Foredge a little foxed else fine in very good plus dustwrapper with a little rubbing and a couple of very minor nicks and tears. A novel of bloodlust and racial hatred in a Southern community, no biographical information about the author is provided. A curiosity one of the other four novelettes chosen for publication in a contest in which Remembering Laughter, Wallace Stegner's first regularly published book, was the first prize winner. The dustjacket design is similar to Stegner's book. Unaccountably, aside from this copy, we have never seen any of the other prize winners. # $85 $59.50 X (STEGNER, Wallace) CORCORAN, William. This Man, Joe Murray. Boston: Little, Brown First edition. Slightly soiled, else about fine in a price-clipped, very good dustwrapper with a little rubbing, a couple of very minor nicks and tears, and the rear flap re-attached internally. A labor novel about a young man and his lust for life and women, and the consequences as he grows older. A curiosity one of the other four novelettes chosen for publication in a contest in which Remembering Laughter, Wallace Stegner's first regularly published book, was the first prize winner. The jacket format is similar to Stegner's book. # $125

Fine in full leather with gold stamping and raised bands, all edges gilt, silk ribbon place marker, silk endpapers that have faded slightly along the edges, with a special preface by him not included in the trade edition. Signed by the author. # $150 Blurbing In Sicily STEGNER, Wallace. Autograph Postcard Signed to the Publicity Director at New Directions. : Autograph Postcard Signed to David McDowell of New Directions. Postmarked 14 November 1949 from Stanford providing a blurb for the American edition of Elio Vittorini's In Sicily (which was not used on the first American edition) and mentioning Ernest Hemingway, who wrote an introduction for the book. Fine. Good content, in full: "Dear Mr. McDowell Thanks you the Vittorini and Bowles. The latter I haven't yet read, but the Vittorini is like a good brick fireplace. It draws and it sheds warmth and thank God it has a few ashes in it. The Hemingway introduction is a great man talking foolishly out of his prejudices. Wallace Stegner." The Bowles book in question was The Sheltering Sky. McDowell had a long and distinguished career in American publishing, working at New Directions, Random House, and Crown. For a short period in the late 1950s he and Ivan Obolensky published under their own imprint, most famously issuing the Pulitzer Prizewinning posthumous novel by his good friend James Agee, A Death in the Family. # $450
