1 Information for Authors Information JAMIA for Authors The Journal of the American Meical Informatics Association (JAMIA) enorses an recommens the guielines publishe as Uniform Requirements for Manuscripts Submitte to Biomeical Journals: Writing an Eiting for Biomeical Publication by the International Committee of Meical Journal Eitors. Upate November URL: Scope of Articles JAMIA will consier the publication of any original manuscript that eals with the broa fiel of meical informatics. Originality of Manuscripts Manuscripts will be reviewe for possible publication with the unerstaning that they have not been publishe, in whole or in part, simultaneously submitte, or alreay accepte for publication elsewhere. Authors shoul not submit material that substantively uplicates content (paragraphs, figures, an/or tables) previously publishe or in press. For the purpose of this policy, any form of mass istribution, incluing general availability through a Web server, is consiere to be publication. Unless the Eitorial Office is notifie prior to review of any uplicative/overlapping previous publications, subsequent iscovery of such overlap may lea to return of the manuscript without review. This policy oes not preclue consieration of a much more complete report that follows publication of preliminary finings elsewhere, usually in the proceeings of a conference. Authors wishing to publish ually overlapping manuscripts in journals irecte at ifferent professional auiences (one of which is JAMIA) shoul contact both Eitors well in avance of any submissions in orer to obtain clearance for ual submission an to help Eitors coorinate review an possible publication ates. At submission, authors shoul then provie both Eitors with each manuscript an an explanatory cover letter escribing the egree of overlap in etail, as well as explaining the rationale for ual submission. Copies of any possibly uplicative material must be inclue with the manuscript at the time of its initial submission to JAMIA. Authors submitting a manuscript previously reviewe by another journal are encourage to share a copy of the previous critique an an explanation as to how the manuscript was change in response to that critique. Questions about specific special cases may be irecte to the Eitor. To ensure that this policy is ahere to, each author will be require to submit a Documentation of Originality for Submitte JAMIA Manuscript form signe by the corresponing author before a manuscript will be processe. Forms may be obtaine on the JAMIA website, www. jamia.org, or by ing the eitorial office. Authors may fax signe originality forms to the JAMIA eitorial office at (615) The corresponing author will be responsible for obtaining signe originality forms from all other authors of the manuscript if the manuscript is accepte for publication. Authors shoul isclose to the eitors any financial or commercial interest that they have in proucts iscusse in their manuscript at the time that it is submitte. Information about such interests will not be release to reviewers or influence the eitorial ecision, but a mechanism will be foun to isclose the interest to the reaer if the paper is publishe. Major Sections We have foun it helpful to report ifferent types of work in ifferent formats. This approach permits a rigorous review process base upon etaile review criteria. At the same time, it allows publication of many ifferent types of work that co-exist in an interisciplinary fiel since each may have its own criteria. Each reference in this section is an example of one of the types of paper that JAMIA consiers for publication. The references have been publishe in prior issues of JAMIA. Detaile guielines by type of paper can be foun at The Practice of Informatics The Practice of Informatics section is targete towar the nees of people in the biomeical an health professions who use informatics in their work. Papers that further the evelopment of meical informatics as a fiel are given priority. Examples inclue career evelopment, formulation of policy or consensus, or evelopment of novel methos or technologies. Review Papers 1 present an interpret the state-of-the-art. Over time, these works shoul serve as a multi-authore text on the practice of meical informatics. Synthesis of Research Papers 2 review an interpret the work of an investigator or laboratory. They place work that has been reporte over time into a broaer context. Brief Reviews 3 present a short overview or upate on a hot topic. Position Papers 4 recommen a specific course of action. They shoul promote iscussion of policy questions or potential initiatives. White Papers 5,6 present a consensus regaring techniques or approaches that will improve the prouctivity of the fiel. They shoul provie a roa map for learners, practitioners, an researchers alike. Forum Papers 7 point out ifferences in approach or opinion. They shoul make the choices clear in situations where there may be more than one right answer. Viewpoint Papers 8 present an author s perspective about a topic to provoke thought. The opinions must be tenable, but scientific proof of their valiity is not require. Papers on Careers in Meical Informatics 9 provie insight into curriculum requirements, training requirements, an career alternatives. The Practice of Informatics section also inclues papers on the use of information technology in real-worl settings. A Technical Milestone 10 provies a etaile escription of the evelopment of an innovative technology or information resource. It provies an archival founation for reports of the application or evaluation of the technology. A Technology Downloae from

