The social and cultural centre in Palma will be putting on six exhibitions in la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes presents the CaixaForum Palma programme for this season la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes introduces the CaixaForum Palma programme for , which will be launched in October with the inauguration of the exhibition Un món flotant. Fotografies de Jacques Henri Lartigue (A floating world. Photographs by Jacques Henri Lartigue, ), the first major individual show of the work of one of the crucial names of 20th century photography. The next exhibition will be devoted to one of the directors who has shaped the modern cinema: Federico Fellini. It will reveal the mechanisms of the creation of the Fellini legend from photographs, drawings and films which have never been shown before. Meanwhile, NOMBR3S de bona família. La seva utilitat en la vida quotidiana (NUMB3RS from a good family. Their use in everyday life) will be the scientific event at CaixaForum Palma next year. The exhibition will analyse the process of the invention of numbers, the different typologies and their importance. la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes will also be organising two exhibitions with social themes. The first, Cambodja, terra d'esperança (Cambodia, land of hope), reflects the everyday life of the Cambodian people from images by the photographer Gervasio Sánchez. The second, Comerç Just. Un producte, una història (Fair Trade. A product, a story), recounts the process of preparing and commercialising the products, and reflects on responsible consumption and the producers quality of life. The programme will end with an exceptional exhibition of 16th and 17th century Italian drawings and engravings from the Rothschild 2
Collection. The selection belongs to the Louvre Museum and can be seen for the first time at CaixaForum Palma as part of the agreement between the two institutions to organise joint exhibitions. Palma, 28 September This morning the executive director of la Caixa in the Balearic Islands, Joan Ramon Fuertes; the director of the Fundació la Caixa Culture Department, Ignasi Miró; and the director of CaixaForum Palma, Margarita Pérez- Villegas, presented the CaixaForum Palma programme for the season. The new season at the la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes social and cultural centre in the city will be governed by one clear principle: the consolidation of its civic character as a meeting point for culture, science and the public. That will be reflected in a wide, global range of activities designed to interest everyone. CaixaForum Palma aims to be a platform in tune with current social concerns and to promote the value of culture as an element of social integration. Through the art and science exhibitions it will be scheduling, as well as the concerts, the literature and poetry seasons, the current affairs debates, the scientific and social seminars, the educational and family workshops and the activities designed for senior citizens, la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes fosters the knowledge and personal growth of citizens of all ages. With a view to the season, la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes has prepared a global, innovatory programme at CaixaForum Palma, for the purposes of communication, socialisation and, in short, the general well-being: a unique model of a cultural, civic and social centre which the entity has brought to the others with the CaixaForum brand in recent years. In 1993 the first CaixaForum opened in Palma, in the building designed by Lluís Domènech i Montaner. That was followed in 2002 by the opening of CaixaForum Barcelona, installed in the old Modernista Casaramona factory (the work of Josep Puig i Cadafalch) and, in 2008, by CaixaForum Madrid, in the Paseo del Prado. Since last year, the cities of Tarragona and Lleida have had their own CaixaForum, and they will be followed by Girona, Zaragoza and Seville. This year s programme at CaixaForum Palma places the emphasis on the artistic expressions most characteristic of the 20th and 21st centuries such as film or photography. In the field of photography, the exhibition Un món flotant. Fotografies de Jacques Henri Lartigue ( ) will show the photographer s skill at portraying the fragility of life and the lightness of time. This season s photographic programme will be rounded off by a selection of images by Gervasio Sánchez which show the everyday life of the people of Cambodia. It can be seen from June next year. 3
In the wake of the success of the Charles Chaplin exhibition, this season, from February 2011, CaixaForum Palma will be taking a fresh look at one of the directors who has shaped the modern cinema: Federico Fellini. In Federico Fellini. El circ de les il lusions (Federico Fellini. The circus of illusions), la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes will reveal the mechanisms of the creation of the Fellini legend from photographs, drawings and films never shown before. Thanks to this retrospective, visitors will be able to discover his obsessions and the images that inspired him to create one of the most singular and influential bodies of work of the last century. From June 2011, CaixaForum Palma will be mounting the exhibition Dibuixos italians de la Col lecció Rothschild, an exquisite selection of Italian drawings from the collection which Baron Edmond de Rothschild put together over his lifetime (he acquired over 7000 works) and which has been kept in the Louvre since The exhibition, which can only be seen at CaixaForum Palma, is the fruit of the agreement signed last year between la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes and the Louvre. It includes the loan of works and the joint organisation of exhibitions, curated by the experts at the Paris museum. Thanks to the agreement, five new projects will be produced in eight different exhibitions at the la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes social and cultural centres in Barcelona, Madrid, Palma, Girona and Lleida. NOMBR3S de bona família. La seva utilitat en la vida quotidiana is the scientific event that can be seen at CaixaForum Palma in the spring