Harper Lee section 4 Her family is related to the Confederate general Robert E. Lee. She was born in Monroeville, Alabama on April 28, She attended the University of Alabama before completing her law degree; she considered her law courses as good training for a writer. (Law demands both writing and logical thinking) She expanded a short story into To Kill A Mockingbird, and it was published in she won the Pulitzer Prize for fiction.

Harper Lee section 4 Atticus Finch is modeled after Lee s own lawyer father (Amasa dad s name; Finich is mom s maiden name) Lee is the narrator Scout Finch Dill is Truman Capote her childhood friend Maycomb is modeled after her hometown of Monroeville

Scottsboro Trial brief overview (section 4) 1931 Nine African-American youths are charged with the rapes of two white women in Scottsboro, Alabama; eight of nine were convicted and sentenced to death 1932 U.S. Supreme Court reverses convictions of the seven Scottsburo defendants on grounds that their constitutional rights were violated 1933 Second Alabama trail of the Scottsburo Boys; defendants again convicted 1935 U.S. Supreme Court reverses Scottsburo convictions 1937 Four Scottsburo defendants freed others sentenced to long prison terms By The last of the Scottsburo defendants were freed on parole

Picture Discussion sec4on This picture is similar to a small Southern town like Maycomb in the novel. How can you tell this picture is from the 1930 s and not another era? In the town pictured, as in Maycomb, many people knew each other by name. Small towns are oren thought of as friendly, relaxed places. Why do you think such towns are thought of this way? Do you think they really are this way? Why or why not? How does this small town differ from Lansing? Explain. Would you like to live in a town like this? Why or why not? Explain.

Picture Discussion sec4on Most towns are divided into neighborhoods that differ from one another in many ways. But in the South in the 1930 s, towns were split in two in a drama@c way; they were segregated by race. How do you think this type of racial segrega@on affected the town s environment, community spirit, and atmosphere? Who would live in the part of town pictured on the ler? Why? Who would live in the part of town pictured on the right? Why?

Picture Discussion sec4on Where is this picture taken? Why do you think so? Refer to evidence from the picture to support your idea. During the years of Jim Crow segrega@on in the South, this loca@on was one of the most important organiza@ons in the lives of blacks. Why do you think this was true? Explain.
