LONDON CALLING by Howard Marks Well, after fighting off hurricanes in Florida, and two hour delays at Philadelphia airport, I finally came back to town to be told by the editor that I must come up with a theme for the New Music Seminar in New York. Well after slaving away for hours on end I thought it would be best to go over some old ground for the folks who will be at the seminar, who may not have had the chance to read the column before. Also to update the regular reader (thank you mum) on what is currently happening in 10 London. Firstly for the folks at the seminar, some good new bands to look out for especially if you are a program director or jock, or maybe an A&R man looking to pick up new product. Do listen to the fine debut album from Belouis Some, he's signed to Parlophone in the, and in fact all over the world. The act is superb live, and it is only a matter of time before it happens. Look out also for Chakk signed to MCA, and about to release some product soon. A new name signed to Magnet Records, is a band called... Duck You Sucker. Look out for product from them soon. 400 Blows, another new outfit signed to Illuminated Records could do quite well in the US dance charts. Another two acts signed to Parlophone are The Armoury Show, which features ex -members of The Skids, and also Spelt Like This. The soul movement is happening very big here with acts such as Jaki Graham, Loose Ends, Cool Notes, Five Star and Total ContraSt, all crossing over to National Top 40, and in the case of Five Star, and Loose Ends, starting to make waves in the USA too. Cool Notes have just signed to Arista for The States, and are about to deliver their debut album in the. Other soul acts who are doing amazingly well in the national charts are Billy Ocean and Mai Tai. Soul music is the big thing in the at the moment, and dj's such as Tony Blackburn at BBC Radio London are really supporting the music. Talking about Tony, his wonderful 'Soul Night Out' has just returned, with lots of guest starts coming along to promote their new releases. Heavy rock seems to have gone more commercial, and much more melodic with acts such as Gary Moore and Dio making very high chart entries. Big name acts continue to pour into London for sell out concerts: Names such as Diana FlOss, Commodores, Womack & Womack, George Benson and Bobby Womack to name just a few. O.K., now for some current news of what is happening in London. Big chances at BBC Radio One. Mark Page will lose his friday afternoon show to new boy Paul Jordan, Paul will get a sunday morning show too. Also Bruno Brooks now gets a five day week show, and 'Roundtable' is being rested. Tommy Vance will lose his thursday night 'Into The Music' show to Whistle Test co -presenter Andy Kershaw. Grahame Bannerman loses his saturday night show, and BBC Radio London Breakfast show presenter Anne Marie Grey becomes a member of the Radio One team. Over at Invincta Radio former Capital Radio interviewer Tony Daughty has joined the team of dj's, and the station after having a few financial problems, seems to be doing very well now. New releases in the shops worth checking out from The Smiths, Level 42, Five Star, Joan Armatrading, Hugh Cornwell, The Cure, and a new name to watch out for Balaam & The Angel, they look all set to do big things in the near future. Look out also for a new single from Canadian act Gino Soccio. The single has already been a hit in the dance charts of Canada, Holland and Italy, and has recently been a big selling import here in London. Hazel Dean has signed to EMI, and her new record is a cover of a minor hit earlier this year for Kerry Delius. The song is called They Say It's Gonna Rain. I think this will be big. Duran Duran's Andy Taylor can be heard one new single from John Adams. You may remember a great little outfit called Private Lives, well John used to be with them. Meanwhile Simon LeBon is preparing his project which is to be called Arcadia. Gary Crowley over at Capital Radio recently did a live phone in from Canada with George Michael, and Boy George did a revealing interview with 'The Mail On Sunday'. Go West are doing some stuff with Rambo himself none other than Silvester Stallone. I hope they all get on okay, otherwise they could end up as bait for Rambo Ill. Allright folks, that's it for another two weeks, when we will have more of the same GERMANY SWF - Baden Baden - Rainer Cabanis- head of music Records of the week: Shakatak- City Rhythm; David Cassidy- She Knows All About Boys. GERMANY CALLING The wellknown Berlin Funk Exhibition proved again very tiredsome for industry experts as it is always hard to do real business at a combined consumer and industry fair. German productions and especially the socalled 'schlager' are getting more and more share on German radio. Media Control reports that in the radio hitparades of the various top stations 93 German productions were represented from April till June (75 last year). Radio Bremen started its third channel, giving most attention to youth music. In the meantime Berlin's RIAS is changing formats September 30th onwards with more recognisable target groups for its two full programmes. CBS continues to push hard on its already successful German artists roster. After the renewed Nena success, much is expected from the new single and album by beautiful rockstars Jennifer Rush and Cosa Rosa. Although the traditional German version recordings of international hits are much less popular than a few years ago, Phonogram act Leinemann has a major hit with the title Mein Tuut Tuut (Can you figure out what the original is?). New albums are released by national megastars Peter Maffay (an album on Teldec, the video with WEAL