A schedule of assignments for the purchase of books for the past two years follows. "Regular" assignments are likely to be repeated from year to year, but the amount for any one purpose or department has frequently been changed by the Committee when making the annual assignments. The Committee again authorized the Director to make necessary minor changes or adjustments among these assignments during the year. The Library has also been adding to its collection of early English newsletters as they come on the market and as fundc would permit. About 1,500 numbers from 1641 to 1665 were purchased this year. During the past year as in recent years, over 50 manuscripts and rare printed books in distant libraries have been photographed for us; these are on permanent photographic paper, or are mounted on cloth, and all are bound and add greatly to our permanent resources. Most of these photographs are purchased for immediate use by members of the faculty; but scholars in other universities may borrow them by inter-library loan.

7 -5- Through the activities of a committee of the American Library Association, arrangements have been made to film, during the next few years,. the bookes in English in the British Museum printed before The Library has informally subscribed for these films,, and has received several installments of these books on films. Occasionally other little used rare books have been secured on film. An increasing number of books and pamphlets are each year received as gifts and add much to our resources. These gifts come from members of the faculty, from alumni, students, and friends, but more largely from organizations (e.g. corporations, societies, institutions) and governmental agencies in every part of the world. 11 -9- The Library is on the mailing list of over 19,000 departments, bureaus, offices, corporations, societies, associations, institutions, etc., located in all parts of the world, though chiefly in the United States, to receive free their current bulletins, reports, and other publications. However, continued effort is necessary to keep our name on some of these lists and to secure additional kinds of material, much of it published many years ago. During the year the Library sent 11,943 copies (10,956 in ) of 146 (127 in ) University of Illinois publications to libraries and other institutions on our gift or exchange lists; other offices on the campus in accordance with exchange arrangements made by the Library, mailed 22,469 (15,688 in ) copies of 47 (40 in ) additional publications. New exchanges of publications were arranged with 55 (55 in ) additional institutions, and exchanges were discontinued with 14 (9 in ). Regular exchange of publications is now carried on with 1,809 foreign and 1,519 domestic institutions. From September 1936 to June 1937, the Library spent approximately $10,900 for NYA help under the Univesity Student Program, and regularly employed between 80 and 89 students each month. The supervision of these students has occupied a good deal of staff time, but the work which has been accomplished with their help has much more than compensated us. A complete listing of the NYA projects is not necessary, but the six following are examples taken at random: 1. The revision of the subject headings in the card catalog, which was started last year, was continued with the assistance of three NYA students, The subject headings were revised to conform with the present Library of Congress headings. 2. The theses written at the University of Illinois from 1874 to 1910 were recataloged and additional information was placed on the author cards in the catalog. 3. The check list of all books in the University Library which were printed before 1700, begun two years ago, was completed, showing that we had 5,575 titles of these early and valuable books. 4. The building up of our collection of CCC newspapers, and the sorting of them were continued. 5. Cracked bindings on about 2,500 old books were repaired; some worn books from Reserve book room and from the Browsing Room were recased. 6. Clipping, pasting on cards and filing alphabetically about 24,000 titles of current accessions of the British Museum Library, these entries forming a supplement to the new volumes of the British Museum Catalog. The number of volumes in the University.Library on June 50, 1937 in Urbana was 1,032,822; in Chicago 53,390, tot.l in the University, 1,086,212.
