The spell of that great sweep of shingle under its dome of East Anglian skies draws one back irresistibly, and there I spent hours on the beach drawing boats and the men. It was there that began my fascination with sea gulls, the aura of something near mythical that they brought to the scene. Back in my London studio, as I worked on the drawings in mixed media there, over the years I developed a concept of an abstract bird. The line of text under each bird grew out of wider, random reflection and was in no way intended as an illustration of the image. 47.(High House Press) Rymes of the Minstrels selected from a manuscript of the fifteenth century. (1935) Handset by Guido Morris and printed in Bembo on a large sheet of fine wove paper folded into four. Slightly soiled at one corner. A very good copy. 150 An attractively printed piece that benefits from its size. Is it a spoof? Aside from the author's name, there are some distinctly convoluted - not to say odd - Terms of Membership, viz. 'Family Subscriptions: To admit Subscriber & his Wife, his children if living at home, Governess or Servants not exceeding two, having care of his children; at all times when the Gardens are open (Including Fetes). The Subscription includes the privilege of introducing two friends on Sundays.' 52.(Latin Press) Blackett (Sir Basil Phillott), K.C.B. All in printable, usable condition, but not so far as I know, ever used by Guido himself. 400 Given by Guido ( he called himself that because Dougie wasn t posh enough ) Morris to Kenneth Price (now eighty), friend and companion from his Bloomsbury days. Kenneth Price retains various belongings of Guido Morris partly from the occasion when he helped him move from the basement in Queen s Square in which he was staying illegally. I understand that he contributed material to the Tate St Ives exhibition on Guido Morris.

Kean.. 2,250 Francis Edwin Murray ( ) was a Uranian poet and publisher of the late 19th and early 20th century. Almost totally forgotten today, his books of verse include Rondeaux of Boyhood (1923), limited to 300 copies, and From a Lover's Garden: More Rondeaux and Other Verses of Boyhood (1924), limited to 225 copies. The former was written under the pseudonym A. Newman. The latter contained an introduction by fellow Uranian John Gambril Nicholson. Murray also wrote a

13 bibliography of Austin Dobson, published in Murray worked as a printer, bookseller and publisher in the Brompton Road, London. He printed the works of other Uranians, including John Leslie Barford. Murray was born in 1854 into a dynasty of booksellers and it would have been no surprise to anyone that he would go on to become a bookseller and publisher himself. In fact, he was extremely good at it and surpassed his grandfather and father in the scale of his business operations. By the time this bookplate was created in 1893, at the age of 39, Murray had shops in Nottingham, Derby and Leicester and his own publishing business. It is worth spending a moment dissecting some of the iconography within this image. Aside from depicting himself in medieval costume, there are roundels which show the arms of the towns in which he had his shops - and much else. Most fundamental, however, to Murray's position in the bookselling world, and indeed central to the design of the bookplate is a copy of a bound volume of The Clique which sits under Murray's hand. The Clique was a trade magazine that Murray founded and which placed him right at the heart of the bookselling establishment in Britain. The Clique continued for decades and was run for some time by Murray's son, it was also, from 1907, the official organ of the Antiquarian Booksellers' Association. 59.
