QUEENS OF SOUL Aretha Franklin, the woman who defined soul, claims her throne again with the new single Freeway Of Love produced by Narada Michael Walden. Featuring Clarence Clemens of the E- Street Band, Freeway Of Love is a heavy stomping solid dance tune, so irresistable that it is bound for the charts. Her leadership however is not undisputed as other Queens Of Soul are making their way to the top; the new Tina Turner single We Don't Need Another Hero is already receiving masses of tips all over Europe and this slow ballad with an impressive choir on the end (from the soundtrack Mad Max Ill) only confirmes her status as one of the best singers around. RCA released the follow-up for the Eurythmics entitled There Must Be An Angel. Together with Sisters Are Doing It For Themselves (the duet with Aretha Franklin) 'Angel' was always one of our favourites; the lovely melody coupled with Annie's emotional voice makes it an easy choice for your radio. To anticipate the summer, try the cheerful sounds of Excitable, the new single from the female reggae band Amazulu; or get in the mood with the new Howard Jones single Life In One Day, or stick to the steady beat of the Aussie band Flash and The Pan with their Early Morning Wake Up Call. Enough good tips we think MINI SOUNDTRACK Although Vicious Games was YeIIo's first single from the Stella album, we always prefered Desire as the the perfect mini soundtrack suitable for daily programming. Well, Phonogram just released it as a follow-up and as an old Chinese proverb says: 'The first single is the choice of the record company, but the second one is chosen by the media' (thank you Dode). Our next and last tip for Euro-Crossover is for the Dutch band Original Talkatives. Pickin' Up (Carrere) combines a catchy ska beat with sunny arrangements. Check em out! It is good to see the German singer Jennifer Rush, one of our Crossover tips of last year, finally making impact in the. Her single Power Of Love (nothing to do with Frankie or Huey though) is moving from 65 to 49 in the English charts and the single also gets some tips from Italy and Spain. Another Euro- Chartmaker, the Spanish singer Ivan, is picking up good sales in Belgium, Spain, Switzerland and France and the single is bubbling under the European Top 100 at 105. Other bubblers for Feargal Sharkey and Giorgio Moroder & Philip Oakey. Frankie, the rather naive sounding doowop tune from Sister Sledge, is this week's best played single in Europe and sales wise they move up to 16 in the Top 100. See you in 2 weeks time!! 3

LONDON CALLING by Howard Marks One of the most enjoyable events of the last few weeks, was the recent Nordoff-Robbins "Music Therapy" lunch, which was holding it's tenth anniversary fund raising event recently. There were many people from the entertainment world there, too numerous to mention, but just a few faces that I spotted were Cliff Richard, Edwin Starr, Tony Blackburn, Peter Powell, Richard Powell (Actor), Richard Allinson (Capital), Alan Freeman(Capital), Janice Long (Radio One), Bruno Brooks (Radio One), Ray Moore (Radio Two) etc. etc... Dire Straits were awarded with the silver clef trophy, past names that have been honoured with the trophy have been Cliff, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Status Quo and Queen. Various members of all these bands were there too. Andrew Lloyd -Webber and Tim Rice made a very funny speech. In all a very nice event. The only thing that spoilt it for me was that it took the traffic division of the gestapo five hours to remove a nasty little yellow object from the front wheel of my car. God, these Japanese record pluggers get everywhere! For those of you in far away countries across the English channel, look out for some wonderful stuff coming out of England, for instance there is a single by 400 Blows which is wonderful, there is the new version of 'The Great Pretender" from Animal Nightlife, also you should listen to a record by a band called No -Way Hosey (I think that's how you spell it). Also look out for the new single from Amazulu. Released this week in the is the killer new single from Belouis Some (if you are reading this in Italy Neville, have a good time shooting the video). There are some good soul records coming too. One from September, and one from Mailibou, I don't know what labels those last two are on, but they are well worth checking out. On the interview front, Whitney Houston was in for a chat with Tony Blackburn, as was Bunny from Third World. Incidently, Tony Blackburn recently broadcast part of his Soul Night Out show, from WBLS in New York City. On Capital Radio Rick and Mick from Foreigner came in for a chat with Kid Jensen. Grace Jones also spoke to Kid about her role in the new Bond movie. Cher has been in for interviews with Wogan and TV -AM about the new Movie "Mask". Freddie Mercury has been doing some stuff with Simon Bates at Radio One. Dave Stewart & Annie Lennox have been on Radio One Show "Roundtable". Culture Club, have been keeping a low profile since January. The band have spent most of the year out of the, they have been recording with a new producer, and there should be product out in the during September. Meanwhile the band have been preparing for a tour of the USA in August, and drummer Jon