Of Mice and Men Unit Test Review For each character listed below, find one example of direct characterization and indirect characterization, and explain what it shows about each character. George Quote What does it reveal? The first man was small and quick, dark of face, with restless eyes and sharp, strong features. Every part of him was defined: small, strong hands, slender arms, a thin and bony nose. This shows the reader that George is small in size, but strong and intelligent. He is someone who is aware of his surroundings and can read a situation well. "No," said George. "No, Lennie. I ain't mad. I never been mad, an' I ain't now. That's a thing I want ya to know." This shows us that George truly cares for Lennie, and that their relationship mattered more than anything to him. Lennie Quote What does it reveal? Curley s Wife Quote What does it reveal? Crooks Quote What does it reveal?
Find at least 5 examples of foreshadowing. For each example, explain what later even in the story it foreshadowed, and which of the three effects of foreshadowing it is an example of. Example What does it foreshadow? Effect? Lennie- if you jus' happen to get in trouble like you always done before, I want you to come right here an' hide in the brush." This foreshadows the events of the end of the novel. Lennie will get into trouble (killing C.W.), and comes and hides in the brush and waits for George. Makes later events seem credible
For each chapter, identify the mood, and how the events of the chapter are reflective of the mood. Be sure to identify evidence that represents the mood of each chapter. Chapter Mood/Evidence Events in chapter reflective of mood 1 The mood is calm/peaceful. 2 The water is warm too, for it has slipped twinkling over the yellow sands in the sunlight before reaching the narrow pool. In this chapter, Lennie and George are by themselves. None of the tension that comes later in the novel is apparent in this short scene, and they appear almost part of the natural scene. Its just the two of them, talking about their dream, taking care of each other, and hanging out
Identify two examples of each type of conflict below. How do each conflict impact the story? (the impact may affect the mood, help define a character, move the plot forward, be an example of foreshadowing, or illustrate irony). Man vs Man: Carlson vs Candy Ever' time he comes into the bunk house I can smell him for two, three days. Why'n't you get Candy to shoot his old dog and give him one of the pups to raise up? Example of Foreshadowing, Man vs self: Man vs society: External Conflict: Internal Conflict:
Find 4 symbols in the story, and explain what it represents. Symbol Quote What it represents Candy s Dog. Why'n't you get Candy to shoot his old dog and give him one of the pups to raise up? Candy s dog is a symbol of one of the weak on the ranch. This also shows that the weak are easily replaceable in the world of the ranch
For each of the following themes, find evidence it the story that helps illustrate that theme. Evidence from the story that illustrates it He went to his bunk, pulled his bag from underneath it and took out a Luger pistol. "Le's get it over with," he said. "We can't sleep with him stinkin' around in here." He put the pistol in his hip pocket. Power of the strong over the weak This shows this theme because Carlson (the strong) forces his opinion over both Candy and his dog (the weak). Carlson doesn t care at all about Candy s feelings or Candy s relationship with his dog; instead, he only thinks about how the dog smells and bothers him. Unlikelihood of the American Dream Evidence from the story that illustrates it Negative effects of Isolation and Loneliness Evidence from the story that illustrates it
