3 NAME: Adam Michael Rose ORGANIZATION: Antibody Corporation Project Title: Against Being Project Beginning Period: June 2014 Project Completion: September 2015 Brief Desciption of the Project: Against Being places dance within the context of the philosophical debate between Being and Becoming. My project defines itself negatively, in terms of what dance is not: dance is not a language; dance is not a visual art form. I plan to research how the conceptualization of dance influences the act of dancing and conversely how dance evades conceptualization. 9 Adam Michael Rose Antibody Corporation Project Title: Against Being Project Beginning Period: June 2014 Project Completion: September 2015 Project Description: My intended project is to clarify my approach to dance by means of philosophy. My goal is not to make a dance to illustrate a philosophic concept; rather my intention is to work on dance and philosophy in parallel, without subordinating one to the other. Philosophy is not a theory but an activity, said Wittgenstein. This is how I view philosophy: as the practice of thinking, just as dance is the practice of moving. The way we think influences the way we move. A recent study published by Frontiers in Human Neuroscience confirms this. The study analyzed dancers brain signals as they thought about dancing and as they performed, and confirmed [the] study shows how crucial thought is to dance. I plan to research how the conceptualization of dance influences the act of dancing and conversely how dance evades conceptualization. For example, dance is often created to make a visual impact on an audience. Thinking of dance as a visual art form, a choreographer attempts to build choreography as a series of images or shapes. These shapes become poses, connected by basic movements such as walking, turning, jumping, etc. and the end result is a dance that looks like pose - pose - pose - jump - turn - pose - spin - pose - pose - pose - and turn. So even if a choreographer works from the standpoint of abstraction, and does not attempt to represent ideas or emotions, they still attempt to represent shapes, thus falling into the trap of trying to represent things by dance, even if these things are only shapes. Dance never fully represents images or ideas it merely suggests them, momentarily. Dance happens as an event that cannot be reduced to a choreographic image, text, or idea. Dance deals directly with motion, and we have a basic discomfort with motion and impermanence built into the structure of our language. With language, we try to find permanence in reality by assigning things fixed meanings. However, Everything is in motion and you can t step into the same river twice, to paraphrase Heraclitus. This is where dance steps directly into a very old philosophical debate. In Against Being I intend to place dance within the context of the philosophical debate between Being and Becoming. I have taken the side of Becoming, and have sketched out three phases of research relating to the Being/Becoming dichotomy (included in the provided timeline). I am casting a wide net in terms of research, while maintaining focus on the core idea of Motion/Becoming as opposed to Being. In relation to philosophy I am an autodidact, coming from an anti-authoritarian perspective. I plan to connect my research to that of feminist theory and the engendered implications of the Being/Becoming debate. The male-centric bias of western philosophy is notorious, and interrogating this gender bias is an essential component of my project. In developing the project in practical terms, I will pursue movement practices favoring muscle flexibility and improvisation. The idea of Against Being will develop as a movement practice in these terms: thinking of Adam Michael Rose - Lab Artist Final Application

