 copies signed by Aragon on the colophon. When Rene Descartes was 54, he went to Stockholm at the invitation of Queen Christina. It is said that because Descartes refused to dance at a court ball, Queen Christina charged him with writing the verses for a court ballet, La Naissance de la Paix. The ballet was composed for performance on 8 December 1649, the 23rd birthday of the Queen. It celebrates the Peace of Westphalia at the end of the Thirty Years war, which was more or less won by Sweden. According to a recent study by Richard Watson, "the evidence of Descartes' authorship is virtually nonexistent... Almost certainly the ballet was written by Helie Poirier, a professional writer of French verse." References: Watson, Richard A,. Descartes s Ballet (2007) $300 Page 5

Complete with 76 tipped-plates, of which almost fifty are full color This is a fine copy and rare in this condition. Published as the Ballets Russes was achieving its full flowering. Includes reproductions of Bakst's early designs for L'Oiseau de feu, Le Dieu Bleu, L'Apres-Midi D'Un Faune, Cleopatre, Scheherazade, La Peri and many others. Ten years later, several other works on Leon Bakst were published, but none matched The Decorative Art of Leon Bakst in beauty or scope. This was the first deluxe publication on Bakst to be published in England. $6,500 6 Benserade, Isaac de. Les OEuvres de Monsieur de Bensserade. Paris: chez Charles de Sercy, (56), 424, (4); (10), 427pp. + an engraved title-page in each volume. Two vols., sm. 8vo, contemporary mottled calf, spines gilt (one upper hinge cracked). First edition. Benserade ( ) had a long career as a court poet. In particular he provided many of the librettos for Lully's celebrated ballets, and these texts occupy the whole of the second volume here. His single most famous poem is his "Sonnet sur Job" (1651), which came into rivalry with Voiture's "Urania," and divided the court wits into two parties, the Jobelins and the Uranists. $2,000 Page 6

The decoration for the ceiling of the Paris Opera by Chagall was commissioned by Andre Malraux, then the Cabinet Minister in charge of Cultural Affairs. This interpretive rendering of lithograph executed by Charles Sorlier, from a detail of the preliminary sketch of the ceiling of the Paris Opera. Soixante-Douze Planches is a beautiful collection of 72 collotype reproductions of Clara's drawings, gouaches, and pen sketches of Isadora. $1, Duvernay, Pauline. Pauline Duvernay. After a portrait by A.E. Chalon, Lithographed by R.J. Lane. London: J. Mitchell, March 16th, (10 1/4 x 14 1/4" to plate mark; 15 1/4 x 20 1/2" full sheet). Original lithograph on paper, with contemporary hand coloring. Backed on stiff linen. Beautifully framed. The print represents Duvernay as Florinda in The Devil on Two Sticks $2,500 Page 8

9 11 Fuller, Loïe ( ). American dancer. Autographed letter, signed Loïe. [Paris, 1908]. Tall 8vo, 5 pages on three sheets, folded. In English. A dense, five-page letter to Mme Jules Clarétie, the wife of the important critic and writer Jules Clarétie, briefing her friend on wealthy guests who are coming to a soirée at the Clarétie home. Fuller writes with obvious affection for her friend, in language evocative of her very creativity, but with no love for the wealthy guests. Written at an important period in Fuller s life when she began work on her autobiography, encouraged by Jules Clarétie. At this time, she was also staging her balletpantomime La Tragédie de Salomé (1907). $2, Gautier, Jean Baptiste. Rupture entre Lord donnant et Miss prend, danseuse du Theatre de Londres [Caricature]. Paris: December, Etching and aquatint, 14 1/2" x 11", nicely hand-colored, on laid paper with heart and leaf watermark. Excellent condition, with colors delicate and bright. Tape to mat verso. Titled at top, with legend at bottom "Milord mis, puisque vous dansez avec un autre, marche nul, rendez mois mes arrlrea!... Miss_ Ah! Milord, que vous nous connaissez mal, nous sommes allichées, une fois la toile levée nous ne rendons plus l'argent." $650 Page 9

Probably a large paper copy, with wide margins measuring 5 3/8 x 8 7/8". First edition. RISM notes two editions. This, the first edition of 156pp. as here; the second, Amsterdam in Paris in 1780, 173pp. Goudar, a staunch supporter of French music, vehemently attacks Italian music in the present work, but presents interesting ideas about the musicality of the Italian language, as well as the French. His wife, Sara Goudar, deserves study as an early English ballet critic. She is still quoted in scholarly journals for her comments which help to distinguish English from Italian forms of opera of the period. Spine rebacked somewhat crudely. Frontis creased. 240pp. including 12 tipped-in color plates and numerous black and white drawings. N/L I, p This book features 17 important Ballets from the early years of Diaghilev, including Scheherazade, Narcisse, Cleopatre, & others. A beautifully designed and illustrated book in the English fine press tradition. The 12 fine color illustrations are based on the sets and costumes from the Ballets but also show the influence of the oriental art motifs introduced into English book illustration by Dulac and Rackham. $300 Page 10

