2 Pride and Prejudice The Fountainhead ADVANCED PLACEMENT LITERATURE AND COMPOSITION SUMMER READING ASSIGNMENT THE SUMMER ASSIGNMENT IS DUE THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL THERE WILL BE A 20 POINT DEDUCTION PER DAY FOR LATE WORK. Part I: Pride and Prejudice 1. Critically read Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. During the first week of class, you will take an objective test on the novel. 2. Write a thoughtful 2-3 paragraph response to the question below. This is formal writing. Be sure to document your citations and include a works cited page following the format established by the Modern Language Association (MLA). (See hand out on MLA documentation) Use a formal and scholarly tone in your essay. PRIDE AND PREJUDICE 2-3 paragraph response: Charlotte Brontë did not appreciate Pride and Prejudice. She felt that Jane Austen didn't write about her characters' hearts. Do you think Brontë's criticism is accurate? Is Austen's treatment of her characters' feelings superficial? Do they feel and/or express deep emotion? Bronte further asserted I should hardly like to live with her ladies and gentlemen, in their elegant but confined houses. How is confinement explored in Pride and Prejudice? REMINDER: You must quote from the novel and provide citations for all quotes. You must use proper MLA format. You must include a work cited page.

3 Part II: The Fountainhead 1. Critically read The Fountainhead by Ayn Rand. 2. Choose ONE of the topics below and write an original, well-organized essay. 1. How do Keating s and Roark s paths to success differ? Which one in the end is the real success? In your essay, consider what Ayn Rand has to say in these excerpts from her writings. 2. Choose the scene in The Fountainhead that is most meaningful to you. Analyze that scene in terms of the wider themes in the book. 3. The theme of The Fountainhead, said Ayn Rand, is individualism versus collectivism, not in politics, but in man s soul. How do the motives and actions of Roark, Keating and Toohey dramatize this theme? In your essay, consider what Ayn Rand has to say in these excerpts from her writings. In a 3 page typed essay, respond to the prompt you have chosen in its entirety. Cite evidence from the novel to support your ideas. You must quote from the novel using proper MLA format. You must have a work cited page.