former Eurovision Song contest winner Nicole (Jupiter) and Howard Carpendale (EMI). A new Polygram structure was announced by chairman Richard Busch. The marketing and sales activities of the 3 companies DGG, Metronome and Phonogram will be placed in a central unit and DGG is called Polydor from now on. Louis Spillman remains as Managing Director for Phonogram. Heino Wirth takes the helm at Polydor (ex Metronome), while his former position is taken by Klaus Ebert. Udo Lindenberg is in the middle of a major tour with his Panikorchester in conjunction with a new LP. Diana Ross, Cliff Richard, Commodores, The Damned, Working Week and Mink De Ville are amongst the most important international stars touring Germany this month. PARIS CALLING EXPLOSION FOR FRENCH MEDIA President Francois Mifferand wants to keep to his promise, 4 years ago, of deregulating the French airwaves. After more than 35 years of state monopoly over French TV, there will be a new national all entertainment tv channel early 1986 almost totally filled with music programs. Bidding for the channel are a consortium including radio's Europe Un and NRJ, but also Club Mediterranee, Virgin Records and Hachette Filipacchi as well as a possible partnership between RTL and RMC. Another new network will be distributed on the TDF satelite and will carry general - interest programming. These to be added to the existing 3 national C channels (71, Antenna 2 and FR3) and pay-tv Canal Plus. Radio -wise the amount of new FM radio stations during the I 4 years has been enormous and still is in constant turmoil. Latest ccess stones come most definitely from NRJ, the 'franchising' chain -aded by Jean -Paul Baudecroux, Max Guazzini and Jean-Pierre d'ami o Not only is their main station NRJ Paris by far the biggest in e capi al, but the chain now includes more than 30 different stations all around France and has become a major force in promoting national and international records. Latest rumours are that NRJ is investigating franchising possibilities across the borders in Belgium and Switzerland. RADIO RATINGS The 1psos/BVA ratings also confirmed the NRJ dominance, especially amongst the years age group. More than 40% of youth around Paris (the so-called Ile de France) report NRJ their favourite station (RTL 20,9 Europe 15,7 France Inter 14). In total the RLP stations (Local Radio!) are gaining points. Most popular Local radio's outside Paris include Paradis in Brest, Radio Star Mulhouse, RVS Rouen, Ille in Rennes, Vibration Orleans and the NRJ franchised units in Strassbourg, Le Havre and Montpellier. The runner-up FM position for Paris could now be claimed by RFM, the station headed by Patrick Meijer and with Media celebrity Jean - Bernard Hebey in the Program Directors seat. RFM may be another candidate to broaden its scope via satellite soon. In spite of pessimistic expectations non-deejay station HIT FM seems to be doing fine in Paris. Back at AM, France's no 1 station FITL is going through management changes, as long-time directeur general Rogier Kreicher retires. The station will now be headed by Philippe Labro, who headed the entertainment department. His job has now been taken by Philippe Micouleau. Kreicher will continue to be special adviser. Ex-WEA Italia M.D. Luigi Calabrese started his new directorship at Polydor France under Polygram head Alain Levy. Independent labels Dreyfus and Motors are now distributed by Polygram. Carrere and. HOLLAND CALLING With the Dutch government deciding on a new broadcast legislation in the near future, there is already a major battle with the ministry over the new status of Veronica. The Dutch divide their available radio and television airtime in a complex way. The many different broadcast organisations (various still with a religious or political background) fight for more so- called 'members' in a semi -commercial way. Each year numbers are counted and so the stations have an A, B or C status. Former pirate (the ship on the Northsea) Radio Veronica claimed A status already a year ago, but the Dutch government refused to grant them their extra airtime on grounds of dubious numbers. It looks like the station has now won the battle through various court hearings and is an A station. Veronica is particularly very popular with the young audience and will be adding more music programs, pleasing the Dutch recording industry. (While at NMS congratulate Program Directors Lex Harding and Rob de Boer). Further legislation is expected to put levy on blank audio and videotapes before the year is over. The industry's Gala Of The Year will be held and broadcast October 11th with Alison Moyet, Bryan Ferry and Jermaine Jackson amongst the international guests. Golden Earring members Barry Hay & George Kooymans launched their Ring Records, a new independent with new pop and rock talent to be distributed by Ariola. The new RCA/Ariola group will be headed in Holland by Martin Kleinjan, who was already at the helm of Ariola. We have been playing Tarzan Boy since last January (see our report in Eurotipsheet no. 5)... Bon giorno! Talk of the Milano town is the persistent rumours that Media mogull Silvio Berlusconi, who already owns various TV and Radio stations in Italy, is actively bidding for stocks from French and Spanish television stations as well as satellite connections. Welcome at the NMS. Hope you all have interesting meetings. And while there don't forget to say hi to one of our country's media legends, Claudio Cecchetto, owner and producer of the most popular Italian videoshow Deejay Television, which broadcasts every evening on lab Uno, our first channel. Claudio will also be on your international Video Programming panel, together with his