3 School Sonnet I d like to hear your ideas shared in class, Is something I hear very frequently. Because though I often choose to speak last, I could answer the question correctly. Why does everyone have to be so loud? Why don t they know that we don t have to know That they know? Though it s okay to be proud, Being quiet doesn t mean that you re slow. I don t need to be told that I am right, I ll let somebody else have the credit. And when I m asked to read I ll be polite, But you can be sure that I will dread it. The View from the Top Kat Keeling Senior During the summer between my junior and senior years, I went on a short hike to a scout camp in New Mexico called Philmont.

5 The View from the Top Kat Keeling Senior During the summer between my junior and senior years, I went on a short hike to a scout camp in New Mexico called Philmont. It was a leisurely one hundred-mile hike over the course of twelve days and roughly 5,000 feet in elevation. We carried a hefty fifty pound pack and hiked about nine miles a day, but it was fun. Toward the end of our hike, we came to the object of our journey: Mount Baldy. The gradient of this particular mountain was no picnic either, with an average of 30 degrees for the first half and 45 degrees for the second. This all added up to a difficult hike, indeed. The going had not been particularly rough up to the halfway point just because we were having fun, but the next bit was quite punishing. Once the incline became steep, the ground under our feet was not the only obstacle to our climb. At roughly 12,000 feet, the oxygen in the air had decreased to a noticeably lower level, and the effects showed. I was having more problems than anyone, having had asthma as a child, and I was slowing down the group. By the time we were two hundred feet away from the peak, I was breathing heavily and I barely dragged myself up to the peak before dropping my pack and collapsing. But when I stood up, I saw that the view was more incredible than anything I had ever experienced in my life. Gary Turner Senior

8 Square One I wish I remembered first stepping onto the new, clean tiles of my house. Of course, I was three at the time, so not remembering is not exactly my fault. What I do remember is running all around that house, chasing my brother and sister, shrieking with glee as we slipped and slid all over those slick tiles, waiting for Daddy to come home and hearing his shoes on those white square tiles. I remember eating dinner on the floor one night with my sister as Mommy came home, her heels clacking on the white squares. I remember the wholly different squares of the hospital that day I needed an x-ray after falling down too hard on those squares and how different those squares were from the ones in the other room where I met my little sister. I remember how the squares in the schoolroom became more like blocks than familiar squares. I would only step on the green blocks because no, white blocks are squares and white squares are tiles like at home and school is not home, it is sitting still and straight and not running all around. I remember how the colors danced off the white squares at Christmas and how we danced to the man singing and how the presents sounded as they slid over the cracks in the squares. I remember how I wished the squares would push me up a bit when we measured ourselves against the wall. I remember scampering over those squares to get upstairs on the weekends when I heard my parents walking with a purpose because purpose means they are going somewhere and more often than not it is to do chores and if they do not see me they will not tell me to come with them to do chores. I remember growing up and using those squares as a way out because they lead all the way to the front door and out the front door is the car and the car is everywhere. I will remember the hollow sound the squares make when I am home alone and I will suddenly feel three again and want to be chasing my brother and sister all around the house again but no I have graduation in the morning and after that no more of those white squares that you counted down the New Year on, no more of the squares where you heard you were going to college, no more squares that told you your uncle was gone and never coming back, no more squares hugging you when you come home and caring about you and loving you. Only new squares, blank squares, empty squares that mean nothing to me and at the same time have the potential to mean everything. I will remember the last time I step on that first square, that last square one. I will be able to go back to it, but not to my first square one. That first square one is beyond my reach, beyond my memory, beyond myself. And that is okay, because the squares are still there and so is that house and the memories I do have. I do not need that first square one; I just need the squares. Sarah Laird Senior

10 The Sun, Moon, and Stars Once upon a time, there was a mother who had daughters who were triplets. The first born daughter had tan skin like a Native American, fire-orange curly hair, hazel eyes, and she was born with a smile. The second born daughter had pale white skin, black hair as dark as the night, grey eyes, and she was born quiet with no tears or screams like an average newborn child. She had dark freckles along the path of her nose and over her small, sensitive cheeks. The third child had frost white hair, bright blue eyes, was born with a beautiful smile, and her skin was also as white as her sister s. The mother, with tear-filled eyes, cried as she looked over her daughters. The nurse asked what their names would be. 12 The Comeback I was there for the biggest crash and the most memorable comeback ever. At the Daytona International Speedway, February 2015, at the end of the Xfinity race, my heart felt like it stopped beating as I watched Kyle Busch trying to get around Chase Elliot when he wrecked. I watched Kyle and his colorful M&M car slide through the infield grass and into the wall. I saw that he could not get out of the car, which is really bad. The fire crew got him out and took him to the medical center. I knew that it would turn out badly but I did not know how bad it was. The next day I looked at my phone on my NASCAR app; I saw that Kyle broke his left foot and had a compound fracture in his right leg. I did not think he would be racing the 2015 season. But it turned out he did, and he won the championship in November that year. It was his first championship and the greatest comeback ever. By Laura Mordaunt Sophomore