2 Journal of the American Meical Informatics Association Volume 12 Number 1 Jan / Feb Evaluation Paper 11 reviews the basis of a new technology together with qualitative or quantitative assessment of its effectiveness, shortcomings, an cost. Full-length papers on the Application of Information Technology 12 show how to solve practical problems relevant to health care research, health eucation, or health care elivery. Although these papers are not research papers, some aspect of the application must be original an the report must emphasize generalizable concepts gleane from specific experiences. An Implementation Brief 13 is a case report of an innovative implementation strategy or application. Such a report shoul ocument the methos employe an the application s usefulness as measure by the number of users, time save, cost, or other relevant parameters. A short Technical Brief 14 provies a escription of a metho or a helpful hint. These papers shoul give tips an tricks of the trae that others can incorporate into their tool kits. Book Reviews 15 an Software Reviews 16 alert reaers to new releases an comment on their utility. Original Investigations The Original Investigations section presents original hypotheses an finings. Research Papers shoul provie an archive of the evelopment of knowlege in the fiel of meical informatics. A wie range of types of reports is appropriate. The papers may report the formal evaluation of a technique. 17 The work may be a report of an approach together with preliminary finings 18 or a summarization of ecaes of work with evaluation of the most recent step. 19 Qualitative stuies are suitable for full-length research papers if an appropriate methoology such as analysis of a case is utilize. 20 As state earlier, manuscripts will not be publishe if they have been partially or wholly publishe, or are to be publishe, elsewhere. This oes not preclue publication of material that has been publishe in preliminary form in the proceeings of a conference, provie the manuscript inclues significant new material an the prior publication is submitte as ocumentation to JAMIA. The expansion can involve aition of backgroun material 21 or aitional results. 22 Preliminary work may be reporte in a variety of ways. A Moel Formulation 23 paper proposes a moel or technique. A Methos Paper 24 presents significant new methos for research or applications in the fiel. A Case Report 25 explores a metho or problem through an example. Special Sections A Special Section of an issue of the Journal can be evote to a coorinate set of manuscripts that focus attention on an important topic. 26 Depening upon the length of the manuscripts, such sections woul be restricte to five to seven papers to permit inclusion of some of the Journal s normal content. Eitorial Comments Eitorial Comment places a paper in context 27 or presents a balancing view. 28 Eitorials are also use as a vehicle for bringing attention to an issue that is important to the fiel. 29 Letters to the Eitor provie another forum for this type of information. E-Letters E-letters allow reaers viewing a particular article to provie commentary online. After reaing a given article, a reaer can click Sen a response from a link in the content box. This brings up a screen for the viewer s name, affiliation, aress, an comments. A member of the eitorial team reviews submitte e-letters online at a private location an ecies whether to publish them. The publishe letters appear at the en of the articles to which they relate. All e-letters relate to an original article; there are no general comments. (Please note that this feature is not the same as the traitional letters to the eitor, escribe above, that appear in the print journal. E-letters appear online only.) Preparation of Manuscripts All submissions to JAMIA are in electronic format (see etails below). General Layout Set the format of the wor processor as follows: Margins 1 inch all aroun Left justify only Double-space Twelve-point type Times New Roman font is preferre The heaer shoul inclue: Last name of first author Short running title of 40 characters an spaces or less Page # - # of pages Insert a page break between each of the following sections: title page, abstract, text, acknowlegments, references, iniviual tables, an legens. Title Page The Title Page inclues: title of paper; first name, mile initial, last name, an the acaemic egree(s) attaine by each author (o not inclue bachelor egrees or fellowships); name of epartment(s) an institution(s) where the work was one; name an aress to whom reprint requests shoul be aresse; name, aress, an telephone number of one person responsible for all communication concerning the manuscript (inclue fax number an aress when available). Abstract Abstracts for research papers an moel formulation papers are limite to 250 wors an shoul be structure accoring to: Objective, Design, Measurements, Results, an Conclusion. Abstracts for all other types of papers shoul be unstructure an limite to 150 wors. The abstract shoul be factual, not escriptive. Below the abstract, provie an ientify as such three to ten key wors or short phrases that will assist inexers. Terms from the Meical Subject Heaings list of Inex Meicus are preferre. Text The text of observational an experimental articles shoul be ivie into sections with heaings such as Introuction, Backgroun, Methos, Results, Discussion, an Conclusion. Long articles may nee subheaings within some sections to clarify their content. Other types of articles such as case reports, reviews, an eitorials may use other heaings. Detaile guielines by type of paper can be foun at Major sections, an up to two levels of subsections, shoul be numbere for easy reference by reviewers, following the Downloae from

