It provides a foundation of knowledge concerning Chinese art and archaeology and introduces students to a variety of academic perspectives to the study of this subject, especially those developed in English-language scholarship. Students will learn to think critically about the elements of Chinese art and the relationship between art history and Chinese history more broadly conceived. Group discussion and presentation: Starting from Week Three, students will prepare group presentations, reporting and sharing what they have learnt from the readings. Other students will then discuss in groups and propose questions regarding the readings and the presentations. In the process of these discussions, students will learn to think critically and to propose incisive critical questions. Reading: For the purpose of extending students knowledge of art history and archaeology to English scholarship, the reading materials are mostly in English. Students reading and presentation of the articles should pay attention to the articles structures, sources, research methods, and writing strategies. Fieldtrip: The class will visit a selected exhibition and apply what they have learnt from the course in the post-visit discussion. 4

5 Take-home Exam: The take-home exam in Week Twelve will ask you to analyze a given question or a set of materials, developing your analysis and arguments. To prepare for the exam, you should read all the articles assigned to you every week and participate in the class discussions. The exam sheet can be written in Chinese. Assessment Methods in Alignment with Intended Learning Outcomes Student Study Effort Required Attendance 10% Class discussion 20% All students should actively participate in class discussions and provide their insights into the issues being discussed. Class presentation 30% All students should participate in the group presentation and analyze the readings assigned to the group. In each presentation, the group should identify and articulate 1) the core question, 2) the structure, 3) methodologies, 4) the disciplines and contexts involved, 5) the sources of the materials, 6) the conclusion of the article, and 7) your own comments. Every presenting group should be responsible for analyzing and answering the questions raised by fellow students. Presentations in English are encouraged. Take-home exam 40% You will be given an essay question to answer in three hours. You can write your answer at home or in the library, or anywhere that makes you feel comfortable. You can look up all the information you need, including online and printed materials. You can write your answer sheets in Chinese. All answer sheets should be submitted through Turnitin.