executive assistant Kay (doing the translations). Talking about festivals you probably know our country is very active with all kind of festivals. Two deserving your attention this week are the famous Riva Del Garda TV presentation on RAI presented once again by omnipresent Gianni Ravera September It includes many national and international stars. The other one SIM, the Milan HiFi exhibition just closed its doors after enjoying record breaking attendance. No less than 405 different companies displayed over 1000 trademarks during this 19th SIM edition. An eye-catching talent scouting competition was held under the banner Viva e Jiovani, a 4 -day live presentation of popgroups attracting massive audience reaction in the exhibition hall with the finalists going soon to have a grarde finale during an evening in the famous Manzoni theatre, which will be covered by Canale 5 television, The winner will start a recording career on the '5' label. Nationwide TV popshow Discoring has moved its production from Rome to Milano and restarts its weekly run early October. The show will again be hosted by popular trio Anna Petinelli, Mauro Micheloni and Sergio Mantinelli. Milan is easier to reach for the heavy scheduled international rock stars. Video Music, our 24 -hours clip station introduces various new programs including a Eurochart, chart and a USA Hot 100, presented by English Nino Gambacini (We believe he's known as Paul in his home country). Major concert news include the Euro appearance (only Italy!) by James Taylor, who plays Verona, Genua, Milan, Torino, Florence and Rome during September. We also welcome Style Council. The payment for video clip broadcasting is becoming a major problem now that the Italian record companies are gathering together to tackle the issue. With most people returning from summer holidays, the most popular Italian artists emerging from this sunny period are Righeira and Sandy Martin as well as Fiorella Mannoia, Alice and Franco Battiaco. The additions are the two rock - bands Dio and Marillion throwing Sade and Supertramp out of the Top 10. Both Marillion and Dio have strong moving albums at the moment and are steady sellers in eight European countries. Although Marillion is not a real hard rock band they are however regarded by many as belonging to this genre. Apart from this act nine hard other rock albums can be found in the Top 100 Albums. Thcfr real exponents of the hard rock school include Scorpions, Saga, AC/DC, Gary Moore (new entry at 57 this week), ZZ Top, Motley Crue, Saxon (new entry at 93 this week) and the earlier mentioned Dio. (we are dismissing rock acts like Bryan Adams, Billy Idol and Rick Springfield). Although Neil Young and German singer Peter Maffay have nothing particular in common, they have the highest NO 37 - SEPTEMBER 16TH 1985 page debuting albums in the European Top 100. Peter's Sonne In Der Nacht album (Teldec) came straight in at no. 3 in Germany this week and the album is such a hot sales item that it is a serious competitor for the no.1 in Germany (Madonna, Like A Virgin). Neil Young's latest country album for Geffen, Old Ways, comes in at 46 due to good positions in the, Holland and Sweden. Other significant entries for German singer Roger Whittaker, Gary Moore and UB40. A very likely contender for entry next week in the Top 100 is Hall & Oates' live album Live At The Apollo. Side 1 is a tribute to the great Motown era with a stand -out medley The Way You Do The Things You Do and My Girl featuring ex - Temptation vocalists David Ruffin and Eddie Kendrick. Side 2 is a splendid compilation of their recent hits of which the highlight is the Daryl Hall penned Everytime You Go Away, the former hit for Paul Young. Speaking about Motown we finally welcome the long awaited new Stevie Wonder album In Square Circle. EURORADIO ALBUM SMASHES This week's most played albums on European Radio. TURNTABLE TIPS Loverboy - Lovin' Every Minute Of It- CBS The 4th album for this Canadian rock outfit contains an attractive collection of hook- laden powerpop songs. Produced by Tom Allom (Krokus, Priest, Leopard) the group is definitely at it's best in medium -tempo rock songs where the excellent vocals of Mike Reno and the daming guitarworks of Paul Dean make a good combination with the rhythmsection. The titletrack is written by Mutt Lange and it is already getting masses of tips from Germany; other stand -out tracks are; the anthem Steal The Thunder and the two rough -edged ballads Destination Heartbreak and This Could Be The Night. 20 Vandenberg - Alibi- Atco 3rd Album from one of Hollands Best Rockbands signed with the American label Atco. As expected, they totally deliver the goods. Once In A Lifetime, the current single is getting a deserved strong airplay and How Long is again an emotional heartbuming ballad, with excellent vocals. Not to mention the superb guitarparts on all of the tracks. This album certainly contains some very strong songs in an excellent and transparent production by Stars on 45 maker Jaap Eggermont. Fave tracks: Fighting Against The World, Dressed To Kill and How Long. Tullio De Piscopo - Eastern Passage- Zyx Stop Bajon was for many holiday-makers the summerhit of last year. Not so many however were aware that the artist was Tullio De Piscopo coming from Italy. This allround percussionplayer already worked with renowned musicians like Quincy Jones, Gerry Mulligan, Billy Cobham and Stefan Grappelli. Eastern Passage is a mix of folk songs, disco/ dance, arable elements as well as Southern American influences. The single 'E Ratto 'E Sorde! E? (Money -Money) is a rhythmic rap - song (check the 12" version) and Radio Africa has hiphop influences on a disco/dance basis.