Moss has been producing a new band for Chrysalis Records. Irish pirate radio station Radio Nova, has been broadcasting to various parts of the, and has been advertising the sale of it's sister station to anyone who has the finance to buy it. Golly Galagher has been appointed to look after Nova for the. Good luck and best wishes for the future to all of those friendly faces over at Capital Radio, who have sadly left for pastures new. I'm sure that our paths will cross again somewhere. In the rumours department, the next few weeks look very interesting, it is swap round time for various people at Capital, Radio One, and Radio Two, more info next time around. Good luck to Radio One man Anthony Pug, who departs Radio One, and heads towards another BBC building. Good luck also to Chris Vezay, who takes over programming of the David Hamilton Show. Over at LBC, Peter Murray has decided to quit his late night phone in show, no new plans for Pete yet, or indeed no announcement of his replacement. Although Queen have not been doing too much during the last couple of months, the individual members of the band have been busy on projects. Roger Taylor has been producing records, and has been very successful at it too. He recently produced Jimmy Nail, and now has the new Feargal Sharkey single in the charts too. John Deacon has recently opened his own recording studio. Whilst passing some office at EMI recently, I heard the new single from would you believe, Kate Bush... and yes it is totally wonderful. Look out also for a band from Pariophone called The Pet Shop Boys. Best wishes to my pal Tilly Rutherford over at PRT, I hope the leg gets better soon mate, and that you are back at your desk as soon as possible. New albums in the shops here in London from Animotion, Jermaine Stewart, Whitney Houston, and a compilation of the sadly defunct Orange Juice. You can also pick up the debut album from Marilyn. If you are into heavy rock, Saxon have their new album out, and likewise if your taste is not heavy rock, you can get the debut album from the Untouchables. Finally a couple of funny stories for you, Radio One dj Dave Lee Travis shaved his beard off after twenty two years. The hairy monster as he has always been known, appeared on TV -AM for the first time without it recently. Noel Edmunds found himself without any water or electricity recently at his house after some chaps digging for historical remains in his garden dug through to water pipes and then the electricity cables. Enough of this stuff now, I'm going out for some lunch. MILANO CALLING by Lidia Bonguardo Italy is finally starting to feel the wave of the mega concerts hitting Europe this summer. On Friday 21/6 The Boss played for people at the San Siro Stadium in Italy. His only concert in Italy brought people from all over the Penninsula. Tickets were sold out in 4/5 days. There's no need for me to tell you how great that evening was. On 26, 27 and 28th of June, Gianni Revere (San Remo) organized in St. Vincent the yearly festival for the 1985 summer song. Tony Esposito with the song 'As To As' won in the 'Big Group' and Lu Colombo was chosen for the 'New Group'. In the 3 evenings 15 foreign acts were guests. Among them were Everything But The Girl, Lotus Eaters, Propaganda, Simply Red, Belouis Some, Amii Stewart and Mike Francis, Paul Young, Go West and lots of others. One of the highlights was Culture Club, but Boy George's 'primadonna' attitude caused some complaints among the Italian artists. In fact questions have arisen on the organization of the festival and the fact that there is always an enormous amount of foreign artists present in these popular Italian shows. More space has been asked to be given to the Italian artists. Lately there have been some major video contracts signed with Italian record companies. EMI Italy has acquired the rights for the distribution of the Picture Music International catalogue in Italy. Video cassettes include artists such as David Bowie and Phil Collins. EMI Italy also distributes the Virgin video catalogue. CGD Video Suono has made a deal with Chrysalis. 5 video masters will be duplicated and distributed in Italy by CGD. The artists are Spandau Ballet, Ultravox, 2 videos of Blondie and 1 of Jethro Tull. Two new Italian LP's to come out on the market soon. One is Edoardo Bennato with 'Kaiwanna' (don't ask me what it means) and the other is of the Roman singer Antonello Venditti '100 Citta' (one hundred cities). Congratulations go out to Claudio Baglioni, after 2 weeks out on the streets, his LP's 'La Vita E Adesso' entered the Italian charts directly at number one, and I'm sure it will stay there for some time. Hardly any new or significant entries, and in the first half of the European Top 100 there are even none. Of the new entries of the second half, only 1 has an important position: Men At Work's Two Hearts (new at 50 and charted in Germany, Belgium and Denmark). Further new entries for Level 42 (71), the soundtrack A View To A Kill (77) and the Nebraska album of Bruce at 95. The fastest mover of this week is Bob Dylan, due to strong sales in the, Germany, Italy and Holland the album moves in its third week to 15 (from 25). Sting continues to be one of Europe's best played albums and indirecly Sting also exerts