1 AmericanRadioHistory.Com VOLUME 3 - NO 9 - WEEK OF MARCH 8TH 1986 E M R in partnership with Billboard EUROTIPSHEET The Pan -European Newsweekly Of Music & Media ARD SURVEY UNVEILS RADIO HABITS STRONG REGIONAL DIFFERENCES EXPOSED by Wolfgang Spahr A survey of West German listening habits carried out by the AssOciation of German Broadcasters The youth -orientated 'Club' so again in the early afternoon.. pro- (ARD) has shown that radio is far more popular among young people than among their elders, who still tend to regard newspapers and television as the most important media. According to the research findings, young people in the age group listen to an average 117 minutes of radio a day, compared to 101 minutes spent watching tv, 28 minutes listening to records, and 20 minutes reading books. Only 13 minutes a day are devoted to newspapers, and barely 7 minutes to magazines. Nearly 45% of youngsters listen to the radio be - gramme, broadcast in the early evening on NDR attracts over 30% listenership. Among the over -55 age group, priorities are totally different. Only 21% regard radio as of any importance at all, and then only for relaxation or companionship. Once evening tv schedules begin, the radio is almost invariably switched off. Daily newspapers are seen as "very important", and tv barely less so. Among the over -65s tv becomes of paramount importance. Marked regional variations are also apparent in the ARD figures. Over the whole country an average (continued on page 3) MUSIC & MEDIA fore going to school, and 24% FRENCH TV PUSHES LOCAL TALENT CLIP DEAL CONCLUDED by Cathy Inglis Broadcasting on the new French channel TV 6 began on Saturday, 22nd February with a 3 hour transmission repeated three times throughout the day and with the promise that this would soon increase. The inauguration last Saturday featured numerous artists congratulating the new channel and wishing it well, including a.o. The Communards, Bonnie Tyler, Johnny Hallyday and Renaud. The French government has given an 18 year concession to the new channel. It is estimated that TV 6 could eventually reach 35 million viewers who would be required to make very few changes on their antennae to receive the TV 6 signals. Initially TV 6 will be received in Paris, Marseilles, Lyon, Bordeaux, Nancy, Grenoble, Nimes, Lens, Lille, Strasbourg and Le Havre but during the second part of '86 many more cities will be able to receive the broadcast. The total budget for programming is only a quarter of that of the other new national channel France 5, the Seydoux-Berlusconi ownership. From this budget TV 6 also has to originate a good number of French programme productions..thirty percent is planned for the first year rising to 50% in Amongst these other productions will also be the creation of approximately 100 video clips with French (continued on page 3) NRJ, the Paris -based FM radio chain, will handle the music programming for the recently launched 6th French channel. IMMINENT END OF GERMAN ROCKPALAST SUCCESSOR TO BE LAUNCHED IN 1987 A fall -off in ratings and a shortage of available superstar talent are given as key reasons for the shock decision to axe "Rockpalast", Europe's biggest and oldest live television rock concert series. WDRTV in Cologne has decided that the March 15 show will be the last of a remarkable run of 500 concerts in 11 years, 23 of them carried through Europe via Eurovision. Producer Peter Ruechel says it by Jim Sampson is time to "re-evaluate" the series and "adapt it to a changing media market." But WDR confirms it plans to launch a successor to "Rock - palest" early 1987, with further international live concert networking a distinct possibility. The final show will feature Jackson Browne, Big Country and leading German band BAR. 3 M UNITED KINGDOM Billy Ocean stays at no. 1 for already 4 weeks in a row while Diana Ross has in 6 weeks time achieved a no. 2 position. Survivor is up to no. 5 (from 8) and straight in at no. 7 is the 5th generation of rock 'n' roll, Sigue Sigue Sputnik. The new entry at 7 of the Giorgio Moroder produced Love Missile F1-11 is the highest en try a single makes in the English charts since Madonna came in straight at no. 4 with 'Groove'. It is however the 2nd best entry for a new act since Young Ones' Neil came in at 5 in 1984 with the Traffic cover Hole In My Shoe! New in the Top 10 is Paul Hardcastle's Don't Waste My Time and the sunny Bangles are in 3 weeks up to no. 10 with the Prince written Manic Monday. More chart action for Depeche Mode (15-23), Huey Lewis with the re-released Power Of Love (18-36), Alexander O'Neal (24-34), Tavares (25-39) and Frank Sinatra with The Theme From New York, New York (28-41). GERMANY Falco and Muenchener Freiheit remain in first and second positions respectively with local duo, Modern Talking, up to no 3 from 12 with Brother Louie. Mr. Mister are continuing to climb steadily with Kyrie (11-16) and other good moves for local group, Marietta (Fire and Ice, 13-22) and for Cock Robin's The Promise You Made (16-37). Depeche Mode have highest new entry with Stripped (23), followed by Bad Boys Blue's Kisses And Tears (33), Julianne Werding's Stimmen lm Wind (49) and Italian singer Sandy Marton's Exotic And Erotic (52). FRANCE A new no. 1 this week for Pierre Bachelet with LAn 2001 up from no. 7. He is followed by two other local artists, Daniel Balavoine and Jean - Luc LaHaye and the rest of the top 10 remains very static. Good moves for Niagara's Tchiki Bourn (23-41), Muriel Dacq's Tropique up to 30 from 42 in only its second week and the two identically titled singles The Power Of Love. Jennifer Rush's has risen to 32 from 46 and Huey Lewis' to 36 from 57. The highest new entry this week is Sade's Is It A Crime. HOLLAND Billy Ocean stays the obvious chart topper this week followed by Survivor and Sophia George. Madonna makes a good jump from 15 to 5 with Borderline and James Brown is new in the top 10 with Living in America. The American band Cock Robin is extremely popular in Holland, their second European single The Promise You Made is the definite fave on Dutch radio (for 2 weeks now topping the Airplay hitparades) and moving from 26 to 15. Other moves for Mr. Mister's Kyrie, Full Force and the two Austrian acts E and Falco. Dutch radio has re -discovered the impact of Miami Sound Machine's Conga and it stands a fairly good chance of entering the charts next week. ITALY Italian duo Via Verdi still top the Italian (combined) charts with their disco single Diamond (for a photo of the successful duo see page 3), but the competition with Matia Bazar's Ti Sento is very strong. Apart from Matia Bazar, Ariston is further very successful with the disco single of the Italian threesome Canton. The single is currently at no. 3 and was produced by the in -demand team of Stock, Aitken and Waterman (a.o. Princess). A -Ha dips to no. 4 and Drum Theatre's Eldorado and Bronski's Perfect Beat follow. Other successful singles for Double, Wham, Den Harrow and Lionel Richie. PORTUGAL The monthly magazine Musica & Som has recently announced awards based on the singles and albums chart that they weekly publish. The most popular album artists included Dire Straits, Scorpions (Gold Ballads), Bryan Adams, Wham and the Portuguese fadosinger Amelia Rodrigues. The most popular singles included We Are The World, Still Loving You (Scorpions), You're My Heart (Modern Talking), Wham's Last Christmas and Jim Diamond's I Should Have Known Better. AUSTRIA Looking at the best played singles on the national Austrian channel 0E3, one notes the dominance of foreign products in favour of local ones. Wham still has best played single followed by Lionel Richie, Talking Heads, A - Ha and Eurythmics. The most popular local item on 0E3 is the football star Hans Krankl with Lonely Boy. Upcoming new airplay for Starship's Sara and ELO's Ceiling America. SWITZERLAND Falco stays at no. 1, his Jeanny is already for 6 weeks the chart topper in Switzerland! Modern Talking are doing very well, Brother Louie is new in the Top 10 this week (6-26). The former German chart topper Klaus & Klaus are also new in the Top 10, An Der Nordseekueste from 15 to 8 and Talk Talk have highest entry at 21 with Life's What You Make It. BELGIUM Survivor in its 2nd week still at no. 1 followed by Andrea and James Brown. The fastest mover in the Belgian chart is the new Modern Talkingsingle (12-40 only in its second week). New in the Top 20 is Spanish disco act Magazine 60 with Rendez-Vous Costa Del Sol and another good move for Sophia George. DENMARK Local act Walter & Carlo remain on top as does A -Ha at no. 2. Storming up the charts is the Eldorado signing Johnny Reimer (3-10) and Modern Talking's Brother Louie is new in the Top 10 (8-14). Fastest moving single for Depeche Mode and C.C. Catch is new at 19. Other entries for Billy Ocean. Mr. Mister and Dire Straits. SWEDEN No way is Lionel Richie willing to leave the top, Say You still reigns over A -Ha on 2 and Pet Shop Boys on 3. New in the top 10 is Parlophone signing Hazell Dean with They Say it's Gonna Rain (6-16). Good moves for Survivor and James Brown. As everywhere Modern Talking's new single is doing extremely well, new at 11 this week. SPAIN 'A new no. 1 as Lionel Richies Say You replaces Springsteen's Janey from the no. 1 spot. Propaganda have a long life in Spain, as their P Machinery creeps up this week up to no. 2. On the SER channels Lionel Richie is also the definite fave, as well as the charity single from Dionne & Friends. Other popular singles for local acts Los Nikis (El Imperio Contrataca) and Luz (Rufino). The Italian star Sandy Marton gets substantial backing on Spanish radio with his Exotic And Erotic (also new in Germany this week). It took the single quite some time to accomplish this. Only Dire Straits have done better with their run of 17 uninterrupted weeks with last year's Brothers In Arms. With some slight