SAATCHI GALLERY GESAMTKUNSTWERK New Art From Germany Student Activity Pack Name. Year.

Imagine Imagine that the Saatchi Gallery has been transformed into an enchanted forest... This weird and wonderful German forest is named GESAMTKUNSTWERK. If you follow the trail in this booklet you will discover strange creatures and magical objects. There are even photographs, paintings and collages of some scenes in the forest. It s bound to be a mysterious, beautiful, gruesome and exciting journey, so sharpen your pencil and tie your shoelaces in preparation to become an intrepid explorer. Make sure you record what you see and use the games and activities in this booklet to help you unravel the secrets of the magical forest.

Use this map of the gallery to follow the trail in this booklet.

Since you will be looking at new art from Germany let s have a look at where Germany is in the world. See if you can guess which country is Germany on the map. EUROPE Now see if you can fill in the gaps to guess the other countries that surround Germany FR_A E P AN_ B_LGI_M

Gallery 1 Markus Selg In this part of our enchanted forest you can see a collection of objects, sculptures and paintings. The artist who made all of these pieces is called MARKUS SELG. Markus Selg wanted to hide away in the mountains so that he could create art that was inspired by his life in the wild. Can you find these carved sculptures? Perhaps these are some of the people that Markus Selg found in the mountains while he was living there. Anima Eva Abgrund This figure s name is ANIMA. Try writing a short story about Anima or one of her friends EVA or ABGRUND. Imagine and describe what their lives would be like. See if you can find the furniture that Markus Selg made for himself when he was living in the forest. Markus gave the furniture names, can you find them? Use the space below to write your answers.

If you were living alone in the wild what materials would you use to build your own home? Think of all the different things you can find in nature that would be helpful. Would you give your items names too? List your items and their purposes here. Now draw a picture of one or more of the objects in your home made from things you found in the forest.

Gallery 2 André Butzer Now you have made your way into another area of the forest where all the crazy bodiless creatures live! The artist ANDRÉ BUTZER scribbled all these faces to create mad, chaotic and colourful paintings. Look at all their wacky faces! They look like cartoon characters or doodles. The artist, André Butzer, was inspired by lots of other artworks. One in particular is this painting. This is by EDWARD MUNCH. It was painted over 100 years ago in It is called THE SCREAM. Can you find the faces in the paintings in Gallery 2 that match this one? How many you can count? Now see if you can help the frightening faces find one another in this maze.

Feeling Inspired? Imagine that you came across this frightening face in the forest and now draw your own screaming face below.

Gallery 7 Jeppe Hein In this part of the forest everything is not as it seems, you will find some magical objects that have had a spell cast on them. These objects were created by the artist JEPPE HEIN. He wanted to give the viewers of his work a shock or a surprise. In a way you have now become part of the total work of art because you ve had an effect on the sculpture. What happens when you walk up to the mirror? Circle the words that most fit how you feel when you got close to the objects. You can also add more if you want. Surprise Nervous Confusion Sadness Excited Anxious Overwhelmed Empty

Gallery 8 Thomas Zipp You have now reached the head quarters of the enchanted forest! Here is where all the scientific experiment and research happens! The artist who made all the pieces in this room is called THOMAS ZIPP. Can you spot the portraits of the evil professors? These evil professors want to start a war with all the other creatures in the forest that you have met so far. What do you imagine is in the big black balloons? Imagine What...

The scientists are confused by all of their mysterious work. They have drawn lots of diagrams and maps but cannot make any progress ( which is lucky for all the other creatures in the enchanted forest! ) Look at this puzzle they have made, see if you can make a better one by linking the artists names with their art works. (You may have to look back in the activity book to the work you have already looked at for clues!) EDVARD MUNCH JEPPE HEIN MARKUS SELG ANDRE BUTZER

Gallery 10 Andro Wekua Enter into Gallery 10 and it seems as if we are looking out on to the horizon beyond the enchanted forest. This piece is called SUNSET and is by the artist ANDRO WEKUA. Look closely, can you see the grid like pattern? What do you think the artist has painted this work on? What? It looks like a back drop to a theatre or perhaps even the scene from a dream. If you look behind the work you will see that it is held up by scaffolding which may make you think it is even more like a backdrop. What are the three main colours that you can identify in this gigantic artwork? These are called the PRIMARY COLOURS. The artist Andro Wekua uses these colours to create a bold and striking piece. Andro Wekua has painted layers of dark tones across these three primary colours. This gives it a gloomy or threatening mood.

Colour the pieces below in using three different colours in each piece and see how the MOOD of the piece changes.

Gallery 14 Friedrich Kunath This is one of three pieces by the artist FRIEDRICH KUNATH. This piece wasn t given a name by the artist. It looks like a clown, don t you think? This is the clown of the forest. Give him a name. Does he look very happy to you? The clown is crying. One big inky black tear drops from his eye. The clown is sad because he loves the enchanted forest but he is stuck right up the top of the tallest tree in the forest. What has he got coming out his other eye? Clue: it is very small but long His ladder is too small though to help him down from the top of the highest tree in the forest. What can you see resting on his big top hat? This is one of the clown s only friends. This little bird has come to sing to the clown to keep him company because he is the only creature that has wings that will take him to the top of the highest tree in the forest where our clown is stuck.

The Clown is sad because he misses his friends and longs to see all the beautiful and whacky landscapes of the forest. You have now been through lots of the enchanted forest. What was your favourite part of the exhibition and why? Did you know, that until 1989 Germany used to be two halves? After the second world war a wall was built to divide the country into East and West Germany. This was called the BERLIN WALL. When the wall was taken down families became reunited after years of being kept apart and there was a huge celebration and live music. The Berlin Wall over the years became adorned with street art of the time expressing the MOOD of some of the people living in the harsh conditions in East Germany
