NEWS CONTINUED TODD RUNDGREN released a new album Utopia * THE PASSION PUPPETS have finally finished recording their debut 1p which you will have a chance to hear at the end of May, when it will be released in the and US (via MCA) simulataneously. Their third Stiff single, produced by PETE WALSH, entitled Beyond The Pale is due to be released on April 24th. THE PASSION PUPPETS support PSYCHEDELIC FURS on their tour, starting 3rd of May until 29th May * As announced in last weeks issue TINA TURNER has recorded a song written by MARK KNOPFLER of DIRE STRAITS. The track Perfect Dancer features HALL LINDES, JOHN ILLSLEY, ALAN CLARK and TERRY WILLIAMS, all of DIRE STRAITS, and in fact ALAN & HAL have been invited to tour with the Lady on her American supporting tour to LIONEL "HELLO" * BIG COUNTRY, touring USA, Japan and Down Under, coming up to appear at Pinkpopfestival June 11th * STEVE LEVINE appeared on Saturday Superstore (BBC TV) two weeks ago and announed a competition for children who write a musical jingle for use on television (hard to believe he's run out of ideas!!!) Me and my companion in crime; Freddy the Flying Dutchman (that's his battlename), went to see the Simple Minds- concert in Milan. I must say, I never saw something incredibly good like this. (Maybe I didn't see enough concerts!) But Freddy, who's 'older' than me, told me it's been years something like this has happened in Italy. Everybody was shouting and dancing, it wasn't held in disco, but a circustent, so it was amazing! And now, we both do think, considering the fact that Dundee Footballteam deveated Rome, and the Simple Minds- did such a great performance, it's quite obvious why the Scots are so popular in Italy! It all happened after they saw the video that accompanies the single. So after all, it is always a visual thing! * A re- release comes from J.J. CALE with the single Cocaine/Money Talks, drawn from the album Special Edition due to be released end of April * BERLIN starts an American tour on April 24th - May 28th in order to promote their album Love Life with the outstanding track No More Words which was produced by GIORGIO MORODER. It is one of the rare European happenings meeting widespread interest from the inhabitants of almost all countries, (who said music doesn't bring people together?). Many millions watch it on television including citizens of a good number of countries which normally are not so interested in "Western Culture". Each year a few thousand delegates, artists, radio and television producers and press people are gathering somewhere in Europe in honour of European artists and songwriters and one hears the old question: "is this years quality lower or higher than last years?" We welcome all these people, pouring in to the (much too) small Dutchy of Luxembourg for the 1984 Eurovision Song Contest and good luck to RTL for the organisation of the event. Of course there can only be one winner but most years there are 2 or 3 international hit records coming out of this festival, and most entries have already scored in their own market so we may say that there are no real losers in Luxembourg. Apart from its normal distribution to 1700 top radio and television personalities around Europe as well as another 3500 Industry people all over the world, EUROTIPSHEET has a special Eurovision distribution in Luxembourg. ABOUT THE CHARTS For those that haven't yet seen an earlier EUROTIPSHEET, the European Top 100 singles and albums are based on sales charts. We use 26 charts from 16 countries for the singles chart {For some countries, where not one chart is dominant we use various charts in a combination). Please ask for details if you so desire. We use 20 charts for the Top 100 Albums coming from 15 countries. Positions get points which in turn are multiplied by a factor determined through the latest known sales percentage of total singles (or album) sales which that country holds in relation to the rest of Europe. Full explanations appeared in the earlier issues and are of course available on request. The Spinners - Crossfire - Atlantic The Spinners, immortal through hits like It's A Shame, Working My Way Back To You, Cupid (just to name a few...) found a new producer, Leon Sylvers III (the Solar architect) which resulted in a new album (already their 14th) consisting of a good combination between funky stuff and sultry ballads. Right Or Wrong is a good single, but Two Of A Kind is really a smash! Very well suited for disco's and full of tension with a great hook. Tony Carey - Some Tough City - MCA After being with Rainbow for 2 years, running a studio in Frankfurt and producing different German top acts, Tony delivers his second solo album which definately breathes the air of living in a big city like L.A. and trying to deal with it. A strong mainstream album with a highlight in the single It's A Fine, Fine Day. Atthough it breathes summerair, it's emotionally sung, without being sticky, somewhere around the area of Bruce Springsteen, John Conger & Tom Petty, A perfect combination of west coast rock/ballad/ hardrock influence and sad agressive interpretation.