Very good condition, with slight scuffing. Original wrappers bound in. This collection consists of textural reprints of all the Ballets and Masquerades from , beginning with Balet Comique de la Royne and ending with the Balet de Cassandre and Balet de la Fortune. There are few Ballets later than "Those wishing to trace a firm, although by no means unbroken, chronological line of Ballets, Operas, and other Lyrical Works during this period are advised to consult this work" (Leslie). (volume 75, 1935) where he is listed as a member of the Royal Photographic Society of Great Britain and the Photographic Society of London. (8vo). Full sheet folded in four, unbound. In this pamphlet Mlle. Petit explains her innocence on the day she was accused, upon being caught in an opera box with marquis de Bonnac. This satirical defense actually ridicules Marie Antoinette Petit, a minor dancer, who was expelled from the company following Louise Jacquet's accusations of indiscretion. $1, Rutherson, Albert. Anna Pavlova in Le Réveil Flore.. Original drawing with watercolors of costume for Anna Pavlova in Le Réveil Flore. London, 1914 (10" x 14"), signed and dated Albert R. Sept Annotated. On thin paper, laid down, clean break across length of image, mended..the English premiere of the Awakening of Flora (Le Réveil de Flore) was presented on October 12, 1914, with scenery and costumes by Albert Rutherson. Queen Alexandra was in a box in the circle. Pavlova danced for the first time with Alexandre Volinine. The arrangement was by Clustine. The performance was a success and raised funds for the Red Cross World War I relief. This drawing is reproduced in Rutherson s limited edition Sixteen Designs for the Theatre. Oxford, Albert Rutherson was influential in bringing about the modern use of the painted curtain, which soon found its way onto the vaudeville stages, for which he did a number of productions. $2,000 Page 14

15 21 Schmitt, Florent. Kermesse-Valse, op. 80. [Autograph music manuscript, signed]. [Paris, 1927]. Folio (10 3/4 x 14 1/4"). 44pp. orchestral score on Durand paper, with 24 staves per page. The manuscript is written in Schmitt s tiny, precise handwriting, black ink, with some corrections, annotations in pencil, and erasures and with numbering system outlined in red. Bound in contemporary orange wrappers, a bit soiled. Label on upper cover reading, Florent Schmitt. L EVENTAIL DE JEANNE KERMESSE VALSE. Grande Partition d Orchestre. A few minor stains, but in excellent condition. $6, Schnackenberg, Walthur. Ballet und Pantomime.. Munich: George Mueller, One of 850. Folio, loose in original board portfolio. Album with 20 (of 22) vibrant silkscreen (pochoir)color plates. With sexually mischevious costumes Modern dancers of the period, with their interest in explicity cabaret theatre, relied heavily on extravagantly exotic costumes designed mostly by the Munich expressionist artist Walter Schnacknberg ( ).(Toepfer, p.213) $3,500 Page 15

16 23 Shanh, Ben. (Artist ). Martha Graham [poster]. Poster of Martha Graham (1963). Single sheet, photo-lithograph printed in green, grey and black. 21" x 30 3/4", nicely framed. For a 1963 exhibition of photographs of Martha Graham and her company at the USIS Gallery, American Embassy, London. The poster has letterpress at bottom noting that Graham and her company will appear at the Edinburgh Festival August 26-31, This copy inscribed by Graham With best wishes from a dancer to dancers/ Martha Graham (Signature faded but readable). Most copies of this rare poster were printed for the American market without letterpress announcement of the USIS show. $ Shawn, Ted. Ruth St. Denis: Pioneer and Prophet. Being a History of Her Cycle of Oriental Dances. San Francisco: Howell, Copy 194 of 350 numbered copies signed by both Shawn and St. Denis. Two volumes. Folio (13" x 10"). Volume of text and volume of 64 photo plates, each tipped to heavy paper and captioned. Original batik boards and cloth spines. Name and small stamp on flyleaf, very slight wear, else fine. Pioneer and Prophet is the best work ever done on Ruth St. Denis. The lengthy text, which is by her long-time partner Ted Shawn, provides an excellent history of her dance career and the development of various styles. The photographic plates collect every available image of St. Denis in performance and include those by Genthe and Baron de Meyer. Many of these photos have never been reproduced. This work is beautifully printed by John Henry Nash in the style of William Morris' Kelmscott Press. $2,000 Page 16

The ballet is based on the 1877 balletpantomime in 1 act Le Fandango by by Meilhac, Halevy and Merante, with music by Salvayre, performaed Opéra de Paris, 26 November Rare Libretto Dedicated to Mathilde Kschessinki. The foreword to the ballet cites Albert Czerwinski s Geschichte der Tanskunst (Leipzig, 1862) with its discussion of the Fandango and its origin, a discussion that includes a ballet named Der Prozess des Fandango. The author is Lev Gustatovich Silvo (d.1905) Russian dancer, critic & choreographer. He had been a dancer at the Imperial Mariinsky Theatre* According to Leslie p. 486 and Magriel p. 124 Silvo wrote a history of the ballet from , published in St. Petersburg, * Obituary by S. Galster. No. 16 of 120 copies, specially signed by Karsavina, with hand-tinted illustrations, and specially bound in quarter vellum with decorations in gold on the spine (there were also 230 regular copies, unsigned). Small folio. 149pp, with color frontis. 16 plates, some in color, and 15 camera portraits. Light wear to tips of corners, essentially fine. This is the first biography of Tamara Karsavina, the prima ballerina for the original Ballets Russes of Diaghilev. Svetlov's well-written text provides a full portrait of the dancer during the height of her career. Many of the illustrations printed here featuring the dancer in costume for her important roles are difficult to find elsewhere. This biography "offers elegance and simplicity which echo the qualities which are the hallmark of Thamar Karsavina" (Leslie, N/L II, 504). $2, Taglioni, Marie. 19 28 Valery, Paul. Typed manuscripts on Degas s Mimesis. Typed Manuscript (1933) Four page with numerous corrections. [A chapter from Degas Danse Dessin (published Paris: Gallimard 1938 )]. The small but important section from Valery s Degas Danse Dessins describes Degas way of seeing the female form in a way that had interested no painter before him.