3 Information for Authors outline below. All references in the text to a section shoul be to the section s title because the section numbers will not be inclue in the publishe version. I. SECTION A. First level Subsection 1) Secon level Subsection Acknowlegements As an appenix to the text, one or more statements shoul specify (1) contributions to the work that nee acknowleging but o not justify authorship; (2) acknowlegments of grant or other financial an material support, specifying the nature of the support; (3) acknowlegments of meetings at which the paper has been presente in part; (4) financial or commercial relationships that may pose a conflict of interest. References References shoul be type ouble-space in orer of occurrence in the manuscript. All references must be cite in the text, tables, or figure legens. The style of references is the Vancouver style as use by Inex Meicus. A sample list of references is available at uniform_requirements.html. List all authors when there are six or fewer; otherwise list the first six followe by et al. The following examples show how to reference an article that is publishe online as a PrePrint ahea of print. For the time the article is online as a PrePrint only: J Am Me Inform Assoc. ##.####/jamia.m1051. Publishe March 1, 2001 Where ##.####/jamia.m1051 is the DOI assigne by the eitorial office to the preprint, on publication. Once the article appears in print: J Am Me Inform Assoc. 2001;9(4): Preprint DOI ##.####/jamia.m1051 Tables Tables shoul be ouble-space an inclue a title. Illustrations Photographs, rawings, graphs, an charts may be computer-generate or scanne. Symbols, lettering, an numbering shoul be of such proportional size that when the figure is reuce each item will still be istinctly recognizable. If a figure consists of two or more parts, the iniviual parts shoul have similar imensions. Artwork submitte at a size suitable for publication 640% reprouces best. For goo-quality print prouction, grayscale (halftone) an color images shoul be prouce or scanne at 3001 pi an line rawings at 6001 pi. The journal prints images at 2,400 pi, but this resolution oes not help if the resolution of the original artwork is inaequate. The capture of a irect screen image (often at only 72 pi) is problematic, particularly when gray tones are employe. Authors may be require to have low-resolution images recreate professionally at their expense after final acceptance of a manuscript. Authors may request print of color figures at their expense. Legens for illustrations shoul be ouble-space as a section separate from the illustrations themselves, but with numbers corresponing to the figures. Data Supplements Data supplements allow authors to inclue a variety of content with their manuscripts. A supplement may be a text file, a PDF file, a spreasheet, an HTML ocument or table, a vieo, or an auio file. The supplement may consist of one file or multiple files. From a usability point of view, the files shoul be small enough to be ownloae fairly quickly. They shoul be of common file types that most reaers will be able to open an use, such as.pf,.html,.gif, or.jpg files; QuickTime movies; or.wav soun files. A ata supplement shoul be submitte to the JAMIA FTP site along with the manuscript, so that it can be consiere uring the normal review process. If accepte for publication, the ata supplement will appear online only, not in the print version of the journal. Abbreviations Consult the Council of Biology Eitors Style Manual (fifth eition; Arlington, VA: American Institute of Biological Sciences, 1983). The first time an uncommon abbreviation appears it shoul be precee by the full name for which it stans. Permissions Authors shoul inicate if the work has been submitte to an Institutional Review Boar, an whether approval was obtaine. If text, illustrations, or ata supplements inclue information about iniviual patients, either the patients shoul not be ientifiable, or the material must be accompanie by written permission to use the ientifiable material in print an online publication. Authors must follow local an institutional guielines regaring protecting confientiality of patient ata an human subjects of research incluing HIPAA an IRB regulations. Materials (figures, tables, paragraphs, lengthy quotations) taken from other sources must be accompanie by a written statement from both the author an publisher giving permission to the publishers of JAMIA for reprouction. If clearances are require by the author s institution, statements concerning such clearance shoul be provie in the manuscript. Obtain an submit written permission from authors to cite unpublishe ata or papers still in press. The corresponing author is responsible for obtaining a signe statement from each author inicating that they take responsibility for the content of this manuscript an that the material has not been publishe, simultaneously submitte, or alreay accepte for publication elsewhere. Electronic Submission of Manuscripts Electronic submission is require. AUTHORS SHOULD CONTACT THE EDITORIAL OFFICE (JAMIA@vanerbilt. eu) IF THEIR SUBMISSION HAS NOT BEEN ACKNOWLEDGED WITHIN THREE BUSINESS DAYS OF SUBMISSION. If the manuscript is accepte, two har copies of figures may be requeste to confirm the valiity of the printouts. General Instructions The host name of the ftp site is jamia.mc.vanerbilt.eu. The login name is jamia an the passwor is submit. The eitorial office prefers to receive manuscripts in both Microsoft Downloae from
