1 Assembly 19 July 2013 Paula Schefermann Kingsmead College 5 girls sitting in classroom and 1 teacher Teacher: Right now girls what Habit of mind do you think we would use when we think about this question? 1: I m so tired of hearing about these Habits! 2: I just don t get it, why do we need to know all of this?? 3. I know they are important but REALLY, when am I actually going to use them? 4. Well lets think about it 5. Yes, what do you want to be when you grow up? 1. A doctor! 2. A painter! 3. A Nurse! 4. An astronaut!! 5. Well all of those could use the habits! How??? 4+5 Lets see how! Thinking and communicating with clarity and precision and Gathering data through all senses (In a car: Mom, dad, 2 kids) Mom: We are lost I knew it Dad: No we aren t, we are taking a shortcut Kids: Oh no Mom: Just listen to me, I m looking at the map book and I can see we are not even going in the right direction Dad: of course we are, I know this area like that back of my hand Kids: yeah right Dad: When I was a child we used to drive through this part of the countryside every weekend Kids: Countryside?? Dad: well it used to be the country side Mom: Look at the GPS, it says MAKE A U- TURN Dad: ignore it, I m sure I m right Kids: Mom, try Google maps Mom: Ok (typing into ipad) Well the map book, the GPS AND google maps tell us to take a left. The road looks unsafe Dad: Just trust me Mom: LOOK OUT THERES A HOLE IN THE ROAD Dad: where?? EVERYONE: AAAAHHHHH!!!
2 (hits a pothole and crashes the car: everyone falls out) 4: You see I don t think Mom and Dad were thinking and communicating well 5. even with mom gathering all the necessary data needed! 4: They both should have been watching the road! 4+5: Adults (shaking their heads) Tow- truck arrives (3 drivers) Finding Humour and Thinking flexibly (3 tow trucks race each other to the scene..rush to be there first) Driver1: Yoh Yoh Yoh what do we have here? Driver2: Yus, this is a Train smash! Driver3: No you banana, it s a car crash! Driver 2: I know Driver 1: Hey Knock knock Driver 2 +3: Whose there? Driver 1: cargo Driver 2 +3: cargo who? Driver 1: cargo Ka- boom! (makes cashing noises) Driver 2 +3: (blank stare) Driver 1 : Lighten up, its only a joke Driver 3: Hold on, hold on I ve got what one. What happened when then red car crashed into the blue car? Driver 1 +2: What? Driver 3: It was marooned! Get.. blue, red?? Maroon ed? Driver 1+2: (blank stares) Driver 3: Tough crowd. Driver 1: Now how are we going to get this car from out of that ditch? Driver 2: our cable is not long enough? (everyone looking down) Driver 3: Hmmm.. I know why don t we disconnect our cables and join them together that way we can reach it. Driver 1 +2: (Nod and agree) Ahhh, you so clever! Driver 2: But who gets paid? Driver 1: we split it 3 ways Driver 3: AAAH NO! It was my idea 50, 25, 25. (Left fighting whilst the paramedics arrive) 1: Okay, I see now they were able to find humour whilst working in some not funny circumstances 2: And thinking flexibly when to get the car out of the ditch! 3: And that one guy was thinking flexibly when doing that maths! (All laugh)
3 Paramedics arrive (8 4speaking 4 partners) Striving for accuracy and Listening with understanding and empathy Paramedic 1: Oh my goodness this is a mess! Paramedic 2: (To dad) Where does it hurt Dad: My leg! My Leg! Owww Paramedic 2: Ok sir, I can see you are in a lot pain, just hold my hand and tell me how this all happened (talks quietly to dad) Paramedic 3: (to mom) Mam, mam, can you hear me? Mom: my head, its all a daze..where am I? Paramedic 3: you were in a car crash, stay calm, tell me what you are feeling. Paramedic 1: (to child) Oh my goodness that arm looks painful, stay calm and tell me if there is anything you need. Paramedic 4: (to other child) This little girl says she is struggling to breathe please bring me some oxygen! (Carry on the scene with getting everyone into the ambulance) IN THE AMUBLANCE Paramedic 5: Where is the nearest hospital Paramedic 6: (on radio) where would you like us to dispatch the patients? Paramedic 5: We need to act fast, which is the quickest route. Paramedic 6: Drive down William Nicol, when you get to the third robot take a left at the 4 th stop sign turn right, when you are at the hospital make sure you keep left and then right, right? Paramedic 5: I think so! (Drive out) 4: They were organized people, they