moves for Mr. Mister, Kate Bush and Simply Red, the first 20 positions of the album chart are quite static. But Talk Talk bring a welcome interruption with their new album, The Colour Of Spring, coming in at 21, which is so far the highest entry for an album in The album is already a good seller in the, Germany and Benelux and a lave album on European radio as well. Album programmers share their enthusiasm with us on tracks like I Don't Believe In You, Living In Another World and Time, It's Time. It is obvious that with the current hit successes of Rocky IV the DST remains best played album in Europe. One other album which programmers love because there's plenty to choose from, is the ELO album, The Balance Of Power. While Ozzy Osbourne remains quite steady at 16 in the Hot 100, his former musical partners Black Sabbath have 2nd highest entry with a new album for Vertigo entitled Seventh Star. Featuring the strong guitarist Tony lomml and singer Glenn Hughes (ex - Deep Purple) it is the best album since their '81 LP The Mob Rules, Check out the title track where the band gradually climbs towards a climax or the fast and speedy Turn To Stone and Danger Zone. But there is more potential radio material in Heart Like A Wheel, with its slow and bluesy power chords. Virgin expects a new album from Tim Finn, ex -leader of the Kiwi band Split Enz. Big Canoe will be his 2nd solo album, produced by Nick Launay, who built up a reputation with other Aussie bands like Midnight Oil and INXS. More news from Down Under comes from Aussie band Mental As Anything. We have always loved those 'creatures of leisure' responsible for miniature masterpieces like The Nips Are Getting Bigger and Let's Not Get Sentimental. The pub -rockers have joined up with Richard Gottehrer (Of Go-Go's and Blondie fame) to make their 5th album Fundamental. Hopefully they will now break in Europe after their recent signing to CBS International. Although it takes some time to appreciate the value of this album, well -crafted pop songs like You're So Strong, Date With Destiny, Big Wheel and Live It Up (the current single) are the definite stand -outs. The American quartet The Calf have a penchant for driving and positive songs, operating in the same field as The Comsat Angels or Simple Minds. Michael Been is a compelling vocalist and on the opening track Everywhere) Go he is joined by Simple Mind's Jim Kerr and Peter Gabriel. We think that! Still Believe is the obvious choice for a single. LONDON CALLING by Howard Marks Well well, after a very quiet and rather boring start to the new year everything seems to be happening all at once. The Rolling Stones have been in London for a secret performance at London 100 Club in which they played to a very select audience. Madonna & her husband came into London amidst a blaze of publicity to complete filming on her new movie and the newspapers have been full of gossip about WHAM. Sique Sique Sputnik seem to have committed the great Rock & Roll Swindle part II, and the entire record business has been talking about them. Let's face it, either you love them or hate them, but whatever way you look at it, the hype has worked. The news of the final split in the Wham ranks comes as no suprise (the music business has been taking bets on it for ages). The official reason for the split, is that George Michael is unhappy about the new company which will be looking after WHAM's interests. One of the directors of the company has dealings with South Africa, and George is unwilling to be connected with the company. However it is well known that George is the most hard working member of the band, and that he is unhappy with the situation as it stands. While George takes off for a solo careeer, Andrew is said to be heading for Hollywood. Surely you can't drive racing cars round the streets of Hollywood. It looks as though we are in for a return to the styles and fashion of the 1950s here in London. With the new movie ABSOLUTE BE- GINNERS about to open soon, many fashion designers are looking to the fashion of that period, as Jeff Banks the designer explained on Mike Sparrows show at BBC Radio London recently. Several record companies have preempted the fashion by signing new bands with a 50s feel to their music. PRT records have signed the KEYTONES, and EMI have signed a two girl one boy trio called HEYDAY. Radio One have announced their new schedules from May, and I must say that many people have been speculating on where Johnny Beerling's axe would fall. There are actually very few changes coming up other than Mike Smith getting the breakfast show. Paul Jordan and Anne Marie Gray lose their shows, and Richard Skinner loses his top 40 chart show to Bruno Brooks. Steve Wright will now broadcast Monday to Friday instead of having his Sunday morning show. The new DJ to join the station will be Simon Mayo. Look out for a couple of new TV shows in the pipeline. Thames Television will have THE BIZ. LWT have