of The development of numbers has enabled us to count, to order, to situate, to compare, to distribute, to calculate, to encode and to have a language which is essential today both for everyday life and for the evolution of science and technology. This interactive exhibition will analyse the importance of the different kinds of numbers and their use in our daily life. Lastly, la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes will also be presenting the show Comerç Just. Un producte, una història. The exhibition is mounted in association with the FAIRTRADE trademark and its purpose is to give a didactic explanation, using documentaries, interactive audiovisuals and objects, of the process of preparing and commercialising the products which will lead spectators to think about responsible consumption and the producers quality of life. The exhibition sets out to show that behind the products we consume there is always a story, one which includes all the people involved in the process of preparing and commercialising them: producers, processors, hauliers, exporters, importers, and so on down to the consumers. 4
Year after year, the la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes Humanities Programme is a reference point on the intellectual scene in the country. From a repertory of cultural events it sets out to look more deeply into the foundations of our culture and provide keys for understanding the great social transformations of our times. Scientific disciplines of all kinds feature in the seasons of lectures and seminars. The CaixaForum Palma musical season will offer a wide range of events including prestigious names in ancient music and outstanding figures and groups of musicians from all over the world, with a great variety of styles and formats. 5
A FORETASTE OF THE EXHIBITIONS AT CAIXAFORUM PALMA SEASON 6
Un món flotant Fotografies de Jacques Henri Lartigue ( ) 2n From 20 October 2010 to 25 January 2011 Inauguration: 19 October Curators: Martine d Astier de la Vigerie, director of the Donation Jacques Henri Lartigue, Florian Rodari, art historian. Production and organisation: la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes and Donation Jacques Henri Lartigue (Paris) The first major individual exhibition in Spain of one of the leading names of 20th century photography, a master at portraying the joy of living and the fragility of existence Jacques Henri Lartigue (Courbevoie, Nice, 1986) is one of the great names of 20th century photography. Although painting was his first passion and he always regarded photography a secondary occupation, today his photographs are recognised as a portrait of a period which has now disappeared, that of the French middle classes of the last century. His images are contemporary with a period of upheaval and social change the First World War, the Russian Revolution, the Nazi occupation of France, etc. but Lartigue does not look at those conflicts. His work does not seek to be a representation of the political changes of an era, but becomes a unique document of a time and a way of life. Indeed, his photography always refers to the innocence, the spontaneity and the joy of living. Un món flotant. Fotografies de Jacques Henri Lartigue ( ) is the first major exhibition devoted to the French photographer in Spain. It brings together about 200 images belonging to the Donation Jacques Henri Lartigue in Paris, as well as objects such as cameras and original photographs of the time. With all this material, the spectator can discover Lartigue s work, whose salient feature is his desire to capture the fragility of life, the brevity of happiness and the lightness and speed of a changing world with his camera. 7
Comerç just. Un producte una història From 1 December 2010 to 27 February 2011 Inauguration: 30 November Production and organisation: la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes International Cooperation Programme CaixaForum Palma takes spectators on a journey around the preparation and commercialisation of fair trade products which invites them to think about responsible consumption The aim of the exhibition Comerç Just. Un producte, una història, organised in association with the FAIRTRADE trademark, is to give a didactic explanation, using documentaries, interactive audiovisuals and objects, of the process of preparing and commercialising the products. It is intended to lead to a reflection on responsible consumption and the producers quality of life. The exhibition sets out to show that behind the products we consume there is always a story, one which includes all the people involved in the process of preparing and commercialising them: producers, processors, hauliers, exporters, importers, and so on down to the consumers. The la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes International Cooperation Programme has been working since 1997 on a number of initiatives to foster economic and social development in countries in Latin America, Africa and Asia. A dozen of them are devoted exclusively to Fair Trade and particularly to cooperation with communities, cooperatives and local entities in the preparation and commercialisation of their products. The programme will also include activities designed to raise awareness of Fair Trade among the general public and the employees of the entity. 8