really took time to hear what these people were saying 5: And those directions were so accurate, maybe HE should drive with dad next time! (both giggle) In Hospital emergency room (5) Posing questions and problems and Managing impulsivity Nurse1: Right what do we have here? Nurse2: A broken leg Nurse3: A concussion Nurse4: A green stick fracture Nurse5: A deep cut on the thigh Nurse1: And what are you going to do about it? Nurse2: This will have to be set and I think surgery will be needed Nurse3: I will take the patient to the ward where we will keep her conscious until we see there is no other damage Nurse4: We will need to take X- rays to confirm the fracture Nurse5: Stitches
4 (All try to rush off in different directions) Nurse1: WAIT! Hold on! We have only one doctor available, Who is the most serious (inspects) Right Broken leg you will see the Dr first, Green stick fracture, off to X- rays, concussion you may wait here and cut thigh the Dr will attended to your stiches in a while. Keep calm, you will all be fine. 1: Good thing that Nurse was so calm! 2. She really knew her stuff! 3. By being so calm and managing her impulsivity she could get each nurse to really think about the problems at hand and come up with a great solution! X- ray Room (4) Applying past knowledge and Metacognition Looking at the X- Rays Dr1: I don t know, it looks quiet severe Dr2: I m telling you it s a green stick fracture Dr3: I ve seen this kind of fracture before and it was more severe then expected Dr4: What make you think it s not a Green Stick? Dr3: The way the fracture lies, how the bone seems to have shifted? Dr1: Not a past injury maybe? Dr3: Maybe, hmm good thinking! Dr2: I think we must have this set, I ll book surgery now. Surgery (4) Taking responsible risks and Thinking interdependently Dr1: Pass me the scalpel Dr2: What are you trying now? Dr1: Its something new, I saw it at a conference. Dr3: Wow! That looks interesting, have you tried it before? Dr1: No not yet, but its simple and it reduces the scaring by up to 50% Dr4: I m impressed, but why not turn you wrist that way, and see if that helps? Dr1: Wow! That makes it so much easier thanks! 4: I can see how these doctors worked together and used what they learnt in medical school! 5: Don t forgot that conference! 1: By working together they helped improve what they already knew!
5 Back in the ward Remaining open to continuous learning and Persisting Mom: Well that will teach you! Dad: Me!? It will teach all of us! Child1: Yes dad never take your eyes off the road Child2: And check the route before we leave! Mom: And don t argue with your wife! Dad: these crutches, they are hard to walk with Mom: Keep trying dear, you ll come right! Child1: And my arm how I am going to write my tests? Mom: with time it will feel fine, just keep at it! 2: I m sure dad wont ever forget that he should of listened to mom! 3: And if he does, she will remind him (both laugh) 2: But both dad and daughter will have to persist with their broken bones, it wont be an easy road ahead! At school Wonderment and awe and Creating imaging and innovating Show and Tell Child1:This (pause) is my broken arm. They said its special because it s a fracture on top of a fracture (Everyone is class goes WOW) Child2: We were driving down the road when a HUGE bear jumped out of nowhere and started to attack our car, then I got out and with my bare hands tackled it to the ground, it bit my leg and that s when I passed out. I had to get 36 stitches!! Child: Very creative but that s not what happened! Teacher: So you see class, these Habits can sometimes become boring and I know you are not always sure when you are going to use them, but by thinking about it we could see that we are ALREADY using them everyday, its HOW well we use them that makes the difference!
6 Poem Persistence, Accuracy, Questions and Problems too, Managing impulsivity is what you gotta do, Applying past knowledge and Responding with wonderment and awe, are the keys to opening the habits of mind door. You ve got to Think flexibly and Take responsible risks, Remain open to continuous learning, now you ve got the gist. Gather all the data, Create and Innovate, Think interdependently That s what we rate! Communicate clearly And listen with empathy, Think about your thinking for sure, And when you can, laugh until you hit the floor! All fall down The end.