Many of these shows, especially in Germany, France, Italy and Spain take their annual summer break from the end of May untill early September. The record industry is most effected by this in Germany where the only regular national television show (with mostly clips) Formel Eins starts another weekly run now. Although the show has to be run on a tight budget and even with their broadcast divided on different evenings in the various German regions, Formel Eins has become a vital toot in the promotion of singles. Producer Andreas Thiesmeijer shows a run-down of the US and charts (approximately 30 -seconds clip portions), presents the new entries in the German Charts and also national and international tips filmed live in the famous Bavaria Films studio in Munchen. The Pay For Play issue is still a major source of debates within the European Music communities with disagreement presently running high in Italy (see Milano Calling). The International Programming Panel at the 6th New Music Seminar this year includes European TV celebrities like Music Box chairman Charles Levinson, Italo Uno's Claudio Cecchetto, Dutch Veronica's Program Director Lex Harding, Germany's Hans Kruger and is moderated by Eurotipsheet's Theo Roos. The Pay For Play and Censorship issues will give ground for lively discussions as will the differences in programming decisions between the various markets. Billboard presented one of its biggest- ever issues during the American VSDA convention. Some record people may be complaining that the magazine turns more and more to Video (with Jane Fonda on the frontcover) and computer games, but isn't that the idea of music and home entertainment? VIDEO ART With the 'censor' debate making worldwide headlines it is healthy to see that the well respected New York Museum Of Modern Art is running an exhibition entitled Music Video; The Industry And Its Fringes as part of the museum's film department 50th anniversary celebration, It includes a 90- minutes video with segments from The Beatles, Bowie, Jackson, Queen, Yello to The Cars. A must for NMS attendees (running untill Sept 30). Pan -European Satellite music channel Music Box has finally added Germany to its already impressive list of countries, where they are broadcasting. Berlin is the latest city hooked on with 75,000 households now, but with a potential of 180,000 homes before the end of the year. Even with music industry participation at the London Musexpo, to be held mid -October, expected to be cautiously low, it will be interesting to see how well the new IMV, International Music Video Festival, which is held same time same place will do. It is organized on the ruins of last years failing St.Tropez fest and costs 425 pounds per company and 200 per individual. There still is exhibit space available. In the USA more and more clip stations are in financial trouble and the new Pay For Play policy from major record labels (WFA is also announcing a new fee) will add to their ordeal. Pan -Europe's combined satellite effort Olympus will change its name just prior to its October 5 launch date. A Japanes Corporation with the same name threatened to sue and now the chiefs of the European national broadcasting organisations decided to find a new name at their recent conference held in Portugal. Whether they make the projected launch date is also still uncertain. NEW VIDEOS FOR YOUR PROGRAMS Filmed in Australia was the new video for the DIVINYLS new single Pleasure & Pain, rumours have it that the production was bigger than "Ben Hur" DEL AMITRI have completed their clip for the new single Hammering Heart * The Happy Boy single of THE BOLSHOI has an accompannying video available made with a fraction of the usual big budget clips. For those of you attending the NMS to pick up new talent; watch out for Europe this year. The percentage of European productions selling well on both sides of the Atlantic is on the rise) Further proof are the singles of Opus, Harold Faltermeyer, Ivan, Gold, Bad Boys Blue, Modern Talking, Sandra and Mai Tai, ail present in the Top 35 of Europe! A close look at the European Airplay Top 50 this week shows that 2 covers, 4 re- releases and original B-side appear. The charity cover Dancing In the Street is still Europe's best played single (and the difference with the no. 2 is huge). The Sunny & Cher cover / Got You Babe is at 5. Originally appearing as a B-side of Angel Madonna's Groove is currently at 3 (dipping 1 place) and the re-releases include Bonnie Tyler's Holding Out ForA Hero (from the Metropolis soundtrack; new at 37), yet another charity single from The Cars at 47 and even two from Billy Idol; Rebel Yell (picking up a lot of radio play in England) and White Wedding. BUBBLERS Looking at the bubblers under the Airplay Top 50 we even find more re-releases: U2's Sunday Bloody Sunday (re-released in the Benelux), Maria Vidal 's Body Rock, Amil Stuart's double A -sided single Knock On Wood/Light My Fire, Tavares, Heaven Must Be Missing An Angel (in the perfect Ben Liebrand mix currently shooting up the Benelux charts), D- Train's You're The One For Me, Jaki Graham's Heaven knows, Dan Hartman's 1 Can Dream About You and of course Madonna's Holiday. Although the Huey Lewis' single Power of Love is at the moment only charted in the, Holland, Switzerland and Ireland, airplay on this one rose considerably last week and the single is at the moment Europe's second best played single. Stevie Wonder, Jahn Parr, Madness and Princess are among the other records in Europe gaining a lot of airplay during this week. Scritti Politti has the highest entry in the Airplay Top 50 (Perfect Way closely followed by Bonnie Tyler and Aretha Franklin TRIBUTE No doubt that the Hall & Oates single The Way You Do The Things You Do/ My Girl will be a Hot Radio Add next week; this tribute to the old Motown days gets an extra dimension by the assistance of ex- Temptation vocalists David Ruffin and Eddie Kendrick. Further adds next week might include Diana Ross' Eaten Alive with an impressive all- star lineup (written by Gibb brothers and Michael Jackson and with Michael backing the vocals); the long awaited INXS single (This Time produced by legendary Chris Thomas) and Bucks Fizz. While John Parr's Elmo's Fire shoots up the airplay charts (20-38) the Parr/Meatloaf written Magical is Fizz latest and a new entry in the English charts this week (57). The most exciting new independent release comes from the engllsh band The Bolshoi entitled Happy Boy (Situation Two); memorable vocals on a catchy and a steady beat. 3

