3 General Guidelines Title page The author is expected to propose a catchy title to the Principal Editor, based on the content of the chapter, in the final draft. Include full author name and title, as you would like it to appear (ie. Middle name or initial, hyphenated surname). Headings and sub-headings The body of the chapter should be broken up into paragraphs, and where applicable, headings and subheadings should be used to make all information easy to locate and read. Header / footer The chapter should not contain any headers or footers. Font and size Submit all drafts in Arial or Times New Roman, 12 point. Use spacing or bold for emphasis for headings and subheadings in the same font as the body text. Case Studies Submit a minimum of three (3) case studies related to the content of the chapter and indicate where they should be inserted by including (Box X) at the end of the sentence. Figures, Tables and Maps In collaboration with the data collection team assigned to your chapter, submit a minimum of six (6) and a maximum of 10 figures, tables or maps to support your chapter. Messages Submit three (3) proposals for potential personalities to include a short message as part of your chapter. 3

4 Terminology Abbreviations and acronyms Expand even familiar abbreviations at the first mention in each main chapter or section of the report, and use the short form in parentheses (round brackets) thereafter. Alphabetization Any list of more than one country must be in alphabetical order. Bullet Points If bullet points maintain a sentence structure, use semi-colons at the end of each bullet, second-to-last bullet point should end with ; and If the bullet points are enumerating a list: Capitalize the first letter of each bullet point, whether the bullet is a single word or a sentence, or forms part of a longer sentence. The last bullet has a period. If individual bullet points are single words or short phrases, they do not take a full stop, except for the last point. Currency The Global Report series uses US$ as the main form of currency. Foreign Words Use the local name for organizations and programmes, followed by a translation in parentheses if you deemed necessary. Geographical and political designations Geographical and political designations take initial capitals for specific titles, but not for general descriptions: Canadian Government/Government of Canada (but the government issued a decree) East/West Africa Eastern/Western Europe (political) (but eastern/western Europe geographical) When the word state is used in reference to a political unit it should be capitalized with the name of a specific state (State of New York), but not in general references (the states of Brazil). When the word government is used in reference to a specific government it should be capitalized (the French Government), but not in general references (the government was democratically elected). Numbers Spell out numbers from one to nine. If a sentence contains numbers both below 10 and above, use numerals. There were 13 candidates, 7 of whom were women. Always spell out numbers at the beginning of a sentence. 4

5 Use points, not commas, for decimals. The number of decimal places depends on the context, but avoid mixing when comparing data (i.e. add zeros): 5.60%, 3.33% and 19.20%, respectively. Use a comma in four-digit numbers and above (except in tables, where space is limited). Organizations and Titles When an organization has English as one of its official working languages, follow the English spelling and hyphenation that it uses for its own name and titles: Director-General of UNESCO, Executive Director of UNICEF, Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development. Punctuation The comma is used to separate clauses and phrases, direct speech, and items in lists. The following list covers common cases of comma misuse: It should not be used before and in such phrases as men, women and children But, for clarity, a comma can be used before and in a phrase such as: consisted of children, adolescents and adults, and many other groups It should not be used after e.g., etc. and i.e. (note that a comma is needed before these abbreviations): In capital cities, e.g. Algiers, Cairo, Rabat, Tripoli, Tunis Unless unavoidable, e.g. and i.e. should not be used in body text and should be substituted with for example and that is / in other words. They are acceptable, however, in text within parentheses or footnotes. Quoted matter, obviously, should not be amended.) Place punctuation outside of quote marks unless it is part of the quoted matter. Use double quotation marks for quotes within quotes. Examples: At no time were air quotes mentioned before that year. The evidence suggests increasing competency of literacy in many languages rather than seeking to eradicate illiteracy. Examples of comma placement: Leave me alone, she said, I m tired. 5

18 Referencing References to cited works must be included in the bibliography at the end of the chapter, not in footnotes Authors must use the Harvard Referencing Style. Citations are listed in alphabetical order by the author s last name. If there are multiple sources by the same author, then citations are listed in order by the date of publication. Additional information, definitions, exceptions can be included in footnotes. Harvard Referencing The Global Report series uses Harvard referencing: the author and year of publication is placed within parentheses in the text, full reference goes in a list at the end of the work. In-Text Citations Overview Each in-text citation generally displays the last name of the author year the source was published. The in-text citation is usually located at the end of the quoted or paraphrased sentence. In-Text Citations for One Author The author s last name year that the source was published are placed in the parentheses. Gatsby s infatuation with Daisy is often revealed in the story, often in simple phrases such as,... he turned toward her with a rush of emotion (Fitzgerald, 2004). **If the author s name is already used in the body of the text, then students should exclude it from the in-text citation. Fitzgerald s use of old sport throughout the novel suggests that Gatsby considered Nick Carraway a close friend (2004). In-Text Citations for Two or Three Authors When a source has two authors, place both authors names in the order in which they appear on the source, with the word and separating them. Examples: A range of values can express emotion, too. Stark, high-contrast drawings may carry a strong emotional charge (Lazzari and Schleiser, 2011). 18

19 Rather than constantly seeking approval from others, try to seek approval from the person who matters the most - yourself (Bardes, Shelley and Schmidt, 2011). In-Text Citations for Four or More Authors Only use the first listed author s name in the in-text citation, followed by et al. publishing year. It can be said that knowledge of the stages of growth and development helps predict the patient s response to the present illness or the threat of future illness (Potter et al., 2013). Potter et al. (2013) go on to explain that among the most Catholic Filipinos, parents keep the newborn inside the home until after the baptism to ensure the baby s health and protection. In-Text Citations for Corporate Authors Use the name of the organization in place of the author. Dr. Scharschmidt completed her residency in 2012, joined the Leaders Society in 2013, and became a new volunteer this year to encourage other young dermatologists in her area to join her in leadership giving (Dermatology Foundation, 2014). If the name of the organization is used in the text, place only the year in parentheses. The Dermatology Foundation (2013) stated in their report that industry also played an important role in the success of the highly rated annual DF Clinical Symposia Advances in Dermatology. In-Text Citations for No Author When an author s name cannot be found, place the title of the text in the parentheses, followed by the publishing year. Lisa wasn t scared, she was simply shocked and caught off guard to notice her father in such a peculiar place (Lost Spaces, 2014). In-Text Citations with No Date When a date is not included in a source, simply omit that information from the in-text citation.
