Theorizing the processes as musical translations, I analyze how Chinese asserted their cultural values and political agendas in their understanding and adoption of Western musical theories and practices. These musical translations emerged from Shanghai, a modernizing city where Chinese had unprecedented contacts with Westerners due to colonialism. Details of the musical translations are examined in two chapters. They include: a discourse analysis of modern Chinese musical knowledge (Ch. 5), and a creativity analysis of translational levels that modern Chinese musical productions engaged (Ch. 6).