some influence on the other good played album in Europe: Dire Straits. The release of Money For Nothing as the second single of Dire Straits this year makes the album again an airplay favourite on Euro-Radio and it is this same Sting who has co -written the above mentioned single and who is also audible on backing vocals. The 'Mother of Punk', Nina Hagen, brings the audiences in Switzerland Germany and Denmark 'In Extase', her albums jumps to 47. She is closely followed by the soundtrack Der Forme! Eins Film, the soundtrack from the movie based on the popular weekly German TV program of the same name. Notwithstanding the quiet release schedules of most companies there are still some albums left to help you through the summer. AC/DC release their first album in two years entitled Fly On The Wall and thanks to standout tracks like Playing With Girls and Danger (the new single for Europe) this album will undoubtedly get a warm reception in Europe. DINGO!! Bingo- I knew there weren't too many people around in other countries who've heard about that band, and a shame it is too. They've released two real great albums, and wonderful singles. In their homecountry they sell more albums than the BEATLES ever did. Unfortunately up until now, all their material is sung in Finnish, which obviously makes things a bit more tounge- twisting to pronounce for non Finns. Anyway, try to get hold of their new album, and here it comes entitled Kerjalaisten Valtakunta. (Ok, whaddayawant, I can't help it!) I love their single called Levoton Tuhkimo, which in translation means Restless Cinderella. Honestly, cut the jokes, this band is superb. Soon there will be material coming out sung in English, if everything goes as planned. And THEN, we have a new supergroup, but remember who tipped you off. Their lyrics are certainly not done by Polly The Parrot, but meaningful. This particular song has such an emotional feeling to it; a wonderful subtle guitarsolo with the right close harmony vocals. No need to be shy boys! This young & goodlooking band from Birmingham should come far with the right back-up & Pushl Ratt - Invasion Of Your Privacy- Atlantic Yes, this is the latest Ratt album, produced by Beau Hill. Starting off with You're In Love, which is not the typical love ballad, quite the contrary. Like all the songs, they are up -tempo, a bit chaotic and with some real flamboyant guitar playing. This band is doing extremly well in the States (and deserved I). Hello Europe, are you with us? These boys are great, real Rockers! Lay It Down 'coz it's Ratt & Roll!! Dingo - Kerjalaisten Valtakunta- Kraelp Bingo -Dingo- emerging from Finland. This is their second album & the best sold rock Lp in Finland, ever! It's impossible to say any sensible word about the lyrics, 'coz all their selfwritten songs are sung in Finnish. What we can say though, is that this band is unique, a class in it self. The style could best be described as a Rock/New Wave/Punk & Folk mixture. In the meantime it was nice to see Swedish Bjom Skifs as a new video ad on MTV with his RCA single The Arbiter (from the Chess album) * Limelight videos is making a big number of important clips. They have just finished the MADONNA video (Over And Over) while they still have a lot of Madonna footage left. Steve Barron has also done the DIRE STRAITS singles as well as the refreshing single from the Norwegain band A -HA (Take On Me). The video utilized special rotoscope animation effects, which apparently have taken two months work! * And yes, we love the Bryan Ferry video of Slave To Love and give full credit to director Mondino for the beautiful shots * How many video recorders will be in operation on July 13th to record the Live Aid broadcast? * One of the oldest established video companies KEEFCO is changing drastically. Both original partners John Weaverand Keith MacMillan are parting. John starts his own production company called John Weaver Productions in Los Angeles, MacMillan will stay in London and operate Keeto from there. 22 EUROTIPSHEET EXPANSION AND NEW ADDRESS You have our last issue before our summerbreak in your hands. We will close for two weeks and be back with you the issue of July 29th. In the meantime we have lots of things to do. First of all we are moving to our new, very cosy building in Amsterdam, very near the Leidseplein, the famous nightclub area of Amsterdam. Our new premises are also opposite the Paradiso rockclub and so you can imagine it will sometimes very hard to keep the editorial team in the office after 10 PM! WILLIE GOES CREEDENCE Bill Wyman celebrated the release of his Willie & The Poor Boys video on June 6th with a glamorous star studded galapremiere in London's Video Cafe. Wyman and musical friends like Andy Fairweather Low, Mickey Gee, Geraint Watkins, Charlie Watts, Kenney Jones, Paul Rodgers, Chris Rea, Jimmy Page and Ray Cooper recently collaborated on an album of Fifties and Sixties Rock 'n Roll songs under the monicker of Willie & The Poor Boys (named after the Creedence Ip). Wyman's goal with this project is to raise money for research into Multiple Sclerosis, the debilitating disease Ronnie Lane suffers from, and to make a new generation aware of the music which inspired him and his contemporaries at the start of their careers.
