2 Last Name 2 Assignment Read each speech carefully (watch it with the video when available). You must first annotate your chosen text for major rhetorical strategies or moves before you write your essay. We recommend reading the text all the way through without annotating the first time and then highlighting important words, phrases and/or sections, as well as writing relevant notes in the margins. Then choose one from each century about which to write a well-developed rhetorical analysis essay, where you analyze the speaker s purpose or intent in using specific rhetorical strategies, such as specific word choice or sentence structure, as well as logical and emotional appeals, in relation to his or her argument or overall rhetorical purpose. Ask yourself the following questions: What is the writer/speaker using or doing to get his or her point across? Why did he or she write that sentence in a certain way or use that specific wording? What purpose does it serve? Be sure to include specific references to the text (i.e., quoted or paraphrased sections) in your analysis. The essay must include an introduction, at least 2 body paragraphs of rhetorical analysis and a conclusion (you are encouraged to use the attached outline as a guide for your essay). Word choice, grammar, spelling, punctuation, thesis, topic sentences, evidence and analysis will all be considered in your grade. The essay must be typed in 2016 MLA Format (see attachment) and turned in on the first day of class, along with your annotated text. You do NOT need a Work Cited or parenthetical citations for the essay

5 Last Name MLA Format Page Formatting 1) Use Times New Roman 12-point font. 2) Double space with no extra spacing before or after paragraphs. In Microsoft Word, click on the Page Layout tab and click on the Paragraph tab, which will open up a new window for Indents and Spacing. Look to see that the Before and After line spacing is set to 0 and then click on Set as Default, so you don t have to keep resetting the spacing. 3) Set margins to 1 inch on each side. On Microsoft Word, click on Page Layout and then Margins to check. The header should be.5 inch from the top of the page. 4) In Microsoft Word, insert header by clicking on Insert and then Page Number. Choose Top of Page Plain Number 3. Type in your last name in front of the page number and be sure to add a space in between your name and page number. Check to see that your font is still Times New Roman 12 point. 5) Note: Google Docs does most of the formatting correctly, but you do need to click on Format, then Line Spacing and then Custom Spacing. There, be sure to set the line spacing to 2 and the Paragraph Spacing Before and After to 0. Quotes When you don t have to use a parenthetical citation, be sure to put the punctuation inside the quotation mark. For example, type Always use correct MLA Format. In regard to block quotes (more than four lines), MLA has changed the indentation to a ½ inch from the left margin from its original 1 inch. However, quotation marks are still not used and the period still goes before the parenthetical citation and not after.
