3 LESSON 13 Understanding Point of View CCSS RL.7.6: Analyze how an author develops and contrasts the points of view of different characters or narrators in a text. 1 Introduction THEME: Living in the World In literature, who tells a story and how a story is told have a great impact on the tone, mood, and meaning of the story. The narrator of a story and the characters in the story see a situation from different perspectives, or points of view, which readers must take into consideration when analyzing the story s meaning. A first-person point of view is when the narrator is a character in the story. Since it is told from the narrator s perspective, the point of view might be subjective, that is, influenced by the narrator s personal opinions or feelings. In a third-person point of view, the narrator is usually not one of the characters in the story. The narrator tells you how the characters feel through the narrator s outside perspective. An objective point of view is when the narrator is a detached observer. The narrator tells what happens without stating how the characters think or feel. An objective point of view is not influenced by the narrator s personal opinions or feelings. An omniscient point of view is when the narrator knows everything about all of the characters. A limited-omniscient point of view is when the narrator s knowledge is limited to only one character. 5 2 Focused Instruction Read the first part of the excerpt of the novel. Then answer the questions. from Robinson Crusoe by Daniel Defoe Chapter III: Wrecked on a Desert Island 1 I was now landed and safe on shore, and began to look up and thank God that my life was saved, in a case wherein there was some minutes before scarce any room to hope. I believe it is impossible to express, to the life, what the ecstasies and transports of the soul are, when it is so saved, as I may say, out of the very grave: and I do not wonder now at the custom, when a malefactor, who has the halter about his neck, is tied up, and just going to be turned off, and has a reprieve brought to him I say, I do not wonder that they bring a surgeon with it, to let him blood that very moment they tell him of it, that the surprise may not drive the animal spirits from the heart and overwhelm him. 2 For sudden joys, like griefs, confound at first. 3 I walked about on the shore lifting up my hands, and my whole being, as I may say, wrapped up in a contemplation of my deliverance; making a thousand gestures and motions, which I cannot describe; reflecting upon all my comrades that were drowned, and that there should not be one soul saved but myself; for, as for them, I never saw them afterwards, or any sign of them, except three of their hats, one cap, and two shoes that were not fellows. 4 I cast my eye to the stranded vessel, when, the breach and froth of the sea being so big, I could hardly see it, it lay so far of; and considered, How was it possible I could get on shore? Think About It From what point of view is the story told? The question asks you to determine what kind of narrator is telling the story. What is the story about? Who is telling the story? 6 2 Focused Instruction Continue reading the story. Then answer the question. A CLOSER LOOK Underline the details in paragraph 5 that state or suggest how the narrator feels. 5 After I had solaced my mind with the comfortable part of my condition, I began to look round me, to see what kind of place I was in, and what was next to be done; and I soon found my comforts abate, and that, in a word, I had a dreadful deliverance; for I was wet, had no clothes to shift me, nor anything either to eat or drink to comfort me; neither did I see any prospect before me but that of perishing with hunger or being devoured by wild beasts; and that which was particularly afflicting to me was, that I had no weapon, either to hunt and kill any creature for my sustenance, or to defend myself against any other creature that might desire to kill me for theirs. In a word, I had nothing about me but a knife, a tobacco-pipe, and a little tobacco in a box. This threw me into such terrible agonies of mind, that for a while I ran about like a madman. Night coming upon me, I began with a heavy heart to consider what would be my lot if there were any ravenous beasts in that country, as at night they always come abroad for their prey. 6 All the remedy that offered to my thoughts at that time was to get up into a thick bushy tree like a fir, which grew near me, and where I resolved to sit all night, and consider the next day what death I should die, for as yet I saw no prospect of life. I walked to see if I could find any fresh water to drink, which I did, to my great joy; and having drank, and put a little tobacco into my mouth to prevent hunger, I went to the tree, and getting up into it, endeavoured to place myself so that if I should sleep I might not fall. And having cut me a short stick, for my defense, I took up my lodging; and fell fast asleep. The narrator has mixed emotions due to the situation he finds himself in. 7 3 Guided Practice Read the journal entries. Then answer the questions. Staying with Aunt Gina A CLOSER LOOK Circle the words and phrases that reveal how the narrator feels about Aunt Gina. July 6 I arrived at Aunt Gina s at about 10:30 last night. I was exhausted from the long train ride. I sat next to a nice man named Amir who was on his way to see his family after working overseas for many months. He showed me pictures of them and recounted memories that made him wistful and even teary eyed. I knew how he was feeling, although my situation was the reverse. As the train continued, the distance between me and my family was growing, while the distance between him and his family was getting smaller. Although I had met Aunt Gina before, I was only 6. That was seven years ago, a distant memory. Now I was leaving the friends and family I loved so dearly. I hope I will like it here. July 10 The past few days have been very difficult. Aunt Gina is quite strict; she makes me go to bed extremely early. Lights out! she yells. I feel like I m in summer camp again, but without all the fun and games and friends. The house is in such a remote location, we see very few people on a daily basis. Ridiculous as it may sound, I have come to look forward to the mail carrier s visit, short as it is, just to hear a new voice, and of course in hopes there is a letter for me. July 13 Aunt Gina s house is gigantic. Upstairs, there are five bedrooms, as well as a library, a sunroom, and two bathrooms. Downstairs, there is a living room, a parlor, a huge kitchen, and two more bathrooms. There is also a basement, which is quite dark and scary, and an attic, which is less scary somehow, but still quite dark. 140 UNIT 3 Craft and Structure in Literary Text

8 3 Guided Practice Lately, when I m finished with my chores, I ve been exploring all the nooks and crannies of the house. Some of the rooms have funny smells, a mixture of old perfumes or soaps and dust, which tickles my nose. Most of the rooms in the house are unused; the curtains stay drawn, so I have to use my flashlight to look around. Some of the walls are adorned with beautiful old photographs, which upon sight, occupy most of my time. I could sit there for hours wondering about their lives and I have: who they were, where they lived, if they are friends or relatives of Aunt Gina. I love to look at them because they also help fill the time here. I m not used to being alone so much, and I don t like all the quiet. July 15 Aunt Gina s house sits on a massive hill. From my bedroom window I can see many, many miles ahead. I have come to really enjoy this view. While reading, I often find my eyes drift from the pages of my book to the landscape outside my window. Today was particularly enchanting. There was a fog that hovered above the ground, moving ever so slowly across the horizon. The sky was completely white, filled with clouds that, from time to time, produced a very gentle, slight rain. For some reason, the gloomy weather comforted me. The trees and the hills and the animals I would see from time to time were all becoming my friends, for lack of any real contact with people my age. Today, despite the fog and mist, I felt as though I could see the landscape more clearly. Or, rather, that I knew the landscape better now than when I arrived, and had come to appreciate its beauty.