19 PAN EUROPEAN MARKET 16T--q vac(e--( ON THE FOS Lio In spite of hectic political discussions between the partners of the European community (EEC), the Eighties are slowly but surely turning into the c''rcade of Pan-Euromarket. Evidently there are talks about diminishing the traditional national borders, not only custom - wise, but also in many other areas. The new European money unit, the ECU already had quite an impressive launch and is lastly gaining in importance. Soccer (the European cup) and songfestivals (Eurovision) were amongst the first signs, but the last few years have provided a further break -through to the Pan European idea, with much deeper implications. Especially the changing face of the media; radio, television and press will give the 'Europasation' a lasting meaning. This has become also very clear in the consumers taste for pop and rock music. There is much less difference now between the tastes in Northern, Central and Southern Europe than a few years back. EUROHITS SCORING 1-1 1( --Ec6 1(46 The United Kingdom has always been a major force for new talent and was vital for the innovation of international pop and lately it has even increased its major role on all continents. The A&R experts of the American record labels know that they have to keep their ears wide open for this "British invasion", lately dominating the top of the Billboard charts. In the past, the other European markets were only able to score well from time to time. We all remember the Dutch wave, the Swedish and a little later a German boom. However Continental Europe is now starting to become very established as a major talent source, not in the least inititated by a number of active independents. Especially during the last few months, the European Top 100 bestseller lists, as prepared by European Music Report, are showing more and more Euro crossover records breaking in many countries outside their market of origin. First positions were taken by Italian act Baltimora, charted in no less than 15 of the 17 Euromarkets with Tarzan Boy and Austrian act Opus, with the sing -along track Live is Live. But with the number of continental Euro hits rising every week, it no longer is a 'wave' but a constant factor the international recording industry will have to reckon with. Whether it is Germany's Nena, Modern Talking, Harold Faltermeyer or Alphaville, France's Jean -Jacques Goldman, Jeanne Mas or Rita Mitsouko, Italy's Righeira, Raggio De Luna, Spain's Ivan, Holland's Star Sisters, Mai Tai, Band Of Gold and many others, they all have a Continental European background. Language barriers become less and less of a problem, producers and arrangers are no longer trying to copy their Anglo American heroes and studios are state of the art.. Europe is -on the go! Eurotipsheet is the first Pan -European trade to follow this trend and will keep you updated. PAN EUROMEDIA The European media may seem to be in turmoil, but there is only one direction they are heading for... more stations, less borders, The new phenomena of broadcasting reaching across the national frontiers has not only changed the somewhat old fashioned way of music programming, especially in Central Europe. It has finally given some healthy competition to the often state controlled and dominant stations and certainly gave ground to emotional outcries in the parliaments of many European countries, where politicians are afraid of diminishing control over the media and much smaller advertising revenues, which is often used to finance these media. There does not seem to be a way back. Due to public pressure various gov- emments need to open their airwaves to new radio and television stations, often as a tool to attract voters and to combat the new international satellite and cable programs. Most dramatic is the change in the Benelux countries and France. In Holland based IV satellite programs Sky and Music Box present a major force on the cables of the big cities, Pirate radio stations Laser 558 and Radio Caroline are quite well listened to and the Dutch postal authorities are chasing new local pirate stations nearly every day. With Dutch network Radio Veronica reaching A -status (See Holland Calling), this at least gives some counter balance, as Veronica is a hip music station. In Belgium, a country which due to its geographical position is already receiving a string of Dutch, French, German and Luxembourg stations, the picture is almost identical and Music Box is expected to enter the cable systems very soon. In France the change is even more drastic. The traditionally strong AM stations like RTL, Europe, RMC are challenged by a barrage of new FM stations emerging in all major areas and giving a tremendous boost to international 'pop repertoire. Although this gives ground to a lot of chauvinistic criticism (French culture protectionism), it has also improved the quality and international chances for French produced rock. Latest news is the expected broadening of Television channels (see Paris Calling). Italy and Spain already have a wide spectrum of radio and television channels for a longer period and competition there is very fierce. Especially in Italy it presents a complex picture with national RAI competing, but also joining forces with the 4

