Biographical Sketch Robert D. San Souci was born on October 10, 1946, in San Francisco, California. He completed his undergraduate study in 1968 at St. Mary s College and attended California State University, Hayward, for his graduate study from 1968 to San Souci is perhaps best known for his adaptations of folk tales from around the world. His works feature heroes from many different places and ethnicities, with a particular emphasis on strong female protagonists. Throughout his writing career, San Souci has worked with numerous illustrators from across the country and all over the world, some from as far away as Moscow or Mexico City. Several of his books have been illustrated by his brother, a renowned artist and author in his own right, Daniel San Souci. Robert D. San Souci says that he plans... to continue writing as long as I have stories to tell and an audience that is willing to listen.... Retelling a Grimm Brothers' fairytale or a Pueblo Indian myth allows me scope to tell a story that has a solid structure derived from the inner truths that are the kernels of all legends, myths and fairytales. In all my writing I m first of all concerned with the story; but (and I see this more and more as I write) I m also using the narrative to explore ideas and suggest answers to questions about why and how the world works. I hope my books are entertaining, and I also get pleasure from thinking they may be sharing a little more substance with readers. Robert D. San Souci currently resides in the Bay Area.
