The Library's holdings include printed materials from the first printed book, the Gutenberg Bible of , up to the most recent issues of newspapers describing the current events of the day--whether of local or world importance--recording the turmoil caused by the reunification of Germany, the emergence of democracy in the former communist countries of Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union, the war in Bosnia, and the latest developments in the economic, political, and social integration of the European Union. [Enlarged Version (172K)] A detail from the Gutenberg Bible (Mainz, ), the first book prin ted with movable type. The Library of Congress copy, acquired in 1930 as part of the Vollbehr Collection of incunabula, is one of three perfect vellum copies of the Gutenberg Bible. 20 #6 Early Korean Woodblock Printing "P'alman taejanggyong" (Tripitaka Koreana). Korea, Asian Division (155) The carving of the woodblocks for the Korean Tripitaka (Buddhist canon) began in the early eleventh century and was completed in The original woodblocks were destroyed during the thirteenth century Mongol invasions. The Tripitaka Koreana that remains today is a later edition completed in 1251 and consists of 81,200 woodblocks. It is considered to be the finest, in terms of accuracy and calligraphic beauty, among the twenty some versions of the Tripitaka. This item is one of the 1251 edition woodblocks and was given to the Library in 1986.