20 independent channels. The most. conservative moves take place in the United Kingdom and Germany, but the signs of change are also evident in these major countries. In the the independent radio stations are. gaining importance, although BBC Radio 1 still is a vital tool in the break through of new product. There are more music television programs than before, although still relatively few showing videos (due to the musicians union protests?). Cable is not yet a major factor. Pirate radio is, and the British government is trying to stop them in every possible way, including cutting the sea routes for the supply ships of Laser and Caroline. Satelite is clearly coming, but not yet important. Germany is opening its cable systems for new radio ventures, like Radio Gong and Radio C in Munchen, but also to foreign owned TV stations like Music Box. These satellite programs are also making strong impact in Scandinavia and Switzerland. EURO INDIES Independent labels have always been influentual in England and their huge quantity made it difficult for the retailers to keep track of new releases. This improved a bit with the birth of some Independent Label Organisations like the ILA (an initiative later followed in the States). However many top acts started with an independent and some of these smaller labels, like Beggars Banquet, ZTT, Mute, Rough Trade and Jive/Zomba became wellknown names. Still today there seems to be a new label launched every day in the and the majors are quick to pick them for joint ventures, pressing and distribution. The last years have been good for hits on Fiction, Dep Int, 10, Supreme, Statik, Some Bizarre, Towerbell, just to name a few. But since a more recent period, the other European countries are becoming much more active with independent labels popping up all over the continent. Partly due to lesser chances with a smaller number of major record companies around, new creative talent is in constant surge of financiers and join smaller units or start one on their own. Many of the new winning Euro crossover artists emerged from small, sometimes obscure corners. They break first in their own country, then join the Pan -European hit market and aim for the world. The G.A.S. countries (Germany, Switzerland, Austria) are particularly creative with labels such as Hansa (Modern Talking), OK (Opus), Zyx (Scotch). Italy has always had a string of successful combined production/ label units. Baby Records, Strum, Italo Heat, DDD and Discotto are just the recent winners. In Holland CNR has a big hitname. Boni and Ramshom score with dance orientated product. Carrere still is the major French talent exporter (with even an active office in the ), but during the last few years others have also discovered the possibilities beyond national borders, such as Flarenash and Vogue. For more recent independent hit releases from Europe, please check our recommendation list in this section. Eurotipsheet will spotlight these new talents from week to week. Since 15 months EUROTIPSHEET covers the Pan-Furopean market. It presents the tips of the 400 leading radio and television experts from the 18 most importnt European countries. It also compiles and presents the EUROPEAN TOP 100 charts (singles and albums) based on sales, as well as the European AIRPLAY TOP 50. This is a compilation of the most played singles in Europe in the week the magazine arrives on your desk!!. EUROTIPSHEET is planning major expansions and will present much more European news. Watch out for announcements soon! CHART METHODOLOGY If you want to know more about the way our charts are compiled, contact us anytime! The basic systems are; EUROPEAN TOP 100 (Singles - Albums): The charts are based on sales information from the 16 major markets of Europe(*). From those countries were one chart is recognised by the music industry as the "official" hitparade, the data of that chart Is used. For this we are (gratefully) assisted by wellknown research companies like the IFPI, BPI, Gallup, Deutsche Phonoverband, Nielsen. There are also a number of countries, which do not have one organised hitparade. From these markets we use various data, such as bestseller lists of the major rackjobbers and wholesale firms, a 'combination' of different national hitparades and direct sales information. Each final chart position for every country then receives, relevant to its position, an equal points rating, which in turn is multiplied by a factor. This factor is determined through the latest known sales percentage of total sales, which that country holds in relation to the rest of Europe. Different percentages and data is used for singles and albums. The sales percentages are provided by the official industry organisations IFFil and BPI and are updated each quarter. EUROPEAN AIRPLAY TOP 50: This charts is basically compiled through 2 sorts of data. First the play - lists of the major European radio stations are used. These include all the leading stations in Europe. Each station has its own weighting factor. The data is then completed with the tips of the 400 correspondents, which are received each week by our team. Note that not all tips are printed every week in Eurotipsheet, but they are al! used for the compilation of the TOP 50. This results in a European playlist, which includes the new additions and upcoming powerplays and therefore this is a HOT NEW EURO PLAYLIST!.