a series for Channel 4 called CLUB MIX, and SOULTRAIN will be back for a second series, and Tyne Tees will have a new Saturday kids show to take over from NO 73. The Ip is slated for release in April, a single will be out before that, up till now no titles have been announced. Chrysalis is the lucky company they've signed to. The band has taken some time off from studio work to support SIMPLY RED on their tour who are scoring high again with the new single Jericho * THE DANSE SOCIETY have come up with yet another single titled Hold On, an album will be released next month * MATT BIAN- CO is touring Europe from 17th of March till end of May * A new single from the PET SHOP BOYS called Love Comes Quickly (indeed it does) * The THOMPSON TWINS are out on the road again, having just finished Australian gigs, they are now in Japan for a string of performances. The music video chart which appears in these two magazines will be broadcast to 5.3 million homes in the 13 countries reached by the satellite network. Gary Davies will host the show. Sky Channel aims to reach 9.3 million homes by the end of this year and hopes to expand to Canada and the Far East.* The new French tv channel TV 6 recently concluded an agreement with the music industry. TV 6 has consented to be solely responsible for the payments of video clips which obviously constitute an important part of this largely musical TV channel. Whereas the public channels are still refusing to submit to the sum stipulated by the professionals (4.000 francs per showing), the example of TV 6 is believed by the executives to be a positive step towards safeguarding the professional interests of the video industry. The price agreed upon at TV 6 has been arranged in such a way as to take into account the potential ratings. It is expected to be around francs by the end of the year,4 Virgin has announced that it intends to restructure its and worldwide video operations. Having recently acquired the pioneering video label VCL, Virgin now plans to form a new music label, headed by Angus Margerison, formerly of Picture Music International. The VCL label identity will continue and Virgin Vision marketing and acquisitions chief Michael Watts will oversee the whole video operation. Robert Devereux, Virgin Vision md, says: "Merging all our worldwide interests was of enormous benefit to both Virgin anf VCL. 18 AmericanRadioHistory.Com RE -LAUNCHES DBS OPERATION TO START APRIL '86 The British government has relaunched its efforts to introduce Direct Broadcasting by Satellite (DBS) in the U.K., despite the failure of the initial attempt earlier in the '80s. This time round, however, the government has dropped its insistence that a British -designed satellite must be used. If necessary, says Home Secretary Douglas Hurd, DBS contractors can look abroad. Hurd confirms that the Independent Broadcasting Authority, which represents Britain's commercial tv companies, will be asked to advertise the franchise to operate a DBS service in April this year. allowing three months for applications and awarding the contract before the end of The IBA, which says it is "enthusiastic and intends to proceed with all possible speed', recently produced a feasibility study on reviving DBS plans. The intention is to have three new entertainment -based tv channels by 1990 at the latest, beamed direct to satellite dishes in individual homes. At the moment ownership of such dishes in the U.K. is practically zero, though there has been some development of SMATV systems intended for hotels, apartment blocks and the like. Two further channels available on the satellite will be held in reserve till three years after the launch, the government says. It is expected that this will give a great push to the French artist and will help to break more of them in the international market place since one of the difficulties in breaking French acts abroad has often been the lack of video clips. Music programming for TV 6 will be handled by NRJ, the leading French FM radio chain which has more than 40 stations (either in partnership or through franchising) throughout France. These will all originate from the newly -remodeled Apollo Theatre, the legendary New York City show business landmark, and will be hosted by B.K. Kirkland, the popular radio personality at WBLS- FM/New York. Norman Pattiz, chairman and president of Westwood One, says of the new show: "Ware delighted to be working with Inner City Broadcasting (who recently reached as agreement with Westwood) and The Apollo Theatre on this series. We believe that this will be a programme in great demand by both radio stations and advertisers." Germany's first major radio programme syndication service for private commercial radio stations is being started by Bertelsmann, Europe's biggest media group. The news breaks alongside the announcement that Bavaria is to license some 92 low -power FMers in the next three or four months. There will be similar