12/12/16 Homework 12/12/16 Per. 1 12/12 Notes 1

12/13/16 Understanding a claim versus a counter claim. Write down your answer to the following question in your literature section in your notebook: Based on Romeo and Juliet's reactions to each other, is love at first sight possible? Also, please take out your HW for a quick check. Per. 1 12/12 Notes 2

Claim: an author's idea Pull Romeo and Juliet identify themselves as individuals, not as members of their family. Pull Fate plays a role in Romeo and Juliet s lives. Counterclaim: the opposite of the author's idea Pull and Juliet s love PullRomeo can be considered beautiful. Per. 1 12/12 Notes 3

Groups Central Idea 1 A Nicole Chris Danielle S. Mike Priya B. Jessica Nahdiyah Josh Jarod Central Idea 3 A. Angelina Shuaib Alana Mateusz B. Erin Danielle L. Vicky Leya Central Idea 2 A. Daisy Isabella Yousef David B. Sharon Sarah Joe Kaamil Katelyn Please send one person from each group to get chart paper. Fill out your chart, focusing only on your assigned claim. Look for three pieces of textual evidence that supports your claim. Part II Select your best piece of evidence that supports your claim and write it down on your chart paper. Explain why the evidence supports the claim. Per. 1 12/12 Notes 4

In closing...answer the following in your notebook: Why is it important to comprehend both sides of an argument? Why would this make your claim stronger? Homework: Select one of the central ideas that was presented in class. Write a claim that you can defend, using two "strong" pieces of textual evidence. Answer in 4 5 sentences. 12/14/16 Continuation of claim versus counter claim. Examine remaining groups arguments. Whole class discussion using textual evidence to defend statements using the previous day's chart paper and postits to add "stronger" evidence. Per. 1 12/12 Notes 5

12/15/16 Compare and contrast the mood in Act III scene 1 as portrayed by the two different versions. Overriding questions: How can a scene with the same text be portrayed differently? What was the mood in each movie? Did it change? At what point did it change? Writing Skills 1. Underline the title of a play when writing a response by hand. If you are typing it, italicize the title. 2. TEXTUAL EVIDENCE...TEXTUAL EVIDENCE...TEXTUAL EVIDENCE...got it? 3. Only capitalize proper nouns and the first letter of a sentence! Let's look at two samples... Per. 1 12/12 Notes 6

The central idea of love versus hate is present throughout act 1 and 2. This is developed by the Rivalry of the Capulets and Montagues. This develops the central idea since the rivalry causes forbidden love of the 2 main character Romeo and Juliet since their last names. The central idea is developed also by the love Rome and Juliet since without it there would be no story of the forbidden love. One Central idea in scene one in Romeo and Juliet is love and how "love at first sight" is very true for both of them. When Romeo sees Juliet for the very first time, he immediately starts talking about her beauty and his immediate love for her. He says, "O, she doth teach the torches to burn bright!" This shows how he thinks Juliet is a very attractive person. He also says, "Did my heart love till now?" This shows he's doubting his love he previously had for other women, like Rosaline, and no he is truly in love with Juliet "at first sight. Per. 1 12/12 Notes 7

12/16/16 Today's writing sample: Romeo and Juliet's love can be considered beautiful. False The 'love" that they have for each other can't be beautiful because it isn't even considered love. They just met at a party that wasn't even meant for Romeo to be there. In act I Scene 5, Romeo says "Did my heart love till not? forswear it, sight! For I ne'er saw true beauty till this night." Really? Didn't say that about Rosaline. Act III sc. 1 movie/mood/tone comparison continued. Examine language of scene in the Shakespeare ience books. HW: Read Juliet's soliloquy, Act III, sc. ii and annotate. Please use the link on my website for the full text and complete reading the whole scene (Act III, sc ii) to see what happens in the following conversation with the nurse. Per. 1 12/12 Notes 8