22 o M UNITED KINGDOM Bowie & Jagger still have best played single, followed by Stevie Wonder and Bonnie Tyler. Both Thompson Twins, Red Box (Lean On Me), Bryan Ferry (Don't Stop The Dance), Mai Tai, Lloyd Cole, Princess and Billy Idol (yet another re-release: Rebel Yell) have gained much airplay over the last week, Saleswise, two singles jump in the Top 5; Bonnie Tyler (2-10) and Stevie Wonder (5-20 in it 2nd week!) Other strong moves outside the Top 10 for Amii Stewart (12-16), Marillion (13-23), Huey Lewis (19-31) and Maria Vidal (26-38). Highest entry for UItravox member Midge Ure (If I Was straight at 29), followed by entries of Cliff Richard (33), Lloyd Cole (36), Billy Idol (38) and Five Star (44; Los Take Oven. GERMANY While Tina and Bowie & Jagger still are Germany's best played singles, local band Bleed< Foeoess is heading to the top with their Frankreich, Frankreich. The airplay on John Parr's St, Elmo's Fire rose considerably and with the single in its 2nd week at 1 in the US, it is already Germany's 4th best played single. Bubbling under: veteran rocker Udo Lindenberg with his follow-up to Germans entitled Moskau, Princess and local artists Peter Maffay and Hanne Haller. Germany has a new no. 1, Sandra jumps up one notch (yet another Europroduction) and puts Tina back to no, 2. Bowie & Jagger have the fastest moving single, from 29 straight up to 6! Martinelli's single Cenerentola (on EMI) is the other mover in the Top 10 (9-12). And Kate Bush (13-22), Lee Majors (The bionic 6 million dollar man) (15-26), Roger Wittaker (29-44), Howard Carpendale (33-73). and Bryan Adams (Heaven 35-51) continue their way to the top. The indict label Rush Records (see also issue 34) have the highest entry this week (26) with the 12" version of A View To A Kill by a band called DJ's Factory AUSTRIA The most striking change in the Austrian Top 10 is the new entry of the Austrian three-piece band STS, which stands for Steinbecker, Timischl and Schiffkowitz, the 3 members of the band. Their last single Fuerstenfeld sold copies in Austria alone and was popular in Germany as well. Their new single lrgendwan Bleib I Dann Dort (Amadeo/Polygrarn) comes straigt in at no.. 4 and surpasses the other popular Austrian artist Sigi Maron (Geh No Net Full- Ariola). Two Euro-productions top the charts, German threesome Bad Boys Blue at 1 followed by Baltimore at 2. The move of Kim Carnes is very notable; Crazy In The Night moves from 26 to 8 only in its. 2nd week and this makes Austria the only Eurocountry charting this American singer. The Greek singer Sandra is 2nd best entry, her Michael Cretu-produced Maria Magdalena comes in at 11 and other major entries include Madonna (Groove) and Martinelli (Cenerentola). SWITZERLAND Almost half of the Swiss Top 30, consist of Europroducts with Sandra, Bad Boys Blue, Round One, Baltimore, Falco and Phil Carmen in the Top 10 (in order of importance). Other Europroductions include the Rumanian born, but working in Germany Michael Cretu (Samurai new at 10), local production Matterhorn Project with the synthy yodel song Ye -Lobo- Diuh (11-21), Italian singer Den Harrow with Future Brain, Two Of Us, Opus (Flying High) and Italian band Righeira with their L'Estate Sta Finendo. In the top 10 only 3 artists from international origin can be found (Tina at 1, Madonna at 2 and Denise LaSalle at 8). Bubbling under and very likely to come in next week: Bowie & Jagger, Thompson Twins, Mai Tai, Miami Sound Machine (Conga) and the Italian Toto Cotugno (MI Piacerebbe). FRANCE This week Austrian band Opus is dethroned by the definite Eurocross-over hit of the year, Tarzan Boy, although the difference with French group Gold (Plus PreS Des Etoiles) is very small. The fastest moving French production is Arinia's Jean -Jacques Lafon with Le Geant De Papier, from 28 to 14 this week. The hegemony of Jean - Jacques Goldman is this week broken on AM level by local Gold. A strong contender for next week's best played single on AM is Johnny Halliday's latest Rock 'n' Roll Attitude. Stevie Wonder is also added to a major part of the AM stations and is already the 8th best played single. On FM level Jean -Jacques Goldman is surpassed by Madonna's Groove and although Tina last week was no. 20 she now is already 3rd best played on FM. HOLLAND Re-releases seem to be the fashion of 1985, U2's Sunday, Bloody Sunday is picking up strong radio responses in Holland again and is already record of the week on Veronica and KRO. Further to that Holland is first in charting Rick James' Glow, one of