low -power ra dio expansion soon in Baden- Wuerttemberg and eventually in other states in the control of the Christian Democratic Party. The states, not the federal government, have to pass legislation authorizing broadcasting in Germany. As yet, only Munich has commercially -viable broadcast radio stations. This important new development underlines the determined thrust of Bertelsmann, traditionally strong in print media and partowner of RCA/Ariola, into broadcasting. With Radio Luxumbourg, it runs German -language television programme "RTL-Plus", which is satellite -beamed to most of central Europa Bernd Schiphorst, head of Bertelsmann subsidiary UFA-Film:1V, says the syndication programming will start by being produced to specifications of local radio stations. Then the aim is to get into syndication and radio networking through satellite or land -lines. Though it's basically an entertainment service, UFA-Radio will eventually become a full -range network, with news built in. Schiphorst says it is Germany's first major radio syndication project. State -run ARD stations have an exchange programme among themselves which is not available to private stations. RADIO EXPRESS PROGRAMMING FOR EURO-RADIO STARSTREAMS LOCKS IN WITH NEW AGE MUSIC European programmers who are keen on getting updated and are interested in music news and entertainment from the US should contact Radio Express, the international programme supplier in Los Angeles. The Voice Of America, the 24 -hour English language programming service in Munich also programmes the American Top 40. Currently a French translation of this popular programme is into preparation for the French markets. With the country market gradually building up in Europa the American Country Countdown with Bob Kingsley could be a popular programme too, a weekly 4 -hour production with the most popular country singles as listed by Billboard. But there is more for the European market...a 1 hour English language special on Julio Iglesias, recorded last September and containing an exclusive interview with this superstar and featuring some of his best known songs. There is the Legends Of Rock series, the 12 two-hour stories of the greatest survivors from the Rock 'n Roll wars (featuring a.o. Supertramp, Paul McCartney, Fleetwood Mac and Rod Stewart). The 'New Age' music phenomenon is slowly making inroads on the European market and experts believe this could be the next longterm selling product. Companies like the I ndie Beggars Banquet and A&M are launching this 'spacey' and ethereal music into Europe. The Musical Starstreams programmes by Radio Express could be a good help for European programmers to get acquainted with this growing musical form. Hosted by Frank Forest each programme contains 118 minutes of programming and features artists like Andreas Vollenweider, Jean Michel Jarre and Vangelis. ( ad; \EXPRESS PHIL NNOUNCES END OF DUCTION V2000 Philips has finally admitted defeat in its efforts to establish the V2000 format in the world's video hardware markets. Production stopped 18 months ago, soon after the giant electronics concern began manufacturing machines in the rival VHS system, but only now has the company conceded that V2000 is officially dead. The losses from research and development, marketing and capital expenditure will amount to over 100 million dollars, Philips says. V2000 was introduced in 1979, replacing the earlier 1500 and 1700 series, but despite its admitted technical excellence came too late to establish itself as the undisputed market leader. The Japanese VHS and Beta systems proved more successful, and were able to offer a far wider choice of pre-recorded software as a result. Only in Philips' home territories of Holland, Austria and West Germany did V2000 achieve a substantial market share IFPI figures for 1985 show V2000 with 40% of the Austrian VCR market, 20% of the Dutch market, and 20% in Switzerland too. In no other European territory was the format's share higher than 15%, and in Britain, Europe's strongest video market, V2000 only had 2% of the hardware market, compared to 73% for VHS. CD'S BOOST ELECTRONICS MARKET STEADY EUROPEAN GROWTH Western Europe's electronics market is heading towards 100 billion dollars a year in sales value according to a survey by research group BEP. But the growth is coming from non -consumer areas like data processing: where home electronic equipment is concerned BEP predicts average growth of under 2% a year from now to 1989, with only Compact Disc players making any kind of dramatic progress. By the end of next year there will be two million CD players in European homes, BEP says, and growth will continue at better than 50% a year in value terms. By contrast, the VCR boom is over in most major markets. U.K. video hardware sales slowed from 2.4 million units in 1983 to 1.6 million last year, and the pan-european video market will register only 5.4% a year average growth up to 1989.
