Multimedia is any computer application that integrates text, graphics, animation, video, audio or other methods of communication. Multimedia is different from television, books or cassettes because it lets you interact with the application. You can click on a word to make a picture appear, or click on a picture to start a video. Multimedia became more popular after the mid-990s when the price of hardware began to fall. Then people started using it in industry, business, education, entertainment and for other purposes. Today, we can find multimedia at home, in school, at work, in public places, such as libraries, and on the Internet. In business, advertisers use virtual reality in multimedia applications to advertise their products in three dimensions (-D). Using multimedia for graphs and tables is now the best way for managers to present company results. In industry, pilots learn to fly using multimedia simulations of real situations, and scientists simulate experiments with dangerous chemicals in safety. Publishers are also producing interactive magazines, called e-zines, and e-books online. In education, students study interactive CD-ROMs at their own speed and explore topics creatively by clicking on related links. Teenagers have played computer games for years, but many multimedia applications combine education and entertainment and they let them visit virtual words or change the ending of films. A HONEYMOON TO FORGET When John and Paula Beaumont-Willard got married and promised to love each other, they had no idea how bad their skiing honeymoon was going to be First, the taxi to airport didn t turn up and they had to ask a friend to take them; fortunately they got there just in time. They got on the plane, then discovered the pilot was sick, and they had to wait two hours for another one. They finally set off and arrived in Toulouse several hours later. They got on the bus to take them to their hotel, but it broke down, still in the airport. When they were waiting for another bus, there was a fire alarm and the airport was evacuated. After a two-hour delay, they left Toulouse Airport again. This time, when the bus was leaving the car park, a taxi drove into the back of it another delay. By the time they finally got to the hotel, they were tired and fed up, but at least they had arrived. Their holiday was beginning. Then on the third day, John fell over and broke his shoulder and couldn t ski for the rest of the week. Paula tried to enjoy herself, but it wasn t much fun and they wanted to come home. But the morning before they left, they got a phone call from the neighbour who was looking after John s car. The previous night, the neighbour noticed that someone had smashed the car window, so he went to check their flat as well. The door was open. Thieves had taken everything, including all their wedding presents. We ve had a terrible time, Paula said, back in England, but we have no regrets about getting married. Task Eight things went wrong on the holiday. A British couple, Emma Nunn and her boyfriend Raoul Sebastian were on their way to a three-week holiday in Australia. It s surprising that they didn t realize something was wrong when they landed at Halifax Nova Scotia in Canada, and were transferred to a -seater plane for the last part of their journey. But 9-year-old Miss Nunn was only slightly worried. I don t like flying and I said I was surprised to see a small plane like that going all the way to Sydney Australia, she said. On the plane, they gave us immigration forms asking how long we planned to stay in Canada. I told the stewardess we would only be there a couple of hours, and she said, Fine, write two hours. The couple were not concerned when they realized that their flight time from Britain was just nine hours 0 minutes instead of hours. So it was not until they landed at Sydney on Cape Breton Island, Nova Scotia a town with a population of 6,000 that they finally realized that they probably wouldn t be able to use their Australian dollars at the local bar. While their friends were waiting for them at Australia s Sydney airport, the couple who had booked their Air Canada tickets on the Internet landed on the opposite side of the world. They were met at the airport by Andrea Batten, a costumer service agent for the regional airline, Air Canada Jazz. I was told, Can somebody go to the front desk, there is a couple who think they should be in Sydney, Australia, she said. While baggage occasionally ends up at the wrong hemisphere, she added. Back home, the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) said the story was a great advertisement for using travel agents. A spokesman said: That is probably one of the drawbacks of the Internet there is not a brain in the middle.

Craig Thomson was sent to prison for seven years for attempting to burgle the home of 86-year-old Edith Robinson (not their real names). After Craig was sentenced, Mrs Robinson asked the prison if she could contact Craig. The prison agreed, and Craig wrote the first letter. The exchange of letters was later published in a national newspaper. a) Dear Mrs Robinson, I hope you are very well. Firstly, I d like to say that I m very sorry for what I did to you. I ve never in my life done anything like that or hurt anyone, and I hope you ll forgive me. I got mixed up with the wrong sort of people and ended up taking drugs. I don t really know b) Dear Mrs Robinson, Sorry I haven t written for a while but I ve been doing some exams, so I ve been studying all the time. As you can see I ve now been moved to another prison. I couldn t have put up with the other place much longer, and it s a lot better here. I m now out of my cell a lot more and I can walk around outside where we have some nice flowers. I m going to see if I can get a job in the gardens so that I can c) Dear Craig, Such a nice letter. I was planning to write to you this week even if I hadn t received your letter. I d like you to confide in me and regard me as a friend, not a victim. I have great faith in you and feel there s a lot of good in you. I was so pleased to hear that your education is going well. Do try hard it s your only hope for a decent life when you are released. Choose your friends with care. I m so afraid of you being influenced by the wrong sort of people. Your sentence was harsh but it may be that it was meant to save your life. If you d continued on drugs, you could have died. Remember d) Dear Craig, It was lovely to hear from you, and I m so pleased you re in better surroundings. I do hope you ll be able to work in the garden it s hard work but very rewarding. If you could get some proper training, this might be a good career for you Take care, Craig. I want to live long enough to see you make a success of your life. I m going for some exams as I want to be in a better position when I get out. I ve made quite a few friends but they re not the sort of friends I want when I m back out there. I d like to say thank you for being so understanding. You re a really nice person and I wish I d never done what I did. I m glad that you ve forgiven me. I just cannot forgive myself. f) Dear Craig, Thank you for your very nice letter. I know it wasn t an easy letter for you to write, and I do appreciate the effort you made. Of course I forgive you. I ve done many things in my 86 years which I m ashamed of, and it isn t for ne to judge you.
