Courtney & Smith, (P.57) Malone says the 6th edition was published both in folio and quarto.this is the quarto edition and contains the original Preface, History Of The English Language, & and the Advertisement to the Fourth Edition. This has been rebound in brown cloth. Down the road, I will rebind it in leather, and remove some heavy foxing on the title page. For now, I just want to stare at it and enjoy it. I waited a long time for this one! This is not an abridged edition; everything in the folio edition is in this quarto edition, including all of the quotations. $250 on ebay. Full calf leather, marbled edges and endpapers. Front board detached and bottom half of spine is gone; I will have a pro rebind all three books for me. Check this edition out on and remember to refer to the 12-line errata books, not the 6-line errata books...okay, go find your socks now! :-) This is by far my Best Ebay Find! I got this book and the next two books for $302! All three books have identical bindings and have the armorial bookplate of Fitzherbert Macdonald on the front endpaper. Boswell, James. JOURNAL OF A TOUR TO THE HEBRIDES WITH SAMUEL JOHNSON. London,1785, Printed by Henry Baldwin for Charles Dilly. 1st edition with half-title and errata present. 1st state p.121, 2nd state p.237 and P.299. This is in the original full leather binding with marbled endpapers and marbled edges. There is a 1/2" chip at the top of the spine, and a 1/4" chip in the title label. Pix is of all three books with this one on the right. Front board detached and bottom of spine is gone. There's only one listing of this book on Bookfinder and that is for $600. THE GENTLEMAN'S MAGAZINE, VOL.VIII 1738 London, Johnson was first published in the Gentleman's Magazine in Courtney lists 10 separate articles attributed to Johnson in the 1738 Gentleman's Magazine, the first of which was Ad Urbanum, a copy of latin verses. The pix shows one of two articles on his poem, London which established him on the literary scene. Also included are the Debates in the Senate of Lilliput articles. While Johnson alone wrote the "Debates in the Senate of Magna Lilliputia" from Nov to Feb. 1743, Courtney only credits him with "revising" the 1738 articles, which were originally compiled by William Guthrie. According to Jack Lynch, the

4 Gentleman's Magazine was Johnson's principal source of income for many years. Before you go any further, you need to bookmark the following awesome Johnson site prepared by Jack Lynch: Johnson, Samuel. THE RAMBLER The Ninth Edition. Printed in the Year MDCCLXXVI. Four vols. No other info given on title page; no publisher and no place of publication. Courtney lists this edition but provides no other information. My first Johnson purchase (L20, $35) and a lesson learned: Whenever possible, collate before buying! Table Of Contents of vols 3 and 4 are reversed, and vol 1 has the same Table as vol 2. London (1790) 38 of 72 vols. Beautiful tree calf leather. The 1779 edition was 56 vols. Sixteen more volumes were added for the 1790 edition. The book on the left is in the original publisher's board. These volumes contain the poetry of the likes of Milton.
