3 1 Le Guide du Carrossier. Le Guide du Carrossier (Paris ca. 1880). Album of 47 carefully hand-colored, lithographs (some heighted with gold or silver) of fancy carriages and sleds and two-seat runabouts. A few signed by Lagard. Oblong quarto. 19th century half letter (spine loosened). Excellent condition internally. These lithographs, based on the actual vehicles, record the fad for excessively decorated luxury carriages driven by the wealthy Parisian, in an era before the automobile. The lithographs are maquettes for illustrations printed in Le Guide du carrossier et les équipages à Paris, Revue de la construction des voitures et des automobiles ( ) $7,500 2 Alain-fournier (Henri Alban Alain-fournier). London: Fine Arts Society, First English edition (a French version was published the same year). Large Folio. Original vellum decorated with gilt and marbled paper sides. Complete with 76 tipped-plates, of which almost fifty are full color This is a fine copy and rare in this condition. Published as the Ballets Russes was achieving its full flowering. Includes reproductions of Bakst's early designs for L'Oiseau de feu, Le Dieu Bleu, L'Apres-Midi D'Un Faune, Cleopatre, Scheherazade, La Peri and many others. Ten years later, several other works on Leon Bakst were published, but none matched The Decorative Art of Leon Bakst in beauty or scope. Arms of Carlos III (or IV) on each cover. Original presentation binding. Palau Don Juan de Espine was extremeley effective in drawing theatre crowds in the last twenty years of the eighteenth century. Earlier in 1765 it was the theatrical centerpiece during the betrothal festivities of the Prince of Austurias (later Charles IV) one of the major celebrations in the city of Madrid during the century. $6,000 Page 6

[Album Amicorum], from her first concert tour of South America and the United States, (aged 14-16), filled with autograph tributes (many of several pages), long poem (some incorporating drawings), and letters including those from important authors and educators of South America. An exceptionally interesting album of tributes for 19th century Spanish harp prodigy who traveled to North and South America when she was 14. She would later become a writer, an "educationalist" as well as a feminist $5,000 Page 7

Original blue-green cloth, stamped in gilt on spine and black on front cover. Slight rubbing, slight fading of spine. In each volume: two bookplates, two signatures in ink front pastedown. Vol II hinges cracked. With half-titles in all volumes and leaf of ads end of Vol I. Protected in half orange morocco slipcase, lettered in gilt. Slightly scuffed and faded. [Gissing's] strongest book, an acknowledged classic. Its main characters have become recognized symbols of the many shades of professional integrity and adaptability in the literary world, shades not substantially affected by the passing of the years" (ODNB). Malpied's Traite describes, for the first time, the five positions for the arms, in conjunction with the five positions of the feet. The work also notes detailed treatment of the arms, hands and fingers. $13, Miro, Joan ( ). Lucifer. Copy #51 of 75, signed by Miro in pencil, on handmade paper (there were also 500 unsigned copies, with letters published as an advertising poster for the performance). Mourlot. (74.93 cm x cm) In the late 1940s, Picasso became interested in ceramics. He thought he could design a ceramic form that could be produced in a small limited edition, just as he would produce a print on paper. In 1953 Picasso met artist Jacqueline Roque at Madoura Pottery in Vallauris where she worked. Together they created his ceramics. In 1961 they married and moved to Mougins, France where Picasso continued creating ceramics until his death in Annually, he created a poster to advertise his show and sale of new ceramics. This run of posters included a small, signed, limited edition on special paper, as here. Nicely framed. $9, Pouchkine (Pushkin), Alexandre ( ). La Dame de pique. Paris: Editions de la Pléiade, J. Original wrappers. Two volumes, quarto. Very fine. One of Twenty-Five Special Copies. An Example of Russian Book Artistry in Paris after the Revolution. Jacques, a Saint Bernard, "One of the most important books in the history of dance literature... it contains the clearest and most detailed descriptions available of the structure and execution of the basic steps used in social and theatrical dance (Hilton, 49). Rameau sets down for the first time, verbally and with illustrations, the five basic positions for the feet, which had been notated but not analyzed in his seminar work Chorégraphie (1700). $8, Schmitt, Florent. Kermesse-Valse, op. 80. [Autograph music manuscript, signed]. [Paris, 1927]. Folio (10 3/4 x 14 1/4"). 44pp. orchestral score on Durand paper, with 24 staves per page. The manuscript is written in Schmitt s tiny, precise handwriting, black ink, with some corrections, annotations in pencil, and erasures and with numbering system outlined in red. Bound in contemporary orange wrappers, a bit soiled. Label on upper cover reading, Florent Schmitt. L EVENTAIL DE JEANNE KERMESSE VALSE. Grande Partition d Orchestre. A few minor stains, but in excellent condition. $6,500 Page 11

