Attempting to return to Isandhlwana with his guns to avert defeat he was thwarted by superior orders. John Jervis, 4th Viscount St Vincent, a cavalry officer attached to the 17th Lancers, kept a diary subsequent to the disaster at Isandhlwana and describes not only the critical role of horses but also the many scares and false-alarms suffered in Zululand. Sir Henry Bulwer, lieutenant-governor of Natal, wrote letters to a brother and shows the frustrations of a colonial administrator during a war.
