2 Ayn Rand Born: February 2, 1905 City: St. Petersburg, Russia Ayn Rand was a Russian-American novelist known The Fountainhead, Atlas Shrugged, and the novella Anthem. Rand studied history and philosophy at the University of Petrograd before leaving Russia for the United States in 1926 ( Biography of Ayn Rand ). (Rand.)

4 What s going on in Russia? Before Rand left Russia for the United States, communism settled over Russia ( Biography of Ayn Rand ). According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, communism is a political theory from Karl Marx that advocates a society in which all property is publicly owned and each person works and is paid according to their abilities and needs. 5 What s going on in Russia? Rand opposed communism. She believed in the rights of the individual and despised collectivist Russia. She took America as her notion of an ideal society ( Biography of Ayn Rand ). Rand s hatred of collectivism in Russia inspired her novella Anthem. According to the New Oxford American Dictionary, collectivism is the practice or principle of giving a group priority over each individual in it.

6 Anthem Rand wrote Anthem in 1937 after moving to the U.S. ( Biography of Ayn Rand ). Anthem is a novella, meaning it is shorter and less complex than an novel, but longer and more complicated than a short story. (Anthem.)
