6 Sigmund Freud Neurologist interested in the root causes of mental illness. Developed the concept of the unconscious which demonstrated that human beings might NOT entirely be in control of their mental and physical processes. Developed psychoanalysis as a method for treating people with physical symptoms, yet no physical or biological cause.

9 Sigmund Freud Conducts a number of case studies which allow him to develop his theory on dreams and the role of the unconscious. According to Freud, wishes are repressed by the conscious mind & manifest themselves in dreams, jokes, compulsions & obsessions.

11 What is Surrealism? International movement (or philosophy) aimed at creating art that confronts the unconscious desires driving nations into what many people believe are acts of mass psychosis. Goal of a surrealist work is to represent the unconscious, and for many Surrealists, the world of dreams is where the unconscious resides causing their works to take on a non-mimetic style.

Pure Psychic Automatism automatism was dictated by thought, in the absence of any control exercised by reason, exempt from any aesthetic or moral concern.