11 the body as an event already in motion, this motion encounters obstacles in space/time. Like a billiard ball hitting against the walls of a pool table, the dancer strikes the trajectory of the body s motion at different points, to set off that motion in different directions. As a bridge between movement and philosophical research I will also undertake walking as a practice: walking as a basic body practice that creates favorable conditions for reflection and thinking. Only ideas won by walking have any value, said Nietzsche. I will undertake the project primarily as a solo investigation, bringing in other performers and collaborators as the process develops. I foresee the final production culminating in a series of actions including concert performances in a gallery or theater setting. Accompanying the final production, I plan to self-publish and distribute a finished selection of original writings. Project Timeline: RESEARCH June - October Thesis Becoming. As I look towards the next five years, I am shifting my focus away from familiar interests and defining myself against what I have already learned. At this time I m less concerned with the style and content of my artistic practice, and more concerned with its structural and operational levels. I am increasingly open-minded and interested in exchange with other artists and new approaches for this reason. Because of my experience oscillating between the fields of dance and performance art, I feel I have a unique perspective to share as well. I see dance, following its principle of motion, as an inherently trans-disciplinary form. Over the last two years I have presented my work outside of Chicago and have participated in performance festivals in New York, Virginia, and Philadelphia. I want to further connect with artistic communities internationally, to undertake research abroad and to contribute to exchanges between Chicago and international cities. I work within a community of artists in Chicago influenced by the innovative dance form known as Butoh. Involvement with and discourse around Butoh has rapidly evolved to the point where we can now define ourselves as post-butoh, and I participated in Chicago s first Post-Butoh Festival which happened at the Chicago Cultural Center in April, I believe the techniques and philosophies derived from Butoh can make valuable contributions to the field of dance. From this background, I hope to further the evolution of dance within Chicago. Artistic Profile: I make dance from the standpoint of a theoretical Antibody an amorphous body that evades conceptual, genre, and formal categories. Stylistically I align myself with the gothic and adolescent drag, combined with corporate mimicry. My inspirations include Butoh founder Tatsumi Hijikata, industrial music pioneers Laibach, and my midwestern background and context. I have a background in Dance and Music, which I studied at Ohio State University and Antioch College in Ohio. My performances incorporate both movement and originally composed music. I graduated with a BA in Dance from Antioch College in In 2009 I founded Antibody Dance, now known as Antibody Corporation. I am the Artistic Director of Antibody Corporation, and have created the majority of my choreographic and performance work under the aegis of the company. Antibody Corporation reached its five year anniversary in February of 2014, and this has also marked five years of dance making for me within the city of Chicago. I have completed artist residencies in Chicago at Links Hall (2009), High Concept Laboratories (2011), and DanceBridge at the Chicago Cultural Center (2012). In 2011, I was awarded a GreenHouse Artist grant by the Chicago Dancemakers Forum. With the support of the GreenHouse award I completed a video project, elena (or the misfortunes of the virtual), which screened at the Hyde Park Art Center, and a live performance, Holocene Overkill which was performed at High Concept Laboratories and Defibrillator Performance Art Gallery. I perform my work in both dance and performance art contexts, and have evolved through oscillating between these two modes of performance. In 2010 I performed the solo Auto Body at Defibrillator Adam Michael Rose - Lab Artist Final Application

16

17 Performance Art Gallery s inaugural event. In 2012, I presented performances in Brooklyn, NY, at Grace Exhibition Space and the Center for Performance Research. In 2013, I participated in two performance art festivals, the Supernova Performance Art Festival in Rosslyn, VA, and the Brooklyn International Performance Art Festival in Brooklyn, NY. In June of 2014, I will present a performance at the Rapid Pulse International Performance Art Festival in Chicago. In 2013, I received a Tanne Award for artistic achievement from the Tanne Foundation based in Boston, MA. The Tanne Foundation does not accept applications, and gives awards based solely on nominations. Receiving the Tanne Award in 2013 provided me with encouragement and support at a critical time in my artistic development. In 2013, I began to question many of my goals as an artist. This combined with a renewed interest in philosophy led me to many of the ideas I currently pursue. For several years I pursued dance and occultism as related interests, attempting to realize occult ideas through the act of performance. This culminated in 2012 and 2013 with The Nyx Project, an extended exploration of the mythology of Nyx, the ancient Greek Goddess of Night. I performed several works, including Nemesis, Eris, and Moros, which were attempts to embody these descendants of Nyx. Unlike the Olympian deities (like Zeus for example), there are very few stories about these deities. In attempting to portray these deities without narratives, I encountered the abstractness of dance in a new way. In attempting to portray ideas as abstract as Retribution, Strife, or Doom, I began to question whether dance can even portray concepts at all. Through researching Greek mythology, I began to encounter Greek philosophy. This research has informed my current proposal. I have pursued a self-education in philosophy over several years, generally starting with contemporary theorists and working my way backwards historically: beginning with Jean Baudrillard, Theodor Adorno, Georges Bataille, then Nietzsche, and finally Sextus Empiricus and Heraclitus. In 2013 I walked from Chicago to Milwaukee as a performance. I called this long-walk-as-a-performance the Walk to Milwaukee. In the end I covered approximately 115 miles on foot in 4 and a half days. I documented the walk by taking photos with disposable cameras. I have an interest in walking as a basic mind/body practice, and as a means towards seeing reality more clearly through direct experience. My theoretical goals for the next five years include: 1) To embody the gap between Art and Economics; 2) To articulate the abyss separating Body from Concept; 3) To perform the work of the Negative; 4) To move against Time; 5) To undertake Research & Development in relation to Antihumanism. Finally, I believe that all art-making and theoretical work should be undertaken with an awareness of its basic absurdity.