12 17 (Segonzac, Andre Dunoyer de); Ronsard, Pierre de. Quelques Sonnets de Ronsard. Paris: Chez l'auteur, With 51 original etchings by Segonzac. Copy #49 with a suite on Japon, numbered and signed by the artist. (Total edition 210: 35 copies with two suites; 40 copies as this with a suite on Japon; 125 regular copies; 15 hors commerce). Laid in is an original pen and ink drawing of a reclining girl in lingerie by Segonzac, inscribed "pour les gourments de Ronsand and signed A. Dunoyer de / Segonzac." Folio (10 1/2 x 13"; 25, 5 x 32 cm.) Bound in blue morocco with covers decorated in a renaissance style frame created entirely out of pointelle, from which sprigs of acanthus leaves sprout. Smooth spine ornamented in gilt and in pointelle. A simple yet exuberant binding. Mauve suede endpapers. $17,500 Page 12

13 18 Sevin, Pierre Paul ( ). Autograph Autobiography. (Paris/Rome/Torunon:1673 & 1710). Manuscript on laid paper, watermarked with bunch of grapes. Pierre Paul Sevin was a painter, decorator, illustrator and scenic designer (b. Tournon 1650, d. Tournon 1710.) He was born into a family of painters and educated in the art of lettering and painting by his father Francois Sevin (1604-ca. 1666). Pierre Paul was established at the Jesuit College at Lyon after his father's death. At Lyon, he commanded recognition for his commissions and became the assistant of Claude Francoise Menestrier, whose scenic conceptions he executed. At the recommendation of Menestrier, and with the assistance of the Royal Painter Charles Le Brun, Sevin was appointed as a pensioner at the French academy of painting at Rome. He traveled widely before he settled in Lyon and then returned to Tournon, the city of his birth. For those who are interested in the development of architectural design and festival decoration, this autobiography will be an important addition to scholarship, as it documents the actual design and planning of important public buildings and festivals during the high baroque period in France and Italy. $30,000 Page 13

Contemporary red, half morocco and marbled boards (scuffed). Endpapers with Jean Villedary I.V. watermark (2). Fourteen double-page, folded plates, each uncut and mounted on a separate stub (plate size: 22 x 18 ). Fine condition, very occasional light foxing. Of the several attempts to commemorate the second Schouwburg, the Smit series of twelve engravings is the most important because of its accuracy. Gascoigne says the Smit engravings are the most famous of all Schouwburg illustrations, the magnificent series of thirteen etchings of the theatre s scene published by J. Smit between 1738 and $6,500 Page 14

[A collection of almost all the plays, over half in first editions; also the major poetry and translations]. 48 separate works bound in 12 vols, quarto. 11 in uniform contemporary vellum. Joost van den Vondel (17 November February 1679) Dutch poet and playwright was considered the most prominent Dutch author of the 17th century. He passed away at the age of 91, writing until his last years. He is the greatest poet the Netherlands have produced, one who is distinguished in every form and who occupies a place among the best poet of all time.
