3 FONDS DESCRIPTIO N Anne Marriott Paper s Records, m. Records of Marriott produced and received during her personal an d literary activities. Marriott worked as a poet, fiction writer, newspaper reporter, and essayist. The papers include a n extensive correspondence series, manuscripts, lecture notes, records of her various political activities, and referenc e material. The papers were accessioned by the Special Collection s and University Archives Division from Anne Marriott in Marriott's permission must be obtained for publication of he r correspondence with Nell Reiss.
4 i v II BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH Joyce Anne Marriott was born in 1913 in Vitoria, Britis h Columbia~ She received her early education in private schools i n Victoria, and began her writing career at an early age ~ Throughout a literary career which spans nearly seven decades, Marriott has written poetry, novels, short fiction, and radi o plays. In 1941 she received the Governor General's Poetry Awar d for "Calling Adventurers!", and in 1943 received the Women' s Canadian Club Literary Award. She has published seven books ; the most recent of these is Letters From Some Islands,, a collectio n of poetry published in During the 1940's, Marriott worked as a script writer fo r the National Film Board in Ottawa. During her residence i n Ottawa, she met Gerald McLellan, whom she married in Th e couple adopted three children after they moved to Britis h Columbia. The McLellans lived in Prince George from 1950 to 1954, in Squamish from 1954 to 1958, and settled in North Vancouver i n McLellan died in Marriott continues to write, publishing under her maide n name, and occasionally under Joyce McLellan. Her work, particularly her poetry, has been widely anthologized.
5 v III SCOPE AND CONTENT : The records include incoming and outgoing correspondence, manuscripts, research notes, lecture notes, records of he r various political activities, financial records, referenc e material, and miscellania. Original order has been preserved wherever Marriott has identified it. Where original order has been lost, as in some of the personal and busines s correspondence, it has been reconstructed by reference to he r various functions as author and active member of the community. Within each series, files have been arranged primarily in revers e chronological order. The correspondence and manuscripts offer insight int o Marriott's literary development. They provide details of he r attempts to publish, her participation in writers' groups, an d her relationships with business and personal acquaintances withi n the literary world. The records are divided into twelve series» A-J. They ar e further divided into sub-series to reflect the inter-relationshi p of the records to one another. These sub-series are identifie d numerically, as for example, A.1. Box and file numbers are note d on the right hand side of the page for each sub-series.

7 1 V Inventory 56rle s A. CORRESPONDENCE SERIES, files Outgoing and incoming correspondence is interfiled, and arrange d in reverse chronological order. Correspondence that has lost it s original order has been reconstructed according to the function s of Marriotts personal and literary activities. Individuals who have established significant correspondence with Marriott have been identified. Occas ional correspondents have been arrange d together in "General Correspondence" sub-series. A.1 Alphabetical Sequence Correspondence, files Two alphabetical sequences, which include mainly business correspondence with over 100 publishers. In addition, a significant portion of it concerns poetry readings and genera l meetings sponsored by the League of Canadian Poets. The file s also include some personal correspondence, greeting cards, an d printed material. The letters are arranged in each alphabetica l sequence by name of organization or author. Occasionally, the relationship of the document to the sequence is unclear.
