2 ABOUT OREGON STATE: Oregon State begins its 84th season of varsity wrestling this week with a dual match here at Hofstra before heading to the Cornell Tournament on Saturday. In the Beavers went overall and in the Pac-10 in duals, then placed sixth at the Pac-10 meet and tied for 39th at the NCAAs. OREGON STATE HEAD COACH JOE WELLS: Joe Wells, who is in his 14th season as Oregon State s head coach, has led the Beavers to a Pacific-10 title and four top-10 finishes at the NCAA Championships during his time at OSU. Since taking over the Beaver program prior to the season, Wells is for a winning percentage of.616. Under Wells, OSU has had two national champions, 17 All-Americans and 22 conference champions. The Beavers were Pacific-10 Conference champions under Wells in 1994 and he has twice been named the conference s Coach of the Year. OSU has finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Championships four times in Wells tenure, placing second in 1995, fourth in 1994, eighth in 1996 and tying for ninth in Wells, who has coached numerous World Teams for the United States, is a 1972 Iowa graduate. He was a two-time placewinner at the Big Ten meet and was the 1976 U.S. Wrestling Federation freestyle champ. He spent 17 seasons as an assistant coach at Iowa and Michigan before coming to Oregon State. OREGON STATE THIRD IN ALL-TIME DUAL MEET WINS: OSU rates as one of the best dual meet teams in collegiate wrestling history. The Beavers were third in all-time dual meet wins among Division I schools going into the season. OSU currently has an alltime dual meet record of and a.751 winning percentage. THE PRIDE THIS YEAR: The Hofstra wrestling team opened the season on Tuesday with a tie at Army. The Pride, who are ranked 18th in the USA Today/NWCA/Intermat NCAA Division I Preseason Poll, are also ranked 16th by the Amateur Wrestling News and the Wrestling Mall, and 19th by W.I.N Magazine to begin the season. Last year, the Pride posted a 13-5 record and captured its fourth consecutive Colonial Athletic Association championship and the fifth straight conference title overall. Coming off a school-best 17th place finish at the 2005 NCAA Division I Wrestling Championships, Hofstra Pride Wrestling Coach Tom Ryan will be looking to move into the elite air this season with, quite possibly, the deepest roster in school history. Hofstra, which sent nine wrestlers to the NCAA Championships last year, returns 12 letterwinners, including seven starters, seven NCAA qualifiers and five conference champions. The Pride opened the season against Army on Tuesday with six returnees who competed last year and four new faces in the starting line-up. Leading the pack is senior Mike Patrovich (16-5), who returns after winning the CAA title at 165 pounds and just missing All-America honors at the NCAA Championships. Patrovich will move up to 174 pounds this season. Junior James Strouse (22-12), who won his first CAA title at 157 and made his second national championship appearance last season returns at 157-pounds. Sophomores Joe Rovelli and Dave Tomasette are also coming off outstanding seasons. Rovelli, who challenged teammate Charles Griffin for top CAA newcomer honors, captured the conference title at 184-pounds and finished the year at Tomasette was a conference finalist at 125 pounds and posted a mark while making his first national championship appearance. Griffin, who posted a 27-6 mark last season, is expected to red-shirt this season. Junior John Manarte, who posted a record in and red-shirted last season, will open the season at 141-pounds. Junior Chris Vondruska posted a 9-7 mark last season and takes over the 165-pound spot this season. The four newcomers are led by junior Chris Weidman at 197-pounds. Weidman, who red-shirted the season at Hofstra, was a twotime All-American at Nassau Community College. The Pride, who had trouble filling the heavyweight spot last season, should not have that problem this season with the arrival of another two-time All-American from Nassau CC, Jon Andriac. Freshman Robbie Deibert, a tenacious wrestler who posted a record with 282 takedowns at Tri-Valley High School in Pennsylvania the past four years, opens the season as the starter at 133-pounds. Freshman Mike Martini, who captured the Rhode Island state championship at 145-pounds as a senior and was a state finalist as a sophomore (130 pounds) and junior (140 pounds), will open the season at 149-pounds in place of two-time All-American senior Jon Masa. HONORARY COACH OF THE MATCH: Hofstra Wrestling is proud to welcome Mr. Terence Smolev as its honorary Coach of the Match tonight. Mr. Smolev is a longtime supporter of Pride Athletics and a member of the Hofstra University Board of Trustees, A 1966 graduate of Hofstra, Smolev earned a master's degree at NYU and a law degree from American University. He is a member of the American, New York State and Nassau County Bar Associations and the New York State Association of School Attorneys.
