1 Student Writing Intensive C Due Week 3 Rename this file with your name: FirstLastName_3_SWI.doc. Do not remove any instructions. Assignment Due Before next class, submit this renamed document on Engrade. It should include the assignment instructions, checklist, 3 KWOs, and 2 paragraphs. Every week: I return papers on Engrade in a message. If your parents have an Engrade account, I will send your papers back to them as well as to you. Required (see checklist): Read over my comments on returned papers, ideally with a parent. Please message me if you have questions about my comments. o Since work is cumulative, master concepts as we go; they can quickly snowball. o Keep a list of errors you frequently make. Use that as an added checklist to help you proofread. On returned papers, to see what the bubble notes go with, follow the line from them to an arrow, which points to where that correction needs to be made. o The arrow is NOT a comma! o The delete mark is just a line drawn through something. The bubble note explains why. Check Engrade frequently for messages to help with questions as they arise or to give tips we did not have time to cover in class. Engrade messages are required class content. Day 1 No DVD this week. Keep your binder organized and handouts available during class. Chanticleer 3.1 Print the symbols and abbreviations list from Engrade. Read through it, and work to include as many legal symbols and abbreviations as you can into your KWOs. Today, write two KWOs with no more than 3 key words per note: Write a KWO on Color for Life (p. 17 binder, bottom paragraph). Write a KWO on Doctors (p. 13 binder). Day 2 Chanticleer 3.2 Write the paragraph about cephalopods from your Color for Life KWO. Follow proper formatting. Include at least one who or which clause in the paragraph and underline just one who or which. Remember to check if it needs commas see tip beneath checklist. Day 3 Chanticleer 3.3 Write a KWO on Pericles (article posted on Engrade). Then write a paragraph from your KWO following instructions from Day 2. Remember to underline one who or which. No credit if not underlined! 1 Institute for Excellence in Writing, L.L.C. All rights reserved. Duplication or distribution prohibited.
2 Day 4 Chanticleer 3.4 Bring to class your edited version. Proofread both paragraphs for punctuation, grammar, spelling, and no contractions. Proofread by reading your paragraphs aloud. Do use a spell check but turn off your grammar check. It will teach grammar confusion! Have you checked for the errors you made in last week s work? Have you heeded the tips on the checklist and in the grammar specials beneath it? After you proofread your own work, ask your beloved in-house editor to help you check. Remember to ask your parent for initials where indicated on the checklist. Day 5 Read the story of the miller, his son, and their donkey p.23 in your binder. Bring it to class, along with Fix It and class notes. Before class, submit this renamed file on Engrade. It should have in it 3 KWOs and 2 paragraphs on the pages following the checklist. Bring to class a list of symbols or abbreviations you think worked well in your KWOs this week. Also bring your edited Fix It passages and class notes. Download all applicable files for Week Late Paper Policy for IEW Online Level C 1. Papers are due before class starts on the due date. 2. Only with a written exception from a parent prior to the due date and only for extenuating circumstances (illness, family emergency, vacation), an assignment may be turned in up to two days after the due date, not counting Sundays. 3. Unexcused papers not turned in on time will lose ten points daily. If they are later than two days after the due date, they receive an M (missing), which factors into your grade as a zero. 2 Institute for Excellence in Writing, L.L.C. All rights reserved. Duplication or distribution prohibited.

7 Write the paragraph on cephalopods. Remember not to hit enter at the end of lines in a paragraph. Luke Brandl Marci Harris Student Writing Intensive-C Color for Life Cephalopod s skin can be very colorful. The layers of cells can change color and create patterns. The color cells, or Chromophores, can be found under the skin. Each cell has a sac which contains color. When the muscles around the sac contract, the sac opens wider, exposing more color. The sac closes when the muscles relax. These cells can even create patterns like stripes and do so immediately. They can also help with camouflage. Luke Brandl Marci Harris Student Writing Intensive-C Pericles The ancient Athenians admired the orator and politician Pericles, but his family resented his rule. His objective was to make Athens rich and powerful. He never took bribes for selfish profit which made the Athenians trust and have confidence in him. Pericles s family was not pleased with him. Although he had inherited a large estate, Pericles was too stingy and carefully counted all the daily expenses. He would not trust anyone with the money, including his sons. Pericles even neglected his old teacher, Anaxagoras, until he was starving. Pericles had a change Commented [MH15]: Commas set off nonessential who-which clauses Commented [MH16]: No comma: mid-sentence prep phrase Grammar special! of heart, ran to his bedside, and begged him not to die and deprive him of such a valued counselor. Anaxagoras replied saying that even those who use a lamp put oil in it so it will give light. Great job relaying the information in your Pericles Remember the rule about legal abbreviations! 8 Institute for Excellence in Writing, L.L.C. All rights reserved.
