18 Uncle Henry to Sam Spade! GRAPEWIN, Charley. The Bronze Bull. Boston: The Christopher Publishing House (1930). First edition. Front fly lacking, else near fine, lacking the dustwrapper. Hardboiled, probably self-published novella. Inscribed by the author on the dedication page to film actor Ricardo Cortez: "To you, Don Cortez compliments of Charley Grapewin." Grapewin was a noted film actor who appeared as Dorothy's Uncle Henry in the Wizard of Oz, Grandpa in The Grapes of Wrath, Lester Jeeter in Tobacco Road, Old Father in The Good Earth, Gramp Maple in The Petrified Forest, and many other important credits. The recipient, Ricardo Cortez also appeared in many movies, and seemed to gravitate towards hardboiled mysteries. Among many other roles, he played Sam Spade in the original 1931 film of The Maltese Falcon, with Bebe Daniels. # $350 LANGLEY, Noel. Cage Me a Peacock. New York: William Morrow First American edition. Very slight erasure front fly, fine in near fine dustwrapper that is a little spine-tanned. A nice copy of this ribald novel about the fair Lucrece and the wide sexual path she cuts through the Roman legions. Langley was credited with the adaptation, and partially credited for the screenplay for The Wizard of Oz. # $125 LANGLEY, Noel. The Tale of The Land of Green Ginger. London: Arthur Barker (1937). First edition. Quarto. Illustrated by the author. Neat contemporary gift inscription, else near fine in near fine dustwrapper with a few small chips and tears. The author and illustrator was, among many other things, a very successful screenwriter and one of the principal writers of the screenplay for The Wizard of Oz. He was chosen on the basis of The Tale of The Land of Green Ginger. Includes a late use of the swastika in the illustrations (for obvious reasons the decorative motif, popular for several decades, fell out of favor in the English speaking world when Hitler rose to power). Very scarce, especially in jacket. Curiously, and despite the fact that the book has seldom been out of print since publication, OCLC locates but two copies of the first edition, and none in the U.S. # $4,500

Angels Don't Marry and Other One-Act Plays. New York: Samuel French First edition. Ink ownership name, else near fine in soiled, and spine-tanned, near very good dustwrapper. Campbell and Ryerson were married to each other and were both screenwriters, Ryerson best known for coscripting The Wizard of Oz. # $65 RYERSON, Florence and Colin Cle- ments. Harriet. New York: Scribner's First edition. Fine in attractive, very good dustwrapper with some scuffing to the bottom of the front panel, affecting some lettering. A play in three acts, based on the life of author Harriet Beecher Stowe. The jacket portrays Helen Hayes in the title role. Both of the authors (who were married) were successful screenwriters as well, although Ryerson achieved the most success, and is perhaps best known for one of her final scripts the classic 1939 version of The Wizard of Oz. # $85 $59.50 KOLBENSCHLAG, Madonna. Lost in the Land of Oz: The Search for Identity and Community in American Life. San Francisco: Harper & Row (1988). First edition. Light foxing on page edges, still fine in fine dustwrapper. "Using myth, fairy tale, and story the author explores the way in which culture, gender, relationships, and an outdated view of religion function to distort our understanding of ourselves and the society in which we live." # $10

20 (Business) WEBB, Richard and W.W. Denslow. Me and Lawson: "Humpty" Hotfoots Little Run in with Frenzied Copper, Amalgamated Gas and Scrambled Oil. New York: G.W. Dillingham Company First edition. Illustrated by W.W. Denslow. 12mo. Illustrated green cloth. Partially unopened. Small spot on front board, small tear on the edge of one leaf, near fine or better. Publisher's bookmark laid in advertising, among other things, Denslow's Night Before Christmas. Satire on business. A very attractive copy of a scarce little book. Denslow was a wonderful and wickedly funny illustrator probably best known for illustrating The Wizard of Oz. # $250 (EARLES, Harry). [Photograph]: Greetings from the Earles Midgets. An original 5" x 7" silver gelatin print. Very good with creases at the corners and small smudge near the lower right corner.