Federico Fellini. El circ de les il lusions From February to May 2011 Curator: Sam Stourdzé Production: Sam Stourdzé Production Organisation: la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes reveals the mechanisms of the creation of the Fellini legend from photographs, drawings and films never shown before Regarded as one of the creators of modern cinema, in his work the director Federico Fellini (Rimini, Rome, 1993) changes the rules of the narrative, deconstructs the story and rethinks film with total freedom. His body of work builds a particular, private and personal world of lyrical and poetic images which becomes a brave defence of the imagination as a valid category for knowledge and understanding. Federico Fellini. El circ de les il lusions brings together a diverse iconography, with about 300 pieces including photographs, drawings, magazines, comics, posters, interviews and extracts from films, many of them never seen before. The aim is not only to highlight the mechanisms of Fellini s creation but also to take a fresh look at his films. The exhibition places special emphasis on his obsessions, the images that inspired him, the ones that made him dream and the ones he constructed. It is laid out around four main areas: Fellini and popular culture; Fellini at work; the city of women; and Fellini or biographical invention. It lingers over aspects inherent to his world, such as the reconstitution of reality at Cinecittà, woman in all her polymorphism, the ambiguity of his religious feelings, psychoanalysis and dreams or his relation with the media. Federico Fellini. El circ de les il lusions thus responds to a twofold ambition: first, to make a new reading of his work and, second, to try out an innovatory way of exhibiting film, the broadest artistic form of the 20th century, the century of the image factory. 9
NOMBR3S de bona família La seva utilitat en la vida quotidiana From 30 March to 29 May 2011 Inauguration: 29 March Production: la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes presents an exhibition that analyses the process of the invention of numbers, the different typologies and their importance at CaixaForum Palma Numbers have been with humanity since the earliest times and are still an essential part of our progress. Over six thousand years different classes of numbers have emerged to solve ever more creative problems. Natural, whole, rational, real or complex, our life today is inconceivable without them. Before numbers appeared, human beings used ingenuity to count, and did so with stones, sticks, knots in string or simply with their fingers. From those numbering systems to the present day bar codes or the digits of the new electronic ID card, the development and perfecting of numbers has been a constant. The development of numbers has enabled us to count, to order, to situate, to compare, to distribute, to calculate, to encode and to have a language which is essential today both for everyday life and for the evolution of science and technology. CaixaForum Palma will be presenting the exhibition NOMBR3S de bona família. La seva utilitat en la vida quotidiana, an interactive show that analyses the importance of the different types of numbers and their use in our daily life. The exhibition takes us on a journey through the history of numbers, from the natural to the complex, and gives visitors a chance to get inside the skin of man before numbers, forced by need to invent them and then perfect them to meet other needs, such as counting the sheep in the flock in prehistory or, more recently, making the digital revolution possible. 10
Cambodja Terra d esperança From June to August 2011 Production and organisation: la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes International Cooperation Programme CaixaForum Palma reflects the everyday life of the people of Cambodia in an exhibition of the images of the photographer Gervasio Sánchez Organised by the la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes International Cooperation Programme, the exhibition Cambodja, terra d esperança at CaixaForum Palma recalls the efforts of the people of Cambodia to recover from a past scarred by wars. The exhibition considers three key factors for understanding this South-East Asian country and the way they have affected the people: antipersonnel mines, rice fields and the economic growth driven by the new generations. Through the photographs of Gervasio Sánchez (King of Spain Award for Journalism 2009) and the documentaries of Oriol Gispert, the aim is to contribute to a deeper knowledge of the reality lived by the peoples of South-East Asia. Since 1997, the la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes International Cooperation Programme has taken part in a drive to eradicate poverty through the promotion of and support for the sustainable socioeconomic development of the most vulnerable peoples of Africa, Asia and Latin America. Specifically, it has worked on a total of 371 projects in 57 countries with a contribution of over 43 million euros. Since 2000, the programme has been working on different projects in Cambodia designed for the rehabilitation of people injured by mines or suffering from polio, the elimination of mines from the country and socioeconomic development in rural areas. 11
Dibuixos italians de la Col lecció Rothschild From June to September 2011 Curators: Pascal Torres and Catherine Loisel, curators in the Graphic Arts Department of the Louvre Museum. Production and organisation: la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes and the Louvre Museum (Paris) A selection of 16th and 17th century Italian drawings and engravings from the Rothschild Collection belonging to the Louvre Museum can be seen at CaixaForum Palma CaixaForum Palma will be home to an exquisite selection of Italian drawings from the collection which Baron Edmond de Rothschild put together over his lifetime (he acquired over 7000 works) and which has been kept in the Louvre Museum since From the Renaissance, the use of drawing became fully established in the Italian art world. The drawings on show at CaixaForum Palma are by renowned Italian artists and span the period from late Mannerism to the Baroque, a faithful reflection of their practice in the 16th and 17th centuries. Among others there are portraits by Federico Barocci, Guido Reni or Salvatore Rosa, and pieces representing all the Italian schools of the time. The exhibition is the fruit of the agreement signed in Paris in September 2009 between la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes and the Louvre. It includes the loan of works and the joint organisation of exhibitions, curated by the experts at the Paris museum. Over the next two seasons there will be eight exhibitions at the la Caixa Social Outreach Programmes social and cultural centres in Barcelona, Madrid, Palma, Girona and Lleida. Another exhibition, entitled Prínceps etruscs. Entre Orient i Occident (Etruscan princes. Between East and West), was shown at CaixaForum Barcelona, CaixaForum Palma and CaixaForum Madrid in 2008, with many pieces loaned by the Louvre. 12
