5 Paper, Ink and Think Politics the word in itself is enough for somebody to comprehend what they are going to read, isn t it? Scams, corruption, money, etc come rushing into our mind, like oh! That politician was involved in that scam and that one in the other. That is how we remember our politicians today. If today we need to decide which politician is better than the other we go by the ideology lesser the scams; better the man. ONE IN A MILLION (where we inspire...) TRIPLE FILTER TEST In ancient Greece, Socrates was reputed to hold knowledge in the highest esteem. One day an acquaintance met the great philosopher and said Socrates, do you know what I just heard about your friends? Hold on a minute Socrates continued. Before telling me anything I would like you to pass a little test. It is called the Triple Filter Test. That s right Socrates continued. Before you talk to me about my friend it might be a good idea to take a moment and filter what you are going to say. The first filter is Truth. Have you made absolutely sure that what you are going to tell me is absolutely true? No the man said I actually just heard about it and All right said Socrates. So you don t really know if it is true or not. Now let us try the second filter, the filter of Goodness. What you are planning to tell me about my friend is it something good? Sometimes we wonder why we even elect a government when it has nothing to do with the country and its people, it s more concentrated on holding their position strong. Every day when we see the front page of a newspaper what we see is conflicts within the government. A political party is hypothetically a group of people coming together with a common view point and goal. Let s see if that really is true. All parties want control over different parts the government system which leads to conflicts and constitutional breakdowns. There is one thing blatant about the government system in India, the members of a party do not share a common view point and that they join parties which offer them opportunities to hold power. Today an honest politician is like a diamond in the rough isn t it? No, on the contrary So Socrates continued you want to tell me something bad about him but you are not certain whether it is true. You may still pass the test though because there s one filter left: the filter of Usefulness. What you want to tell me about my friend is going to be useful to me? No, not really Well concluded Socrates if what you want to tell me about him which may neither be true, nor good, nor even useful then why tell me at all? In a nutshell Let us not just get carried away by the situation or talk. When any situation or such talks take place, let us give it this very simple Triple Filter Test. If we have the habit of minding other people s business our own business will become bankrupt
6 HOWZZAT!!! INDIA AT LONDON 2012 The great cricketing nation of India has finally renowned itself in the world of individual sports. With a splendid performance at London 2012 games has brought a glimmering hope to the entire nation. These Olympics being the most successful one in the Indian sporting history ha brought dignified glory to us. With a huge team of 81 athletes with a equal ration in genderwise participation India produced a total of 6 medals. Vijay Kumar and Gagan Narang shot the bull s eye and their reward was a silver and a bronze. 5 time world champion Mary Kom got us the first ever women boxing medal at the Olympics in the bronze colour. Yogeshwar Dutt and Sushi Kumar, star grapplers won the bronze and silver respectively in their individual weight categories. And finally the ace shuttler, Saina Nehwal brought home the first Olympic medal in badminton in the form of a bronze medal in a sport immensely dominated by the Chinese. Indian winners at 2012 Olympics. The wins do matter a lot yet the stunning performance by other athletes in various other sports have silenced the critics who were doubting the caliber before the games began. This brings in the long awaited silver lining to the field of individual sports in India. At the budding stages, we can expect a great deal of success in Rio 2016 for which the wait is on, the hope is high, the talent is abundant and what the rest of the world has to say Oh yeah the Indians have arrived!!!
7 NUMBER ONE TEACHER I am happy that you re my teacher, I enjoy each lesson you teach. As my role model you inspire me, To dream and to work and to reach. With your kindness you get my attention, Every day you are planting a seed Of curiosity and motivation To know and to grow and succeed. You help me fulfil my potential I am thankful for all that you have done I admire you each day, and i just want to say As a teacher, you are number one. Contributed by - Shrinidhi. C. H (IIC) WHAT A FRIEND REALLY IS... A friend is: Text sender, Secret sharer, Chit chatter, Always eager, Day bloomer, All knower, Light stager, Good comforter, Gift giver, Leaves you never Mind reader Feeling writer Pain reliever Laughter sharer Mall goer Eat together Good doer Friend forever. - Drishti Dwivedi(XI A) Should I Try To Fit In Or Not? Yeah! I tried the rebel way Fell in the moat Tried to swim and stay afloat Why do castles have to be impervious to most? Maybe I ll wear a tailcoat Sip tea and talk of hunting sport And hopefully hide the fact that I know nothing about the court Better still, I ll build my own Difference is there will be no moat Just a cozy sign that says Welcome one and all, Hang up your coat and let's talk. Maybe you didn't guess But the castle is mere euphemism for a time closer to home (Yeah, the one we're lucky enough to live in) The one where seven billion people living are lonely Pass by an inch and yet don't know me Where try as I might, I could never know everybody Where strive as I might, not everybody will like me Where something will always be empty And someone will always be missing So this one question I ask of you Should I try to fit in or let it be? Sympathy I lay in sorrow, in deep distress; My grief aproud man heard; His looks were cold, he gave me gold, But not a kindly word. My sorrow passed I paid him back The gold he gave to me; Then stood erect and spoke my thanks And blessed his charity. I lay in want, and grief and pain; A poor man passed my way. He bound my head, he gave me bread, He watched me night and day. -Aashima Singla (XII D) How shall I pay him back again, For all he did to me? Oh, Gold is great but greater far Is heavenly Sympathy. 8 SHARE WITH CLAIRE Dear Claire, I am a student of 10 th standard. This year I ll be giving my board exams and I am very nervous about it. My parents have high expectations from me and I m scared that I won t live up to their expectations. No matter how hard I try, I can t concentrate on my studies. Help! Stressed student Dear stressed student, Guess what?! You are one of the MANY students who are going through the same problem. What you need to realise is being scared or nervous wont make things easier. Your parents have expectations because they know you can do it. So instead of worrying about it, try and concentrate on your studies. The more you worry, the more you will lose your concentration. Stop feeling anxious and first have faith in yourself. After all, its not the end of the world. Its not even the beginning! leisure X M O Q T W O F I C E R B N L U J V O X T L P E I G H T P M W R O K D N B I H C N U M W H O E U M U Y O E S L F N C L P X Q F R T E R S E I E T I N D H V U T G V S V R S F R L O P I M E F E K B E E F N V I J S T N D E W W L E F O S N G E L T FIND NUMBERS FROM 1 12 IN THIS PUZZLE ( in words).
