1 Name: Spelling Homework Each week we learn a new spelling pattern. We learn in school and we learn at home. We learn the first five words we don t know. To learn I use: * Look, say, cover, sound out, write, check to find and highlight the first five words I don t know. * Finger spelling to blend the words I need to learn. I can say this out loud to an adult to show them I can finger spell. * Repetition. I write the word I don t know5 times. I say the sounds as I write the word 5 times. Finally, I cover the word and write it without seeing the word. I check the word is spelt correctly. I repeat this task until the word is spelt correctly. A few more tips for helpers at home: * Help your child by asking them to sound out the words using the letter sounds. * Use the words in the spelling list as a measure of your child s vocabulary. Discuss the meaning of words and use them in discussion with your child. * Common words that a child is not yet able to spell will be added to the list over the year. If you are helping your child learn these words you should use letter names when writing or hearing these words. * If you need more words use the following web search ai (the sound of the week) followed by more words frequency. [You would type ai more words frequency in the search engine.] It should give you a list of words from arranged in order of frequency. 1