this weeks fastest movers. Other runners up include Bowie & Jagger, Tavares, local comedian Andre van Duin with Fen Boutje, Sting's Seventh Wave and Belgian production Zinno. Best played single at the moment is Schaduw (Shadow) from the popular Dutch band Frank Boeyen Groep. Nearly all Dutch stations have added Huey Lewis' new single and Power Of Love is 3rd best single this week. Other strong increase in airplay for U2, local Gerard Joling and Princess. As predicted jest week, Vanden - berg's third album for Atco Alibi is Hollands highest entry in the Album Top 75 (new at 33; see also review). Other album entries for Dutch crooner Lee Towers (Ariola), Imagination (Best Of album), UB 40 and Anne Clark (Pressure Points- Virgin); The Cure and Neil Young have best moving albums (15-30);(23-32). BELGIUM The official Belgian Haparade (as supplied by Sabam/Sibesa) bears a close resemblance to the Dutch one. with Holland setting the trends and Belgium as a loyal follower. It is easier for Dutch production to chart in Belgium than the other way. around: Benny Neyman, Andre Hazes, George Baker and Georgie Davis (the Stevie Wonder sound -a- like on ONR) are all charted in Belgium. Of the three most popular Belgian productions (Zinno with What's Your Name; Franky Paolo with Due Pasa Manana and 2 Belgen with Lena), only Zinno crosses over to Holland. Tarzan Boy still tops the charts followed by Groove and Another Hero. Fast moving singles for Eurythmics and UB 40. NORWAY The Norwegian duo The Monroes are causing gate sortie excitement in the Norwegian charts this week. Their single Cheerio, is new at no, 1 and their Ip Face Another Day already reached advance sales of copies. The other successful Norwegian group A - Continued on page JP. 9 7

Straits are no. 1, Eurythmics 2, Springsteen 4 and Bryan Adams at 5. The Norwegian band -aid (Norway For Africa: Sammen, For Lievet) is also very popular Up North and the single drawn of this charity album even gets medium coverage on Sky Trax. SWEDEN Hard rock always finds easy acceptance in the Northern European countries. The fastest mover in the Swedish 'Topplistan' chart is Dio's latest Ip Sacred Heart (6-15). While Dio is about to come in, the top 5 remains the same: Straits 1, Eurythmics 2, Bruce 3, Saga at 4 and Madonna at 5. On the singles front Sandra tops the charts in it's second week followed by Eurythmics, Madonna and Battimora. The dancing for Live -Aid duet is this week's highest entry in the Swedish charts. FINLAND The Finnish market only publishes a monthly chart; therefore things remain the same as stated in our issue 35: best selling single in Finland is from the local band Eppu Normaali and apart from the international acts like Modern Talking, Duran Duran, Madonna and Springsteen other products doing well include Opus, Hardcastle and Finnish group Peopeda. ITALY With most of the holiday-makers returning (after nearly a month of complete silence) things are gradually coming back to normal, Most of the Italian stations have added Madonna's Groove over the last few weeks, the single is fastest moving international product. Although Duran Duran, Hardcastle, Simple Minds and USA For Africa still top the Italian sales charts Madonna is close by and will undoubtedly move into Top 5 next week. Of the Italian Top 10 only two positions are taken by local productions, Righeira's Eurohit L'Estate Ste Finendo (Strum/00D) (when will it finally cross -over to more than Germany alone?) is currently at 6 followed by the duet between Marcella and Gianni Berta entitled L'Uitima Poesia (CBS). Bubbling under the Top 10 at the moment are Simply Red, Michael Cretu and Tato Cotugno. GREECE Although a real singles market does not exist in Greece, there were some chart toppers, selling vast amounts. A nation wide poll amongst record companies revealed that Opus- Live Is Life and Simple Minds- Don't You were the definite summer favourites this year. Other good sellers include Sandra- Maria Magdalena, Modern Talking- You're My Heart and Michael Cretu- Samurai. The most popular album was Springsteen's Born In The USA (thanks Lefty..). PORTUGAL Ex -PhD singer Jim Diamond is extremely popular in Portugal. Diamond's first single Have Known Better was a hit all over Europe, but his follow-up Remember 1 Love You failed to make much impact with the exception of Portugal where the single is at 3 in it's 10th week. Two Europroductions still on top, Baltimora and Opus. Bryan Adams has two singles charted, Heaven at 8 (from 16) and Somebody at 15 (in it's 14th week). 9
