7 Tips on Avoiding Plagiarism Start your research as soon as possible. Purchase a USB and create folders for semesters and subfolders for individual classes within each semester. Click on the specific class and create subfolders for individual research papers/projects. In gathering information from the online databases for your research paper, be sure to save the full-text articles or e-books as well as the embedded citations in a required style in the specific folder for the research paper. Get to know Chicago/Turabian Style and where you can find reputable citation guides online so that you can properly cite sources in the body of your article, Notes (footnotes or endnotes), and Bibliography. List your cited sources in your footnotes and Bibliography as you write your paper so that you won t miss any source citations. 7

Type the note number at the end of the sentence of your direct quote or paraphrased idea from a cited source. 2. Highlight the number and press Ctrl + Shift + Plus Sign simultaneously to make the number in superscript How to create a footnote in Microsoft Word? 1. Click on Insert and then Header/Footer icon on the top of the screen and select Footer. 2. Choose Align to the left. 3. Number the notes in numerical order throughout your paper. 4. In the footnote, indent the first line and type the note number followed by a period (superscript the footnote number and the period is preferred by the style). Enter the author s first name, middle name, and last name followed by a comma and a space. 14

16 Find and Tweak the Embedded Chicago/Turabian Citation from GoElectronic (Author-Date) In the body of your research paper, place the parenthetical reference (in-text citation) at the end of the sentence where you have a direct or indirect quote from the above source in parentheses.
